Glitch City is the closest thing to purgatory I've seen in any game. Elegiac music, both calming and disconcerting, plays as you wander a fractured mess of vaguely familiar tiles. Unreadable signs and false doors taunt you as you meander past shattered houses and random fencework. You rarely catch a glimpse of someone else, but these are just mere illusion. You are alone in an abstract prison of your own construction.
It makes a lot more sense to see this game engine being basically held up with superglue and prayers, when you consider that at a certain point Game Freak was on the border of bankruptcy and the code had to be patched up into completion by their music composer of all things, Jun-Ichi Masuda
The only reason the series survived was because Satoru Iwata took a special interest in it, basically saved Stadium and GSC from sucking hardcore, and then went and became the President of Nintendo and let them take as much time as they needed to fix things. Remember - GS was due *in 1997* and quietly got delayed to 1999. And this was *before* he was President, or even technically employed by Nintendo - likely because of how highly he was regarded by Yamauchi. When Yamauchi retired and named Iwata as his successor, the first games that started development afterward were DP. Which again got delayed, but especially with the upgrades featured in their third version Platinum, have gone on to be considered where the series peaked. It's no coincidence that the games following Iwata's sudden illness and death started declining in quality.

0:39 Warning: Game health low! Interesting effects, caused by a basic out of bounds read for animations. Actually intimidating how long it runs in the first place, considering we are executing garbage. And even more surprising that you can keep it going for 20 minutes with some simple fixes. I guess we could also use this as arbitrary code execution if we modify the "patches" to not return but instead jump back to the overworld loop. However, I think the game is pretty much fried at this point anyway, at least the VRAM (depending on how much bs is copied around)
the style of these videos is so comfy, with just the music and text! I'd love to see a full 20-minute recording of the glitched animation script, as odd of a request as that may be, i think a lot of people would find it strangely relaxing.

There's something about the animation at 3:02 that just feels so... mournful. The quiet, empty music playing alongside a bizarre rotating mess of glitch tiles makes it feel like the game is slowly dying, and trying to get one last performance in before it crashes for good.
I hope when you find time for item 392 on your To-Do list, that you can make upload full, uncut footage of as long as these glitch screens go as possible

I remember doing a similar thing back on the actual GB hardware using a gameshark back in like, 2003, I left the "Catch Opponents Pokemon" cheat code enabled (Didn't turn the gameshark off) and it threw a pokeball in the overworld, it didn't cause any glitch city or anything wild like that, but it oddly enough did catch missingno.
Great video, I was actually thinking about those weird overworld pokeball throws a few days ago, so thanks! One question I still have (and more I gained) is what's up with the music and sound effects? Firstly, what on earth is the sound effect when you first throw a glitch pokeball (the one at the beginning of the video), I've never heard that in normal gameplay before. Also, why do both music and sound effects (including that one) start playing at random intervals, often slowed down or corrupted? What horrid abominations have caused this?
I'm pretty sure the sound effect that plays right after throwing the glitch pokeball at the beginning of the video is one of the jingles that you can hear when asking Oak to evaluate your Pokedex.

that tune that first shows up 0:18 and repeats throughout the video kept dragging my attention away from the explanations and stuff. I know it's just 1 audio channel from some other tune in the game (although which one I can't place) but it's so small and melancholy, which sounds so out of place in a Pokemon game. It sounds like the opening of a song that would leave you emotionally devastated, which I guess is somewhat fitting for the in-universe implications of glitch cities
Love these videos. One suggestion I'd make is adding some visual indicator to either show the text you have will change soon or has changed, like a bar that shrinks between the text and game fields, or boxes around the text that change color every time the text changes. Something about your videos I will sometimes be reading and I get lost and have to start over because I think it changed or the text changes before I finish.

Doubt that ZZAZZ will see this, but an interesting thing to see would be "unavalable", literally, glitch pokemon, aka IDs (not decimal, pokedex id) of 152-255
i believe the game only stores the information of Pokemon using their internal IDs and not their pokedex IDs, if that's what you're referring to Then again I might also be misinterpreting your comment or complete wrong because I'm not as knowledgeable with RBY's code
@@neevko267 grabbed the idea from another video, "fixing glitch pokemon sprites". So it'd be interesting to see what the game throws out as the sprite, or lack there of. So it's more like "unused" glitch sprites more than glitch pokemon. So yes, my initial idea was wrongly worded
glitch explorations like this is something i've always wanted to do like this, i tried the specific emulator thats used for this, but i cannot find how and where to beggin to understand the binary of the game data to experiment with, is there somewhere i can exactly beggin? or is this just knowledge over the years that you somehow grab? its really impressive either way, i love coming back to your videos every so often
I've got a suggestion for a potential video (forgive me if this has been done before, but I couldn't find anything after a quick search). Exactly what happens when you get into a wild encounter with no pokemon in your party, as in before you even get your starter? I've seen videos of people doing it (generally with a walk through walls hack), but I've never seen it explained on a technical level. It's interesting to me since something different happens in every generation.
at 7:57, what's the ????? next to nidoking and fire punch? is there just not an item associated with that identifier? this is a sidenote also, but i'm kinda curious what order the initializers are sorted in if any (for instance pound being the first move, notable also probably is rhydon being the first pokemon listed there seeing as how it was literally the first pokemon)
