I'd like to express my gratitude to the anonymous donor who digitized their old VHS recording of the official video from the Pokémon World Championships 2000 and provided me with the copy.
For those who don’t know, Darryn van Vuuren tragically took his own life on February 18th, 2021 after suffering a mental health crisis. Rest In Piece Legend. The first official Pokémon Champion.
went to look up daron just to see where he is now unfortunately he committed suicide in 2021 at the age of 37 is such a bummer he worked for the council in some form RIP first pokemon world champion
The fact that Chansey using Minimise allowed Van Vuuren to win the Championship might be the reason why the next World Tournament was only held in 2008. Nintendo & Game Freak seized on that 7-year break to fix their games and make them more skill-based and less luck-based. Pokémon Gold & Silver fixed many of the serious balance problems Red & Blue had. Ruby & Sapphire brought several new mechanics such as Abilities. Then, the 4th generation introduced the physical/special split, making Diamond & Pearl the first full-fledged versions when it comes to competitive viability. Back in 2000, competitive Pokémon was truly at its embryonic stage.
Yea, that's true! I know the result since 2001 and was thinking, that Chansey is a nurse Pokèmon and isn't very strong ....but it is up to how you use it!
Of course he was disapointed, he was on the road to be World Champion and never lost like this before... finally he was 4th and wasn't on the podium- must be hard for a 13 year old guy
