What made the original series so memorable was that the comedic writing, especially in season 1, was so strong. I regularly found myself laughing out loud during it. No other series could so much as make me chuckle until that Magikarp episode in Journeys.

And yea the original series by far had the most funniest episodes bcs they were trying out things with the original series and to be honest id live with that crap that time there wasn't so much competition which made it even great so i just enjoyed this series as a whole best story has to be sinnoh tho ngl but still the og series makes me emotional happy excited and eager to watch nostalgia hits pretty hard and just makes us remember old days good old days:)

@PMDP S2806 I still think that ash should stay the protagonist until Johto because him not being a good trainer in Kanto was a core part of the characters.

@PMDP S2806 ”Who cares?” Anyone who actually values a little thing called character depth and development...Red isn’t a super competent trainer, he has a hollow husk that the player is meant to self insert into. He’s only ever as good as you are. Also, having a rookie trainer be highly competent from the start making absolutely zero sense. From OS-DP Ash actually has a clear and concise character arc about him developing to the point of becoming a very skilled and mature trainer. We want actual characters like that, not pieces of cardboard like Red.

Note 📝 for “Gotta Catch You Later”: Notably, out of all of Ash's long-term travelling companions, Misty is the *only* one to date who left him out of necessity *rather* than choice. All of Ash's other friends left him because they wanted to continue their journeys somewhere other than where Ash was going next, but even with her bike restored, Misty *may* have continued travelling with Ash if her sisters' departure had not required her to return to the Cerulean Gym.

......It still makes sense to me, though. Misty was always the Cerulean City gym leader in the games, but for most of her screen time in the original series, this seems to mostly have been forgotten about. With that in mind, having her finally take up the mantle as Cerulean City's gum leader officially, it kind of felt like her arc was coming full circle in a way; and to her credit, she was shown to be much more powerful of a trainer later in the series run, even eventually winding up with a mega Gyrados as her ace!

Considering the bigger context, I feel Misty would probably never grow as a person and achieving her goals if she continued traveling with Ash. Taking up the mantle of Cerulean's gym leader was inevitable, and it's basically the most logical way to base the writing for her farewell.

The irony about that was Misty could have still travel with Ash because at the beginning of the frontier arc Agatha was the stand in gym leader for Vridian city gym (Giovanni disappear or the writers had no explanation for his sudden departure as the gym leader)

They changed it because Brock didn’t want to be embarrassed by the fact that a sprinkler system helped Ash and Team Rocket interference led to Misty badge. Technically the only pity badge was Sabrinas the rest either Team Rocket interfered (Misty, Erica) or an outside object (Brock- Ash did reject the badge)

@@sooners2037 Ash didn’t reject Brock’s badge or he would’ve had another rematch with him. All he did was ask why Brock was giving to him when he forfeited and Brock said he earned it fair and square (lol) and for his love of Pokemon. Misty was against giving the badge to Ash, her sisters gave it to him for helping save the gym (and because “if he used Pikachu, he would’ve won”, as if that makes sense...), Erika gave it to him for rescuing Gloom. All of these are examples of pity badges. In the TR one, I guess it’s not really a pity badge (unless it was the universe taking pity on him lol), but that definitely wasn’t a legitimately earned badge either.

@@sooners2037 Also, they didn’t change anything. In several early Kanto episodes when Ash was flaunting around his two badges, Brock and Misty both said it was out of pity.

Bayleef is my favorite Johto member and from the original series. She is adorable, she wants to be the center of attention for Ash, her crush on Ash is cute, her jealousy is amusing and she is very loyal to Ash and she is just precious.

Gary probably didn't appear very often because he's always supposed to be 5 steps ahead of Ash unlike a rival like Paul who usually challenges a gym around the same time as him.

For real. In one episode Oak said Gary had caught over 200 Pokemon (in Kanto) even though Ash had seen more. The most we see of Gary's Pokemon is a COMPUTER SCREEN showing he has an Alakazam, Pinsir, Houndoom, Fearow, Skarmory and Kingdra. We want to see them!

@@denickart yeah but still I would have loved to see more of his pokemon and see him battle more the original series lasted 274 episodes and Gary appeared in less than 20 episodes and Gary had 5 official battles if you count the last minute of the battle in the indigo league and 4 battles against team rocket in the entire original series

@@denickart but him being absent make very less impact on Ash's character, he was like a childhood friend who just become Ash's rival, only one time Ash and Gary battle but it was just an excuse for Ash to travel to Johto after winning Orange league, while Rivals like Paul, Sawyer and Gladiom had bigger influence on Ash development specially Paul. Writers made that half pokeball backstory at last minute just to add more drama.

One thing I really enjoy from some of the Pokemon seasons is the roasts. Here are some I remember off the top of my head. Gary: HAHAHAHA I've never seen someone so pathetic Misty: Have you tried a mirror Meowth: When will you twerps just give it up!? James: No one likes a person who doesn't know when to give up! May: Then that explains why everyone hates you three! Alder: What say we forget about the tournament and find some lunch? Cynthia: I think you'll be dining alone as usual

Team Rocket Trio review Kanto : Bad Johto : Why do you exist? Hoenn : Bad Sinnoh : Starts good, ends bad. Unova : Great Kalos : kinda fine Alola : The most comedic part of the series, really Galar : A joke. And it works perfectly for just that.

For Unova while seeing them actually get serious for once and not appear in every episode was really nice, I will say that I think it could've been handled a bit better. Alola I think is their best region.

Sinnoh was when they actually got some decent pokemon like yanmega and carnivine. Even if carnivine sucked for most of the series, i loved it when James won a ribbon vs Dawn. They even had sad goodbyes in dustox and cacnea. I think they were pretty good. Very balanced compared to the comedy that they were up to that point and to how serious they were in unova.

The reason for Season 2 of Pokémon, folks: The anime blew up hard the United States 🇺🇸 as Saturday morning’s one new series at the time on The WB. Also with the high merchandise sales (toys, 🎮, VHS 📼) and box 📦 office success of Pokémon: The First Movie 🍿 in November 1999. Plus the Johto Journeys (season 3) wouldn’t be ready until October 14, 2000. Two choices, reruns of season 1 from February until October 2000 or quickly make a filler season unrelated to the anime in general to fill the space. Enter the Adventures of the Orange 🍊 Islands.

Wow you guys were fantastic and very thorough with everything. I remember going back to it earlier when I started my own except redoing my favorite episode list, and rewatching kanto and Johto. It is crazy how some episodes doesn’t hold up compared to now. Johto was a huge chore for me, but I do agree it does have its hidden gems. But you, JPR, and Niall Kelly nailed it and I am looking forward for more to come!!

@@pharaohyami5000 Probably it was supposed to be pronounced Lo-re-lie (Spelt it that way for pronunciation ease). So, it would be three syllables. Again, I read it on Bulbapedia so just stated it here... Pretty sure Lorelei if pronounced that way has a syllable more than Prima. But, people who have played the game would have been heck confused after they renamed her...😂😂

Great video! The original series definitely had a lot of problems in terms of its writing but it was still the first series so you have to give it credit for walking so the series after it could run even if they had their own problems with writing.

I was 4 years old when Pokemon first aired on TV in my region. Surprisingly I remembered the details when I re-watched the OG series years later. That's how impressionable it was. Enough to make me follow it for 20 years now.

Johto may have a lot of filler but imo they're still better than the filler in other regions(BW being the exception) cause the dynamic & slapstick of the original trio were still hilarious and didn't feel stale.

The reason they changed Lorelei to Prima is bc in Japanese, her name is Kanna, which is two syllables. To keep the episodes going, dubbing teams tend to try to keep the syllable count in sentences the same as the originals. Its not completely necessary but I can't speak on why dubbing teams do this. Edit: Another reason that Tracey was brought in thats lesser known is that when Pokemon started getting big, the series producers were worried the new western audience would find Brock racist.

A few years ago (I think around the time X & Y was airing) I tried re-watching *all* of the Pokemon anime but gave up some time around the early parts of Johto when the filler was hitting a bit too much. Kinda wish I continued through because the conclusion to Ash's journey in Johto and beating Gary was pretty satisfying.

What I like about OG series is that Ash and other behaved like REAL PEOPLE with full spectre of emotions even if some of them were negative, after OG (exception is XY in some ways) Ash and other got way more flanderised, got plain and had limited growth and emotions, it's the same as with Sponge Bob, who in first seasons behaved like more or less adequate young adult and then got dumber, flanderised and too childish.

Fantastic start to the Anime Review Series! This was super interesting and definitely a great dissection of the original series, not really any points that I disagree with. I love the original but definitely can see it’s far from the best, particularly Johto. Also that Filler gag is hysterical I loved it. Great start and I can’t wait for the other reviews, particularly Unova just because I have a few bones to pick with it that I’m sure are gonna be talked about. (What a wasted series for great games)
