In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, you can barely see Shiny Pokemon in the world before you encounter them in battle! This is a nightmare for Shiny Hunting, and especially combined with the fact that most of the Gen 9 shinies are barely different from their non-shiny forms, it's super easy to miss a shiny Pokemon now. What gives!? Why would GameFreak do this? Well today Tama is gonna walk you through the history of Shiny Pokemon mechanics to find out what might have motivated this change.

I heard a theory that there's no shiny sparkle and sound in these games, because there are so many pokémon spawning out of bounds, behind every wall basically, so you would have a shiny sound of a pokémon you literally couldn't get to pretty often, which would be even more frustrating than just racing by too quickly

My big issue with the shiny Pokémon in overworld is that the lighting itself can really mess with the color of Pokémon and make it harder to tell at times, I almost missed a shiny mankey which is green because the lighting made both the shiny and regular dulled out like crazy

I think the best solution would be to handle it like in LGPE. No sound to potentially alert you that you missed a shiny, but a visual sparkle effect to reinforce that the Pokemon you're looking at is really shiny. It really shouldn't be difficult to tell when you're staring directly at it
@RadicalKingJames

It’d be nice if you could see the shiny symbol (✨) next to a Pokémon’s name when you zoom in on it in the overworld. You have to be close enough to investigate it, but you don’t have to start a battle with it just to be 100% certain whether a Pokémon is shiny or not.

While I can understand the reasons brought up as to why both the sparkles and sound are gone as well as why this is the first 3D region with an abundant number of shinies that suffer from Garchomp syndrome, I still can't say I like the decision. I feel like between having to miss a few shinies I *was* aware of and constantly feeling like I'm missing something I'd take the former. I'm gonna miss a lot anyway, at least I know I struck out now.

Personally I find SV’s shiny hunting very anti disabilities. I suffer from a form of colour blindness which stops me from seeing certain types of colours, so I can’t distinguish between some regular Pokémon and shiny Pokémon. I also find it hard to see really minute details on Pokémon such as Frittle. I think PLA perfected shiny hunting for a lot of players who share the same disabilities as me. I would love if they either added back the shiny over world sparkle seen in PLA or even LGPE or a chime at least 😊
@BigBadSkullBoss
@BigBadSkullBoss Год назад
no fr, at the very least, they could have given shiny pokemon a little particle shine effect that you could spot from a little bit away, even if it didnt make a sound, it would be a middle-ground between what was in PLA and what we got in SV

@@BigBadSkullBoss Right, and I wouldn’t mind that. It didn’t have to be in your face, but once you are in the direction of that shiny, a little spark or the LGPE shiny aura would be nice. Honestly, it feels like SV are just major steps down from Arceus. I got Arceus AFTER I got SV since I originally skipped it but ended up getting it for Christmas. I used to breed shiny competitive Pokemon in older games and I love shiny hunting for funsies on my own so I was stoked to try it in SV but it was such a miserable experience that I actually started to make myself physically ill multiple times from riding in circles resetting picnics and focusing so intensely on the Pokemon glitching into the environment. I've also fully skipped trying to shiny hunt certain Pokemon like Tatsugiri due to the fact that each form has a different freakin' shiny and they're SO. SMALL. Getting Arceus for Christmas and playing it after dumping hours into SV made me regret those hours spent. It felt like they had all these great ideas and concepts for Arceus that were dropped for SV purely because they were so determined to make an open world game while not actually knowing how to make and program an open world game. I've been playing Pokmon since 1998 and grown up with + played every main line game, so I want to cut it slack but just like...they don't have a big enough team, they don't have the programming chops or knowledge, and they're rushing these games out too fast. The lack of indicators isn't demanding skill of the player, it's a lack of feature they didn't have the time/ability to program in due to other limitations they caused by lack of time/ability. Sorry this turned into a novel, I was genuinely looking forward to hearing your take and appreciated it. I just can't fully agree with it. I will however say you're freakin' right about Veronica Taylor forever being the voice of Ash to me haha

Something that's worth noting, which has probably been mentioned already but bears repeating, is that your Pokemon will NOT attack a shiny Pokemon in an auto battle via the Let's Go mechanic. This is particularly helpful for Ditto, Zorua, and Zoroark as they won't appear as a shiny of whatever Pokemon they're currently disguised as.
@trendybrendy4483
@trendybrendy4483 Год назад
I think a significant downside to the way SV handles it though is how disproportionately not having a sound effect or animation punishes players who don't see color the same as everyone else. One of my best friends is color blind, (he has real trouble seeing the difference between standard and shiny Kyogre, as well as seeing some shades of green differently) and I don't think it's just a coincidence that he's the only one of our friend group who still has yet to find a shiny in these games. I wonder if you could approach a subject like accessibility in a future Tama Byte. So many games have upsides and downsides- like how LGPE may have been more accessible to people who had a tough time reading text on a small 3DS screen by nature of being on a home console and TV, but forced motion controls is a pretty big sticking point in communities where accessibility in gaming is discussed.

This is a very informative breakdown of how Shiny hunting works in Scarlet and Violet. While I don't actively Shiny hunt, I have friends who do, so I'll share this with them. I really like how you analyzed the changes in how Shiny hunting works between Legends: Arceus and Scarlet and Violet and theorized the justifications for those changes based on the changes to the games' mechanics.
@nidohime6233
@nidohime6233 Год назад
I think the lack of a sound effect for shinies could have been just an oversight. It was a inplemetation for Legends Arceus that for whatever reason the didn't bother to bring it to Scarlet and Violet too since Game Freak was divided in different groups during development of both games and maybe not everyone knew they add this mechanic to Legends Arceus. It goes with the many bugs and glitches Scarlet and Violet have along with some odd things that used to work before but now not. For example you can order your Pokémon moves in your team but not in the boxes, something that never happend since Gen 3. Another one is you cannot nickname Pokémon in the boxes when in the Let's Go and Legends Arceus you could do that. I wonder if the studio have such messy enviroment, or is a consequence of crunch that increases the amount of mistakes in the newer games.
@AdeptCharon
@AdeptCharon Год назад
Yes, I think the reason they didn't have the sound/sparkle is because the combination of more complex map (easier for pkmn to spawn out of sight and/or reach) and how pkmn despawn creates huge potential for a frustrating experience, but probably also because, combined with the much higher number of spawns overall, shinies announcing themselves like in legends:Arceus basically becomes a common event that disrupts the gameplay. Even in Legends I sometimes felt like the sound interrupted everything else I was doing at any point it happened, in order to look around and play a game of spot the shiny... So personally I actually do not want them to do the sound/sparkle the way Legends:Arceus does it in SV or in future games. Instead, I can think of a number of other ways to "improve" the experience of finding shinies that I think would be nice: - display a shiny symbol next to the Pkmn name, in menus and in the wild (or/and different colored name) AND make Pkmn names more easy to see in general (the LZ button functionality in SV is just trash in its current state.. - I mean maybe add a toggle to display pkmn names on your screen when close enough in general) - add a sound effect to shinies BUT have it only play once you get relatively close to them (so it doesn't go off when the shiny isn't remotely relevant to what you're actually experiencing) - have new Pkmn games have an actual artstyle where Pkmn STAND OUT instead of blending in with an unexciting environment due to some dated striving for muh realism. The lack of outlines + weather/lighting as in SV is more often detrimental than it adds to the experience, but this gets quite subjective... + also, in regards to people with visual impairments, they should try to make the game itself more color-blindness friendly, whether inherently or as optional settings, because it's 2023.

I don't want to gatekeep others' shiny experience, but I'm definitely of the camp that what makes shinies exciting is their rarity, so the rarer they are, the more exciting they are to find. When I found a shiny Tangela in Crystal, it felt like my heart was going to leap out of my chest, it was such a special moment. When I find a shiny in Violet, my reaction is just "Oh, neat." I miss when it was 1 in 8000. Of course, I realize I'm probably just in the niche here, so I think a middle ground for this would simply to make the boosting odds all optional. Most of them are, but some, like gen 6 and up doubling the odds, or the gen 8 increase with each Pokemon defeated, are automatic and involuntary. It'd also be nice to be able to complete the dex without opting in to the charm either, at least it should have an option to be able to be turned off.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention things like marks or size differences, which I think were intended to add another way of making each Pokémon feel unique and individual. The knock-on effect is that even though shiny Pokémon are easier (read: more accessible) than ever, finding a shiny Pokémon with a special mark is very hard, and finding an especially large or small shiny Pokémon with a mark even more so. I think it’s a result that should appease players who feel like shinies have become “cheapened” in recent gens.

Honestly as someone who loves to shiny hunt I do not love shiny hunting in scarlet and violet. The lack of an indicator is annoying making me feel like I pass so many shinies. Also getting herba mystica is such a pain! I do full odds hunts for gen 3 which can take forever so In the more modern games I prefer easy shinies. So having to get herba mystica and play spot the difference makes shiny hunting in this game less fun for me.

It's also worth noting how so many potential shiny Pokémon are unable to be caught because they spawn in areas which can't be reached by the player, e.g. stuck inside walls. I'm sure lots of players would get frustrated quickly if they could hear/see a shiny right nearby but not be able to catch it. However, in my opinion the trade off isn't worth it when you consider how inaccessible shiny hunting in SV is for players with colour blindness, impaired vision, etc. I hope they go back to including the shiny sparkle and sound effect in the next Pokémon title. 🙏 Great video btw!! As someone who loves deep dives on Pokémon and game design, your Tama Bytes series has been super interesting and enjoyable!

It would be nice if that, in ScarVo, whenever a shiny does actually spawn in a cluster of pokemon or just in general, the game would make that specific Pokemon not be able to despawn unless you were to go into the main city, cross some invisible threshold separating the areas between each other, or exiting the game without saving, that way if people run past it and notice it at the last second, or if they even pass it, go to the Pokemon center, and pass by it again, they won't miss a shiny. I will say though, with the situation we have currently in the games, being careful and not constantly running is the way to go so you can't lose a full odds overworld shiny. But imo, if it's a shiny that's barely different from its base colors (like the Gengar line, Garchomp, the Snorlax line, Charcadet, the krikitune line, to name a few), you shouldn't feel bad about missing it, because it realistically isn't really worth it. It's barely different, it's ok. Maybe it's just me though 😅

I agree, and I think another part of why they don’t play any sound in particular is just the sheer amount of Pokémon that’s spawn out of bounds, which they were certainly aware of. I can imagine people hearing a sound for Pokémon they were unable to get and going mad searching forever for it. It is cool, however, but they also made shiny Pokémon behave differently than normal Pokémon. For example, shiny voltorbs don’t explode, and Pokémon that can flee don’t when shiny. Shiny Pokémon also stay on screen for longer ranges and despawn less frequently

You would think that since PLA and SV both have their foundations in the same engine, something as small as the shiny indicator would carry over. Sometimes i really think PLA is better than SV because that game feels like it was crafted with a lot more love and respect for its source material whereas SV has clearly suffered from the corporate machine of Pokemon the brand forcing out the game to co-incide with the likely years of plans the higher ups have made for the entire proceeding generation of games. Even a year on (happy birthday PLA) i find myself going back to Legends: Arceus more than i do SV despite the newness factor which is strange because despite not really liking sword/shield that much, i have over 200 hours in those games. Idk what im really trying to say, but what I do know is these videos really make me stop and reflect and think.

Five are from SV alone, and I had two before I beat the first gym. It's almost more rare now to meet someone in a raid who isn't using a shiny. It's just a strange transition, that's all.

Loved the video. Personally I wouldn't go out of my way to shiny hunt, I am ok with randomly finding them during my playthroughs. It makes them more special for me. As for another video topic, i would love if you talked about the title of legendary pokemon, for example what are the basic "criteria" that make a pokemon legendary and how in the more recent games term "legendary" doesn't feel like that anymore, since there are pokemon that are almost as strong as legendaries without reason.
@yacheberries843
@yacheberries843 Год назад
!!! Yeah, talking about Legendary Pokémon and their criteria is a really good topic idea!! I used to think that accessibility was the issue, with a pair of games every generation since ORAS always having an option to capture every single Legendary potentially devaluing them... but really, that shouldn't be an issue. More accessibility is always a good thing, especially since it doesn't force anyone to hunt down an expensive copy of HeartGold/SoulSilver or Colosseum and play through the whole game just to get themselves a Ho-oh. Nah, the issue is definitely what you mentioned - how stat distribution and power creep is really making them feel.. not as "Legendary". Especially when sub-catagories like the Ultra Beasts and Paradox Pokémon keep being introduced that are basically Legendaries but officially not classified as them, with stat spreads and broken abilities that are arguably more powerful than a majority of Legendaries. It's a very interesting conundrum.

As someone who bred a shiny Mareep in gsc , i only did it because of the color regardless of the rarity (since the odds are 1/128) and i just really adore its shiny form (it looks like cotton candy ^_^)

also in SV auto battling is a good way to see if a pokemon is shiny or not - your pokemon will refuse to fight a shiny, making it a good way to spot shinies that don't look too different from the normal ones

I'm a very casual Pokemon player. The only shiny I've encountered was an Eevee distributed in a Diamond/Pearl event. Never once encountered a shiny in the wild. Not that I've gone shiny hunting. And last game I (nearly) completed was Sun/Moon so idk.

Playing Violet worrying I might be overlooking a shiny is a tad stressful. This is my first playthrough so I'm more focused on experiencing all the new stuff not really on combing the area with a fine toothed comb. It does kind of suck because I would love to have a legit shiny but I really don't want to spend hours/dayd on it. It doesn't feel satisfying, it feels like a chore. I tried in the past and I was intensely bored.

Shinies have been massively devalued because of all the hacking. Wish game freak would actually develop a somewhat competent algorithm to catch these hacked Pokémon when people try to battle or trade with them.

Counterpoint to the no-Shiny Indicator in S/V: When rushing around on Koraidon/Miraidon, you can flick the stick back in the direction you came from to immediately begin a sliding turn and shift your direction. It barely sends you flying and can easily be used as a break if you think you passed a Shiny and want to make a check. It would be a lot simpler if even just the noise popped up so you can begin sleuth mode

I actually stopped playing Arceus because I got 3 shinys in 2 days while still going through the normal story. I felt kinda bummed that they weren't that rare anymore even though I wasn't doing anything to increase their odds. It took me from gen 2 to Alpha Sapphire to get my first shiny so getting several really quickly just kinda made me a little annoyed with them

It's silly that there is no silly indication especially with how small some of the pokemon are. I am always worried I am running past shinies with so many pokemon barely visiable. I have two shinies, 1 is a Hariyama, which is massive, so hard to miss. The other is a sinistea, which I accidentally biked into as I was making a turn. Would have 100% just zoomed past it if not for pure coincidence.

S/v is the first game that I legit shiny hunted and once I figured out the sandwich method, I had a full party of shinys in less than a week and I ran out of Pokémon I wanted to shiny hunt. Haven’t actually played the game in a month or two at this point lol.

I agree that not having the shiny sparkle might just be a consequence of technical issues. Though I think they could have worked around it with some programming tricks, like giving shiny Pokemon a higher despawn range or something like that. On the other hand, I think it's also possible that the shiny sparkle just didn't return from Legends because both games were developed in parallel. By the time Legends released, Scarlet and Violet were probably already in beta. It's very possible that they just didn't get the chance to utilize any learnings from Legends for Scarlet and Violet. Whatever the case, while I do personally want the shiny sparkle to return, not having it does make accidentally bumping into one a lot more thrilling.

For me, the most controversial change in shiny hunting was when they decided to make the shiny charm non functional for wild encounters in BDSP, despite the item description in game saying that it does. I hunted exactly one shiny Pokemon in BDSP before I stopped. I gave up on Darkrai and Shaymin because 1/4096 is awful in 2023.

Ok, so a friend of mine (who did not cite a source) said that the reason they removed the overworld sparkle + sound is that so many Pokemon spawn out of bounds (inside walls, below the map, etc) that during playtesting, players were getting frustrated that they would hear the sparkle and not be able to find the Pokemon, or find that it was stuck in a wall. So rather than fixing the spawning conditions, it was easier to just sweep the problem under the rug (or under the map lol) by removing the animation. Again, take it with a grain of salt, as I don't know where my friend got this info. But we're both game devs ourselves and it seems like a very realistic theory to us.

I was shiny hunting skowpoke for the 7 star raid cuz i like to be fancy like that and it was a nightmare unless you got lucky and found a shiny slowbro instead its almost impossible to tell the difference. I literally got lucky and bumped into it. And when its night time its even harder cus they already look different. I love that they made shiny hunting easy but still rare enough that you are unlikely to find one without trying. I believe there was a problem with people buying shiny pokemon online and by making them a little easier. They allow people who don't have the time to spend literally hours if not days of their life looking for a shiny and by doing this they could potentially eliminate or at less reduce illegal pokemon trading.

An anti-frustration feature in SV's Shiny hunting is that certain Shiny Pokémon will behave differently in the overworld. Voltorb won't explode, Sudowoodo will run more slowly, and Sandygast won't dissolve in the rain, for some examples. However, they're not guaranteed to show the same mercy in battle if they have a self-KO move.
