in one episode he says he rotates all of his pokemon and doesnt stick to a strict team, but you can still see some of his pokemon like arcanine in his battle against giovanni right before ash gets his eighth badge. it does kinda stink that we never even learned which starter he chose though

@@ghostghost8806 It was around Cinnabar Island where momentum began to shift in Ash's favor in the rivalry with Gary. Only Ash got the Volcano Badge. Only Ash got the Earthbadge. Ash WATCHED Gary lose the Indigo League after all the shit he was talking since the show began, and then placed higher than him in said League. Yes, he lost to Ritchie, but seeing Ash place higher than him was a humbled Gary from that point forward. Ash won the Orange League, and aside from a loss to Eevee, Ash was the one who was ahead from that point onward. Beating Gary in the Johto League was iconic, and has only been topped a couple of times. For a person who talked trash, Gary NEVER placed higher than Ash. It was a good end to Ash's initial character, as we know from that battle onward, Ash finally started becoming a competent battler, namely in Diamond & Pearl. Unlike Gary, Paul actually beat some humility into Ash. Notice Ash is a more humble guy since those days. I REALLY hope Gary and Paul return for the Champion League in Sword & Shield though.

According to few league episodes he had a arcanine blastoise nidoking golem and kingler and eve Edit - I forgot about electrabuzz he was shown for only 5 seconds but I had noticed it

Well yhea, at least to me, I'm ok with him losing the first 3 major leagues. The first one was obviously going to end up in failure because most of his badges didn't prove that he was a good trainer, but that he was a nice guy, he also was lucky that the Pokemon he caught were probably a bit stronger than average. The second one to me is Ash actually earning his way through the league. It shows that he grew, but that he still has things to learn. The same goes for the third one, but also because his skills were proven in the battle frontier rather than the Hoen league. Every league afterwards, he should have won, especially Sinho (since they literally had to create a guy with legendaries to make sure he didn't win) and Unova (because in theory, he should have been the better trainer and because the only other trainer that had some resemblance to skill was Vergil, and that is mainly because of the way he was hyped)

BUT after getting to defeat 5 out of his 6 pokemon, an.d basically giving tobias the fight of his life legendaries or not especially if ash had brought the big guns: Sceptile, Pikachu of course but also Snorlax, Chariard, Glalie, Kingler (this last 2 because this 2 were monsters in battle. either always ties or wins. kingler even had to be taken out on comission by basically deus ex machinas in johto. twice). @@ck-1649 Yes. I really think Ash could have gotten further and even taken out that girl's Ivysaur in the next round. But I was so hurt when his Charizard wouldn't battle for him, and that was one time I really wanted Team Rocket to f*** off. But I still give props to Ash for letting his Pidgeotto rest after somehow getting him there to the arena. That was crazy!

@@gamingcreatesworlddd2425 yep. It's the same thing when Charizard wanted to battle Blaine's Magmar. It really screwed Ash that time, and I actually cried when he lost. But the reality is that even though Team Rocket's interference was part of the problem, it was really Ash's fault for not taking the time to train it more so it would listen to him.

Yeah man honestly speaking ash may have even gotten to top4 venue his first loss. He had one over Ritchie I feel and would have won under normal circumstances.

yeah while the execution is unfair and iffy the way he sorta has to choose Charizard, it shows him he cant expect to win without training his whole team and that he has a lot to learn and life isn't fair...maybe he will learn to not fall for team rockets tricks aka become less naïve cause it cost him but as we know he wont...

@@Jahof20s Well yeah, Ritchie was fine and was helpful in teaching Ash that it's ok to lose. Just the WAY he lost was what sucked and how his "friends" showed NO sympathy, especially Misty.

I mean, I feel like Ash was doing alright against Ritchie, but he had to use Charizard because Team Rocket sabotaged him. If he'd been able to use, say, Pidgeotto had been able to battle, who knows? I think he did alright for his first try. Sure, it's on Ash for not training Charizard, to a degree (Though IMO, Charizard's disobedience had more to do with the psychological scars left by his abuse at Damian's hands than any fault of either of them), but still.

Lol dude if they really wanted to do that so why not just let him lose agaisnt richie fairly that richie teams seems too pathetic for pokemon league. If ash loses fair and square all your so called karma justified, they force ash to use charizard so what he can do, not choose charizard and give up and teach kids that you should just give up and accept lose without trying.

@@inamdaryasin His team was almost the same as Ash's team, but is heavily implied that Ritchie is a better trainer than Ash. The lesson is that Ash got lucky troughout his Kanto journey, including having the luck of an OP Charizard, but he could never teach him and train him because he was too proud in his own abilities. Thats what cost him, his luck finally abandoned him when the TR tired his pokemons and Ash was not ready to face the challenge, just like many kids in real life are not ready because they lacked the discipline, skill and maturity. But after that, Ash humbles himself and becomes a much better trainer, understanding the hardships of becoming a Pokemon Master and soon bonding with Charizard, getting many epic wins with him, including his long time rival Gary in the Johto League. He learns to become a better person with his failures, thats what most will strive to do as they come of age in real life, thats why the defeat against Ritchie, exactly the way it was, made sense both narratively as thematically, and was a great ending to a charming and iconic first season. I know this video and the comments are old, but my reply will stand for future generations to understand the significance of this brilliant moment in the Pokemon anime history.

Zealious Zone if he made it to the finals? Pikachu, Bulbasaur and Charizard. Ash still would’ve lost but the defeat wouldn’t have been as humiliating. I would’ve had Ash send out Charizard first but it doesn’t get disqualified, it’s just asleep so Ash calls it back and Pikachu and Bulbasaur get wrecked and finally Charizard comes out and puts on a huge battle against whatever Pokémon ash was battling against, maybe a Kangaskhan or Alakazam, since it’s Gen 1, we’d need something we haven’t seen before or something OP

@@Eric-py8yy useless in what basis, because of May and Dawn we got something different than gym battles and league, before AG only Ash got any development because of that we had soooooooo much fillers in OS as Brock was supporting character while misty was just there.

Ash fought Erika but their battle got interrupted half-way through when Team Rocket accidentally sets fire to the gym. Ash risks his life to save Erika's Gloom from the fire so she gives him the badge as a reward.

Especially since Sleep was a status condition and NOT a call to count as a KO.

British Media Bully May I hear those reasons

Season 1 wasn't very faithful to the games half the time. Pikachu defeating Ground Types with electric attacks in several episodes, Charmander defeating Golem with a fire spin yet Bulbasaur lost to the same Golem, Ash getting a Haunter to defeat Sabrina's Psychic Types (Ghosts did jack shit to Psychics in Gen 1), etc. Gen 1 was already broken enough with its flawed mechanics so imagine how more broken it would have been if what is shown in the anime is 100% true? I don't like Ash as a character in this era of Pokemon, while he did sometimes have moments of inspiring courage, he could be very insufferable because of his constant bragging and shouting. He had quite the ego for someone who had barely accomplished anything remarkable yet. There's also the arguments between Misty and Ash which are really draining to put up with for roughly 80 episodes. I got sick of their "oh so funny" dynamic quickly. A lot of the gym battles sucked, i understand that it had a low budget but even then, they could have found shortcuts more creative than the repetitive "Team Rocket do something bad and they need to be stopped" formula. Also, the way Ash earns the gym badges most of the time goes against the point of having gym battles in the games. Gym badges are designed for those who can defeat gym leaders in a battle, if Ash retrieves them through accomplishments outside that context (stopping Misty's gym from flooding, cheering up Sabrina with a cheeky haunter), then the badges lose their intended value, and we don't feel like he earned them fairly. There's also the cheap animation which I don't mind although it can hold back on production values and make a lot of the battles boring to watch.

I would have to say both the Sinnoh and Kalos leagues are my favourites. Sinnoh because of how well paced it is and Ash vs Paul was an extremely hyped battle that delivered so much. Kalos because it has some amazing battles especially the finale. Both aren't perfect however. Sinnoh had a ridiculous, almost out of nowhere finale that led to Ash's downfall and Kalos's middle was rushed as if we've skipped one or two battles.
