The "illegal moves" in question are Ice Punch, Fire Punch, and Thunderpunch on Alakazam, and they ceased to be illegal in October of 2000 (though there's no way to go back in time and inform Stadium 1 of that fact).
Thanks for the video! I just destroyed the R2 Pika Cup with a L20 Surf/Psychic/Thunder/Blizzard Starmie. (I didn't have the Thunderbolt TM, and Blizzard was better than Ice Beam since I wasn't going for speed.) I just fed it vitamins and it was OHKOing left and right, and I doubt it had max DVs, so max stats aren't necessary.
That drowzee's special has to be pretty high enough to survive a stab surf from a level 20 maxed out stats starmie... and yes, levels do make a huge impact, which is why many consider this to be the hardest for rental runs, especially since the 3/4 of the second half uses level 20s.

Starmie's Special trumps Nidoking's Attack; its Special even more so. Furthermore, Starmie can get moves with excellent type coverage, all of which run off special, and best of all Starmie is fast and doesn't give up attacks to anywhere near as many Pokemon. There's really nothing Nidoking brings to this cup that isn't outclassed.
thanx for the post, i always thot dragon rage was the best way to beat the pika cup, but i was wrong...! although for ur backup lvl 15s its not a bad move... not that u need them! btw sadistic wat other pokemon r gud for pika cup for the lvl 20 position besides starmie? cud u list the movesets too
D/P give more versatility to starmie, as opposed to the first gen, which, reallistically, only has 2 good sets starmie, all out assualt, which mystic is using, or boltbeam with recover and surf.
@lightyoshiman Like SadisticMystic said, that's only for cups where your pokemon's level isn't limited (and Gym Leader Castle). You'll notice that not all of the AI's pokemon are level 15... there is one level 20 in there too. The AI has to follow the Pika cup rules that three pokemon you enter in a match cannot exceed the level total of 50. So if the AI uses a 20 like Sadistic Mystic does, the other two pokemon have to be level 15, or it'll go over 50. (20 + 15 + 15 = 50)
finally i won :D (not with starmie, but 5 pokemons lvl 16 - 18 , and a rental ) i think "pika cup" is the hardest ... btw nice video and excellent starmie ;)
SDA should accept games with no true linear objective like stadium because this was a very good run. They don't understand games like Mario Party, Poke Stadium and other party games. I just beat this cup the other day using rentals, lucky for me i had a continue on the last fight, only because Narish wrecked me the first time. I actually went back to RBY team building just to beat this game. did you use alakazam on 6 because at lvl 20 it outspeeds electrode?
That's how it works in Gym Leader Castle, where you're expected to put the entire team at the same level. In the three level-limited cups, it's not even possible to run a full team at the level cap (20 in this case), and using a single 20 means your other two Pokemon in that battle must be at the minimum (15).
An item ball on Silph 10F. No I don't remember which one, or if it's in an area you can only reach by warp panel. All I remember is that that's where it is. Just check everywhere you can until you find it.
The only Pokemon that are disallowed in Pika Cup are Mewtwo and Mew. Anything else that you can get at that level, even by means not considered conventional as of March 2000, is allowed. For Snorlax it's just a matter of hatching a Snorlax egg in GSC; GSC also allows you to catch L10 Sandslash at Mt. Moon. Kangaskhan is similarly available, but getting Golem into the cup requires FCBM.
The elemental punches can be taught via TMs in Generation II. Max out EVs and IVs of Speed and Special. EVs: any/any/any/65535/65535 IVs: 3+/any/any/15/15 Blizzard had a higher accuracy in Generation I. (90 compared to 70)
I have analysis out there that shows why on a combined 50 cap, 20-15-15 just plain beats 19-16-15, and that 18-16-16 or 17-17-16 are even worse. If the Clefable is the key player on the team, leaving Lapras back at 15 would be advised so that Clefable can get every bit of "oomph" available to it. However, Lapras is probably more advisable in the 20 slot except for the fact that it's slow.
Think of it this way: In that last battle, Nairish will survive Starmie's Ice Beam unless I get a critical. If it were Niteish instead, I wouldn't have to worry about any possibility of it getting to attack back. Dragonair is less vulnerable, and stats don't matter much if it's going to be using Wrap (and not at all for Dragon Rage). If it throws fewer red flags, and is a preferred choice even notwithstanding that, isn't that win-win?
@SaffronSkunk no I mean look at his level this cup is for pokemon from 15 to level 20 if you have at least one pokemon thats level 20 than dont all the cpus pokemon become level 20 just like if you have a pokemon thats level 17 or something
Electrode is level 15 and not hard to outrace. The reason I went with Alakazam was for more brute force against Raichu and particularly Porygon--it actually worked out as a detriment because those didn't show up, and while Alakazam can usually take down Charmeleon, this time it managed to just hang on.
actually you could replace the ice beam with a thunderwave if you're going to follow up with a pokemon that knows wrap or fire spin. But realistically, those 2 sets are the only great ones that starmie has.
Everything looks real to me man. So what if the moves aren't eligible in stadium 1. The game is so biased against the player you have no choice but do go above to win. Great run!
Substitute necessarily takes away from some of Starmie's type coverage. Pika Cup is about disposing opponents in a single hit if possible, and attempting to play defense here is almost always futile. 18 damage to Starmie isn't hard to get, so Substitute is a 1:1 turn exchange that isn't worth a moveslot.
At the time I made this, I hadn't yet hit upon the "Announcer Chronicles" formula, and the dull, automated announcing in the game is just cheesier than having none at all.
I find Gyarados to be a poor choice, since its Attack stat is mostly wasted, it can't get Psychic, and it's slower to as to lose initiative against other L20s plus get critical hits less often. Aside from the novelty of "OMG I have L7 Articuno/Hypno/Jolteon!", you may want to rethink those choices. They don't fill any role a L15 needs to fill here; Pika Cup is different enough from Prime that you can't just take Pokemon considered good in a vacuum and expect that success to carry over to this.
Not really. Thunder Wave + Wrap is very slow, defeating the purpose of a speedrun, and even if that's not the goal then it's a lot less reliable than some seem to think it is. Dragon Rage, while generally useful in the low levels, still ends up 2-hitting in this cup a lot more than it 1-hits, so using it means giving the opponent some chances to take down your star or at least slow it down.
Dragonite is not particularly useful in the Pika Cup, at least not in the sense of overall power that Starmie or Alakazam can give. Note that Mewtwo and Mew are explicitly banned (and they're the only Pokemon banned), so getting them at level 7 (or 1 for that matter) isn't of use for this cup.
i personally used the lvl 50 starmie set i had below (surf, tbolt, twave, recover), lvl 55 dragonite (wrap, agility, blizzard, hyper beam), lvl 50 golem (EQ, rock slide, body slam, explosion), and a lvl 50 alakazam (don't remember the moveset). sinc the foundation of my team was built aound those 4 i just added on a rental zapdos which does pretty well on his own in this cup, and a rental chansey. I won the cup without having to retart any battles and got about 6 cont. there are better teams.
humm right now im in R-2 but ive notice that you guys can change your pokemon level but how?? im always using L15 and its very hard and its very annoying that the computer player has pokemon of L20 and me L15 so is kinda impossible to defeat them Great vid btw :)
What's the point of levelling to 19 without going to 20? Does Lapras really need to be levelled up if you're only going to bother to do it once? Unevolved Pikachu when you lose nothing in the Cup from evolving it, and gain some definite amount of durability? Certainly there are better (higher Attack, higher Speed) Hyper Beam candidates than Clefable? Of course, given that this is Stadium and you lose Hyper Beam turns even on misses and kills, that move becomes a lot worse here.
Sky Attack is a very bad attack. In Pika Cup it's highly doubtful you'll even get to do any damage with it. Basically there are 2 moves that can make L15s relevant: Dragon Rage and Explosion (though Snorlax can get away with Selfdestruct). Thunder Wave could possibly do something to slow them down but since Pika Cup battles are so short, you might not even be able to successfully attrite them that way.
If you've never played, then how are you so familiar with just what everyone has? And again, why would you be making suggestions for improvements (except not really) without having played it?
Pika Cup doesn't lend itself well to anything but hard hits--a level advantage as high as 33% further exemplifies the way hard hits are simply good strategy in this cup. With Starmie's ability to cover so many types, especially with the goal of this video being "speedrun", why wouldn't I use that type coverage?
Whatever luck it is doesn't particularly matter...Exeggutor is down next turn anyway, and if it's not frozen then I think it just Egg Bombs me for not even close to enough damage. All in all, the freeze stands to gain about 6 seconds. Nothing more.
I can't beat pika cup on R2. A friend gave me pokemon blue and I just beated the sixht gym of the gameboy. I gave to my poliwag ice beam and surf but its not powerful, and I think you only get ice beam once in this game. I belive the only way of getting dragon rage before lv 20 its winning it at the game corner but its too hard. If only I could get more than one psichic, ice beam, tunderbolt or earthquake. You should give Substitute to Starmie / Dragonair / Arcanine / Alakazam in order to avoid Th Wave. Selfdestruct OR Rest on Snorlax, not Selfdestruct AND Rest... Reflect on Alakazam...

I think he may have only gotten clefable to lv 19 so he could also use the lv 16 lapras (Rather than having a 20 and two 15's. I Believe I have my Pika Cup Pokemon's Levels set at levels 16-18 to have stronger Pokemon while also staying under the 50 level add-up limit , I'm not sure about it, But thats what I think mine are at, Gotta fire up my old N64 and Gamepak one of these days.
Well my friend. It was 3 years ago I posted that comment and I havn't played pokémon stadium in some time now. But I do remember coming to the last guy and I had a slight chance of winning if only my brother (we played and tried to beat it together) would have picked confuse ray instead of some attacking move. I'm no fan of attacks with not 100% acc but you need that extra fire power and the evolved pokémon knowing them. Also hoping they are paralyzed on the spot and hit themselves etc.
