Pokémon Fan Games are Going to be Banned 

Companies usually don't strike until money is involved but relic castle's always been safe on that, so it's scary they got taken out. If this leads down a road fangames are going to be essentially banned and not worth trying to make (also WE DON'T KNOW WHO DID IT don't get near me lawyers, just my thoughts)

Funny how the Pokemon company will spend more time censoring and going after the fanbase instead of actually improving their own games

Fun Fact: The person who made undertale (Toby Fox) started out making earthbound rom hacks, and is now composing music for pokemon, starting in sword in shield with the battle tower theme, and a ton of music in scarlet and violet, including the area zero theme and the AI professor theme

The problem with fan games is how they highlight shortcomings on gamefreaks part. In particular finished fan games have - Plenty of ingame content - Plenty of post game content - Access to the whole Pokedex. - Unlimited Pokemon storage (store in PKHEX boxes drag and drop) This makes Gamefreak and TPC look bad in comparison because they - Cut postgame and sell it back to you as DLC - Dexit, and they'll hold the cut ones hostage in Pokemon Home - Cutting corners and providing bare minimum when it comes to ingame content So yeah of course they don't want us having better pokemon experiences than they can provide 😂😂😂

Tbh the Pokemon company should learn from the creator of the fnaf game and create a part of their company where, fans can make and publish their own Pokemon games under Nintendo, where the Pokemon company would like own a part of the game you make , and this way the Pokemon company could legit cultivate amazing game developers and hire them to make the best official Pokemon games

Toyataro, the writer and artist of the Dragon Ball Super manga and official succesor of Toriyama was found because of his work on Dragon Ball AF. A fan manga meant to continue the post GT storyline before Super. Had fan works like AF been banned. There wouldn't be a person to continue Dragon Ball Super and hold Toriyama's legacy. Especially now with his recent death. Pokemon is shooting themselves on the foot because with works like Insurgence, Uranium, etc. They could find their own Toyotaro. A fan passionate and talented to bring new ideas to the series. Instead they are just discouraging fans from wanting to engage in Pokemon.

The copyright system has gotten out of control. I think any Pokémon game up to the GBA games should be public domain at this point. It has been around twenty years since they were released. That’s basically an entire generation of people going from birth to adulthood. Copyright should be capped at twenty years. Now, as a business practice, TPC is being stupid here. These fan games keep the community alive, likely resulting in more Pokémon *merchandise* sales which we know are the real purpose of the games and anime. TPC should be happy to have people create free advertising for their merchandise brand. This is a stupid business decision.

Honestly I think it’s stupid to crack down on fan games simply because it makes Pokémon more relevant and fosters more interest in Pokémon leading to more sales on the offical games essentially it’s like free advertising.

I'm heavily involved in a fangame called Vinemon: Sauce Edition. I've met numerous wonderful people throughout my six years of following the project, and it turned out to be a masterpiece of both passion and quality. It's still getting updates, it has a functional online, and I had the absolute honor of designing five 'Mons for the roster. To see all of the hard work the devs have poured into this game potentially jeopardized is beyond harrowing. ALL of us here probably have a history of designing our own Pokemon Regions and Fakemon, and that usually leads to us creating our own original settings in the future. To swipe that launching pad from these passionate people is heartless.

Funny you brought up Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball AF was a fan manga made by Toyble back when GT ended and we had a drought of anime/manga content. His art was so reminiscent of Toriyama’s style that it caught the eye of Toriyama himself. Years later - Toyble (now Toyotaro) is the illustrator and writer alongside Toriyama (prior to his death) of Dragon Ball Super’s manga.

When Nintendo Cracked down on Pointcrow Modding Zelda BOTW for fun and literally playing it more than any other person it really showed Nintendo's true colors. There is no reason to not allow someone to mod their offline singleplayer game. Nintendo is afraid of people making better games and content for their games than they ever could.

Stupid move on Nintendo's part, half of what Pokémon players and youtubers play when bored of normal Pokémon games or after playing them too much are Pokémon fan games for a refreshing outlook on it. Doing this could potentially ruin quite a bit of the Pokémon fanbase, therefore losing profit for Nintendo and we know that's all they care about.

I wouldn't say every fangame is in danger. The Pokémon Company has always had a history of striking down random stuff so I would say there's a non-zero chance that they hired a new third party for DMCAs and they weren't told exactly what to strike and not strike.

I think it’s a false strike or they struck them for a reason we can’t see. The poke community was always bigger, so this move makes no sense. It also was not done directly by pokemon company, which is not their mo. Plus their own prior lawyer just said they don’t care about fan games. So something fishy is going on here.

I would get it if these fan games profited off the company’s games. However, I don’t understand banning the creators fan games if they’re just that. If they’re not profiting from these games, why ban them? The fans is what made them grow. It just low key feels like getting in trouble for drawing fan art. Copyright, ownership, blah, blah, blah aside; if fans are not profiting, let them have fun. Many creators fan games would inspire me to add something new or make something better using their ideas for a future game. Heck, some of their ideas NEED to be seen by the company. ….this move just feels a bit weird. Are they running out of ideas so rapidly that they deflect any type of new idea fans may have in order to beat them at their (made it first) race? That’s just goofy!

I just started working on my own fangame with essentials. Have a lot of maps already done. A lot of characters. The story is planned. It took me by surprise to see that the side is gone. I even started to upload my tilesets there and people were happy about them. It's so sad that this happened ;-;

Pokemon Reborn is literally my favourite Pokemon game. Fangames is what keeps comunity alive. Pokemon Company is straight up dumb for doing it.

This is just so sad... Nintendo and Pokemon should encourage fangames and let aside that weird hermetic mentality. I know it comes from Nintendo´s origins and the high quality image they always had but it's gotten stale. They should engage with fangames to get new ideas and search for talent.

Yuzu is honestly a bit of a different story, it was taken down since the developers were charging money for certain services and the were helping people who paid access things like Zelda TOTK early, essentially being piracy which they got paid for. TPCi is doing something nefarious by not allowing pokemon fans to make fan games... it limits creativity and essentially stop us creating things for the franchise we love. with them cracking down on rom hacks and fan games lord knows what else they'll crack down on next

Fan games reignited my love for pokemon. Some of the fan games Ive played or seen surpass a lot of what gamefreak is putting out right now. Why play a buggy and relatively easy game with hardly any story that will cost me 60 bucks or more when I can download a far more stable, creative and fun game for free? And i agree with the sentiment that the fan game makers are using their games as practice. The creator of pokemon empyrean made his own game anode heart and the creator of pokemon xenoverse is making their own game called lumentale. Fangames tend to be very niche but they are still apart of the community.

making pokemon rom hacks is exactly how i got into game development. it gave me this passion and unlocked a talent i didn’t know i had. i do feel like the creators of certain fan made pokemon games should get a job offered to them if it means taking down their game.

So much like the Disney Wars that have defined copyright laws around the US. BUT, Pokemon fan games will persist no matter what. Fan games innovate the series, and like you said they “inspire a new generation of developers.” How do you learn to make games cheaply without DIY?

That is a very sad bit of news. I had the idea for 2 fan games and I started plotting in and collecting the tools like pokemon essentials 😢

The weird thing about this is that TPCI doesn’t mind rom hacking or fangames under the circumstances that the hack doesn’t come prepackaged with the patch that turns it into the rom hack. Nintendo are really the only ones who are against hacking and fangames, meaning that this was likely a decision made by them. Alternatively, the DMCA could have been because of the name of the site, Relic Castle. Relic Castle is a location from the Unova games, and is, as such, TPCI intellectual property. If the rumors about gen 5 remakes come true, I feel it would make sense for TPCI to want any and all names related to Unova to redirect to a site about these games, and Relic Castle would work for that.

This is really sad for me, I was working on a fangame (I didn't even start in RPG maker yet) and I may not even get the chance to publish it

They're cracking down on Mods now cause someone made a Pokrmon Mod for Palworld and put the mod behind a paywall. So that one person caused the downfall of fangames and mods.

If I were them, I would allow fangames but say that you HAD to include "unofficial" under the game's logo/title screen and a disclaimer at the very beginning of the game. It's just free publicity, and if someone didn't follow those rules, THEN you should take them down. They're not doing it out of malice...they're doing it because they love the thing you made and want to show and share that with others. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

I'm assuming gamefreak feels with their recent blunders taking them down is the best financial business play it's ruthless but fangames are super well known to tons of people. It's easy to find and make them so it sorta makes sense for them to do so now. As unfortunate as it is to happen it's well within their legal right to do so. I'm not defending their decision I'm just clarifying potential reasons for the takedowns. I really wish nintendo or gamefreak can hire these people similar to what they did for that 3ds metroid 2 return of samus. So these devs lives aren't ruined but would instead work for the company they adore.

The Pokémon company is just mad that fans are better at making games than they are. The only remaining question is if this will result in a Streisand Effect for Pokémon called a Relic Castle Effect.

Ive always thought that a lot of fan game makers of any game who really add a good spin to things can really make amazing things on their own thats not a fangame. Its also funny that you can trace a lot of the activity on shutting down mods and stuff because that one guy had a certain one on during a tournament lol.

After the relic castle news I don’t think I can buy official Pokemon games anymore and maybe official products unsure on that one but my love for Pokemon is still there and always will be but it just feels like I am just a whipped dog hoping things will get better for Pokemon but just don’t and “fun” Pokemon projects like the detective pikachu movie or adventures manga are exceptions meant to milk me and the people behind Pokemon don’t care about the company I mean I get the company is there to make money but the Pokemon company have to care about the fans beyond living wallets somewhat right????

Nintendo has always been like this - killing fangames (pokemon), mods (acnh), and fanartists (etsy). it's been this way for decades and it was only a matter of time before everything gets taken out. if you don't want your works taken down, then don't use Nintendo IP.

Going after fan games that make no profit is, for me, beyond dumb. These people are literally giving Pokemon free publicity in a way. It was thanks to rom hacks and emulators that I got back into Pokemon around the time of Black and White after not having touched Pokemon since Ruby and Sapphire. No matter how much I still love Pokemon, I can't deny how much TPCi and Nintendo are asses when it comes to their property. This isn't just a Pokemon thing, Nintendo are notorious for going after fan projects. I can kind of see where they may be coming from in a way. If I am getting my Pokemon "fix" through emulators and fan games, then I may feel less inclined to spend the not insignificant money on the game itself, the console it plays on, and the subscription to access online services. But at the same time, I am also locking myself out of playing the "real game" and online play. Funny you should mention Undertale in this video. Can you imagine if Toby Foxx was as stuck-up as Nintendo and other entities are, there wouldn't be an Undertale Yellow, for example. I don't know, man. I can see their point of view, but as a consumer I can't really abide by it. It just makes me feel icky and stinks of "we can't afford to let anyone to do a better job than the owners of the biggest fantasy franchise on the planet for free, so we must shut them all down".

I started work on a fangame less than two weeks ago to try and hone my game design and writing skills without worrying about building mechanics from the ground up... Ten days ago I downloaded the whole Pokemon Essentials + Deluxe Battle Kit suite from reliccastle. And now reliccastle is gone

But didn't the Mystery Dungeon games start off as fan games? I have so many fond memories of Infinite Fusion, Insurgence, Reborn, Uranium, Phoenix Rising, Xenoverse, Daybreak, Unbound, Dark Rising, Light Platinum, Ethereal Gates, (I also tried a little bit of Emerald Kaizo and Radical Red. Those are stressful), Zeta/Omicron, Solar Light/Lunar Dark, Sweet, Moemon, Gaia, etc. I've played so many fangames and my favorite by far are Uranium, Insurgence, Reborn, Infinite Fusion, and Xenoverse. Now I loved all of the games, but those ones just stuck with me in a different way.

That's concerning, to say the least, but we do have a work-around. Like other/new sites, file sharing by people who have those game downloaded, etc. Complete wipe-out is not possible imho.

You know what's crappy about this, besides Toby fox we have Scott Coffin aka creator of fnaf and man created a support network for funding fangames. LITERALLY SMALL GAME DEVELOPERS ARE INCURRING THEIR FANS TO MAKE THEIR OWN CONTENT BASED ON THE GAMES THEY MADE. Yet Nintendo wants to get ride of entire non profit games off the face of the world just for simply existing.

I personally think Nintendo did this cuz the nintendo switch 2 was announced. so they don't want ppl to be able to play any games on emulators and not the switch 2. I mean think about it man. Look at any other emulator (besides citra since its related to yuzu) look at how many emulators existed from like 2011-2024 why didn't nintendo sue any of those?

If this is TPC's doing, then they are doing everything in their power to kill off Pokemon. TPC and by extension Nintendo is the literally the only company I can think of that is THIS hostile to its own fanbase and customers. And somehow people jump at the chance to defend them and pour out their wallets. It's insanity. If fans stop keeping Pokemon relevant, the brand will die.

I think beside pokemon, the second monster-tame base game is Shin Megami Tensei. Which is kind off the father of all monster taming games from today. And the thing is that the SMT (not persona, the main SMT) series is the most mature monster-taming game out there that is made from a company (because there are some out there made by indies)

I got into pokemon when i was young and found a way to play emerald on my phone and loved it since, then found the anime and went to buy the official games and later plushies. Around sword and shield was when i got into rom hacks and enjoyed the qol and difficulty they propose. To see that potentially go for people who do love pokemon and wait for the next game to release as they play these rom hacks is quite disheartening. However discord and reddit is still a thing and we can work around it if nintendo is striking down but if its done by people not related to nintendo and dmca'd for assets used without permission, then there may be no worry.

I feel like I were to do a fan game at this point game it will be a parody based on this alone it will have big letters saying NON-PROFIT when you start the intro but when you start it it’s non even complete because of Nintendo or gamefreak or Pokémon company or whoever is doing this (for this scenario going to this Pokémon universe saying this is copyrighted) and so it ends. (Or I’ll make a long story based around it)

It just doesn’t make sense. Why wouldn’t Pokemon hire these groups? We get better games and Pokemon would make millionssssss! It’s all they care about, it’s such a win win. Just make this a sub division group from the main games.

Nintendo doesn't want creativity. They want total control. But the thing I want Nintendo, and Gamefreak to realize, other conpanies are far better off than they are. Look at Rockstar with FiveM. Rockstar once had a solid "No-Mods" policy, but then took advantage of the fact there was such a thing, and that they did better. Or Mojang with Minecraft. Think of how different the game would look without the modding community. Hell, some of the greatest modders now work for them! Imagine how much more nintendo could make if they opened up to the untapped markets!

I work as a game designer and have for a couple of years. My love for games and especially making games came from modding them - and I started with Pokèmon. I started dabbling with Pokèmon modding when I was about 12 years old (27 now) and I ALWAYS USED RELIC CASTLE as my hub. I get making money of their IP is kinda iffy - but if it weren't for Pokèmon modding I most likely wouldn't have been a game designer today. Its a source of inspiration. Its a shame that Nintendo / Game Freak don't understand this.
