Poison Springs Road is a 4-wheel drive trail that travels through Poison Springs Canyon, crosses the Dirty Devil River, and into the Glen Canyon NRA. The trail, after 45-miles, enters the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park, where it intersects with the Flint Trail. The Flint trail then climbs up the steep Flint Trail Switchbacks, and after another 22-miles arrives at the Hans Flat Ranger Station. From the Ranger Station there is still another 46-miles of dirt before rejoining Utah Highway 95. This completes a great 2-day adventure into the remote and beautiful desert of southern Utah.

That was great, Terry, the first video I've seen of that Poison Spring route ( I'm sure there's more out there now). That has got to be the most remote, beautiful, unknown, "road less traveled", in the lower 48 states. I studied it with a passion when google earth first came out but videos like this are the only way I will get to see it. Much respect to the boys that cut those tracks out, of course that's not to be compared to the effort expended on the east half of the Hole In The Rock expedition, but it is amazing following those almost endless tracks through that magical lonesome land. Thanks for your effort and for posting.

Thanks, appreciate the comment. I have driven and filmed the drive to the "Hole in the Rock"; camping was great but, Hole in the Rock Road is not fun - 56-miles, of washboard hell. But, seeing what the Mormons accomplished in the 1880's is remarkable. Even more remarkable when you realize they were doing it for their religion and not just looking for uranium $.

One of my favorite trips in Utah. Check out the road conditions with the Hans Flat Ranger Station (435-719-2218) and the BLM in Hanksville (435-542-3461) a couple of times, in the fall especially, the road has been impassable.

The Flint switch backs looked really tight on those two turns. Do you think I could make the turn with a small tent trailer behind my Wrangler?

Yes I think you could, but I would call the Hans Flat Ranger Station (435-719-2218), I am sure they have experience with trailers on the Flint Trail switchbacks. They can also tell you the condition of Poison Spring Road from the Dirty Devil River to the Flint Trail. Also, call the Hanksville BLM office for the flow at the Dirty Devil river crossing, (435-542-3461). Have fun.

Where is the trail head?

The Poison Springs Trail starts 17 miles south of Hanksville on Hy 95. The Hanksville BLM office can give you a map and directions plus info on the Dirty Devil River flow. If the flow is above 50-60 CFS fording might be an adventure, so check with the BLM Rangers.
