There's also a story reason for it. Your first chance encounter with Klara and Avery is from before you became champion, while frankly no one on the island is in the loop about the latest Gym Challenge because Mustard hogs the only TV in the dojo constantly.

Who else was just waiting for when it was revealed that you were now the champion and beat Leon. Like, that reveal didn’t truly happen I wanted to see the look on Klara and Avery’s face that they tried to tell the champion of the region they weren’t cut out to be at the dojo.

I just completed the third and final required battle with him yesterday. Thank goodness I had my newly evolved Ribombee with me, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to defeat him. I like him compared to Klara. He seems less hateful.
