Pokemon Character Study: Wally 

Wally was that one rival I ways felt guilty beating

Even though Wally has a very small role as a rival, I have always found myself getting attached to him. He's my favorite rival.

Even though Wally has poor health but for a shy and timid Wally to risk his own life to pursue his dreams is sad but Wally and even though nobody believed in him and with no help he succeeds. The first version of him running away from his home and family then meeting him again at victory road sums up the best of Wally.

Wally and N are definitely two of my favorite rivals, both for their characters and how refreshing they were as rivals compared to previous rival archtypes.

Not really a fan of nice rivals but, I've always liked Wally.

I really have a lot of respect for Wally because of his amazing character development. He overcame an illness to fulfill his dream of becoming a strong Pokemon trainer. He is a grade A example of showing that you can succeed with anything as long as you put your heart into it.

Idk why but the seeing Wally just running through the team and just pushing them aside is pretty funny.

Manga Wally looks like a Shadow Triad member

Wally is a smol cinnamon roll. So good, so pure. He's like the little brother friend that is fun to mess with and must be protected at all costs. The fact that he was made to have an illness, contrary to popular belief, builds on his character not to make him weak but rather stronger and emphasize the fact that he has to face that struggle while on his journey (makes him more respectable). He's such a cutie; battling him in Victory Road was a huge achievement for him and character development. I was not only surprised in his newfound confidence but also how much he had grown. It was refreshing to see :) His theme music for the battle was so different (nice) as well; I was so proud. The background for the battle was also a good match; having flowers there was almost symbolic to his growth. He's the type of character that makes me cheer for him to get better. I honestly would be more happy for him than upset if he beat me in a battle one day haha. As for the manga, I haven't read the ones he appears in but it seems like his character is much more developed, as expected, and rather than having a less capable feeling, Wally proves himself resistant and determined much like his game counterpart but at a different level. The fact that he is the one to awaken Rayquaza is extremely respectable and it makes me proud of him for all that he's accomplished. Overall, I hope we get to see him again and that he makes an appearance in the anime. Maybe Generations?? Hope & Pray.

I absolutely love Wally, especially the manga version! Though it was a right kick in the gut when he wasnt made the Emerald character, something which pissed me off indefinitely... Seriously, the fact we had a fully developed rival with an original story, personality, a starter pokemon he fully evolved, pokedex, and a relevant team to gen 3, only to get replaced by some kid from Johto who stole his starter, had unoriginal development and a team that consisted of 2 gen 3 pokemon completely baffles me... Heck, even the colour schemes dont match! Wally is green like an emerald, while Emerald is mostly yellow and brown... WTH!!? I really hope they do something more with Wally to make him a pokedex holder, cause as it stands right now two hoenn pokedex holders are from the Johto region or have strong connections with it... That number should be zero ffs...

I've always respected Wally. He started off as an underdog and trained hard to have the skill and determination of a champ. His Respirator Suit from the manga looks cool! And though the male and female MC's of RSE have already been decided for years now, I have always felt that Wally could be the MC of Emerald (because of his green hair plus him deserving it).

Wally is my favorite rival. I know the Genwunners are gonna crucify me, and the "SILVER IS THE BEST RIVAL" guys are going to start a small militia, but I just LOVE Wally! And his theme... His theme is just amazing. (ORAS Theme)

Not sure about you guys but I think generation 8 needs to give us another dick rival. You know the kind of rival that constantly interrupts us and makes us want to get into a real fight with them like Blue and Silver

I loved Wally in ORAS. Even though I was around, I never owned any of the original gen three games. But it's nice to see that they poured in the extra work the second time around.

for some reason I could always catch ralts when feeling sad, so I'd make myself sad just to catch one, for some reason it always worked for me. even though there's no way it could really effect things

I think it's funny that there's a point where no one can find him, but no one says "Where's Wally?"

This is my favorite pokemon character ever. He's just like me: he's shy, he loves ralts, he wants to go on adventure but is not confident enough.

Wally is the cutest rival. Idk the fact that he’s nice to the player helps too. The other nice rivals feel like comic relief or like the brenden/May rival who are there like “Okee let’s check up on your Pokémon and how strong they are”

Wally is the kind of rival I like best. Someone who's weak that then becomes a whole lot stronger, not out of ego but out of confidence building.

Here's my opinion on Wally. He's fucking adorable~10/10 would glomp and cuddle.

Wally is probably my favourite character, he's cool in game and in the manga. I like how he starts out weak and builds into an amazing character, his battle music is also amazing.

in the Hoenn games his father asks “where’s Wally” and that’s very funny since there’s a book franchise called where Wally.

Maybe Max in the anime is a minor Wally reference, as he befriended (but not captured) a Ralts?

I feel that out of all the rivals, Wally is one of the Pokemon rivals that has the best character development. He starts out as a boy who’s insecure about himself but with each battle, he finds his stride and builds up confidence. He’s not meant to be cocky, aloof, or outright annoying af like other rivals but he’s got his own sort of strength that made me resonate with the character a lot when I played Sapphire (aka my first Pokémon title). That’s one of the reasons why I loved playing Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and found something more in this underrated generation.

Guys, I'm so sorry to say this but, Wally is dead. In our last battle I used the following Pokemon. Torcoal, wheezing, jumpluff, cotteny, mega gengat, and gyaridos. This was 8 months ago. I buried him in hoenn's victory road after torcoal used smokescreen! I just couldn't take it anymore so I'm saying it now. Sorry

Funny enough Wally always stood out to me Being a newer fan-heart gold and soul silver being the first games i played- I never remembered the rivals that well, how remembered them was silver being mean or Bianca being funny, but was about it, but I could remember wall better than I could remember the other rivals, he had a more clear personality to me so I cared more for him.

i like wally, when he battled me at victory road. i surprised that tiny ralts become a strong gardevoir and that battle was challenging to me..

Wally holds a really special place in my heart as does the Ruby and Sapphire games. For one, those games were the first pokemon games I owned, the others either belonging to my sisters or my parents while I watched over their shoulder. I remember what I first thought when I saw Wally, for one his actions and way of speaking always reminded me of myself as I could never build up confidence in anything. It helped that I had caught a ralts for my team before I met him on the previous route. His journey gave me happiness, I always worried about him whenever traveling. I didn't consider him my rival, that was saved for May, but I considered him a friend from the few interactions I had with him. I felt really bad when I beat him in front of the gym, though was happy to find out that he was out there training to get stronger. I never saw the end to his journey in ruby and sapphire, I actually didn't even go to victory road. After beating the eighth gym, I went back to do whatever I felt like. I was terrified of the elite four when I was younger. I never knew what came of Wally, I thought he did what I couldn't and defeated the elite four. I grew up, I became less like Wally and more confident in myself. I really was happy with my growth, but a bit sad now that I couldn't consider myself and Wally similar. When I did get Alpha Sapphire, I actually beat the game to victory road. It made me really happy to see Wally again, I had the same team I did when I first went through the game. It was a great battle, I really enjoyed seeing how strong he got, as it cemented the thought that both him and myself are very similar. Even though his journey was shorter then my own, it was the same. I felt pride that he had gotten so much stronger, and my dream that he defeated the elite four back in the originals where I couldn't wouldn't be to far out of reach from him. He may be the friendly rival that people have grown to dislike(or hate), but to me, he will always be more then that. He will always be my most dear friend and the only character I have ever related to on that level.

Seeing him in Sun Moon makes me so happy because he’s so tough to fight.

As my first basic experience with Gen 3 was Omega Ruby, I found Wally an nexpected surprise and he quickly became one of my favorite characters in all of Pokemon. There's just something about his development in ORAS that struck me as amazing and was much different than what I experienced in Diamond, White, and Y (The games I played before ORAS)

Ruby and Sapphire Wally was brave and had a lot of courage to take on a journey all on his own without much help. Omega Sapphire and Ruby Wally was also brave, and with the support of his family and friends, he made his journey. Manga Wally found many ways to concur his sickness and became a hero. These are all really awesome Wallys. I can't exactly pick my favorite.

Manga Wally is best Wally. But ORAS Wally comes at a really close second.

Did you know that in front of the gym when Wally challenges you, you cannot lose because ralts would rather always use growl or double team when you have your last pokemon out. At least in R/S/E.

Very interesting. I'd never snooped in Wally's house in the Gen Vi remakes, so I'd missed all that stuff. I don't see a difference in the models at 10:27, though. Unless you count the necklace.

I think Wally has a slight altered counterpart in the anime, that is Max. They both have some deep connections to Ralts.

Wally was a really cool rival to have as a kid struggling with asthma myself. We're both determined and don't get knocked back by challenges so easily :)

I think Ralts is a perfect signature Pokémon for Wally. Ralts starts off as a small, weak and timid looking Pokémon to later grow into Kirlia and ultimately become Gallade/Gardevoir, some of the strongest Pokémon in the Hoenn region. Both Ralts and Wally demonstrate that no matter how small and weak you start off to be, with courage and dedication you can ultimately become so much stronger

The way you describe the rivals is hilarious because in the manga the Gen 3 team are the only ones that hate each other.

You forgot to mention that Wally, the sick kid, owns a Gardevoir in Gen 3, a Pokémon that will protect its trainer at any cost.

Can I suggest a future character study for Steven or Wallace, champions of Hoenn? Do you remember your promised face reveal for April Fool's day (Friday)? In all honestly, I thought Wally was bland in Gen 3, but Gen 6 made me love him so much. Coming from someone who grew up with asthma, I can easily fit in this kids shoes. I am so alot like wally in many ways, I was shy and timid young in life, but after enduring obstacles on my long and perilous journey into High School, I've become so much more outgoing and upbeat with many people, even strangers, similar to his character development in generation 6. I love this character because I am a walking real life version of him essentially.

wally is such a baadass in gen 6. gallade and esspeccialy mega gallade fit him so much then gardevoir. and the change he is passing, from that shy kid with the ralts to that badass with mega gallade... you can even see this in the way he's throwing his pokeball.

I'd love a rival in Sun/Moon that was part of Team Skull. Like a real asshole rival who stole Pokemon and such. It would really make me want to defeat him.

theory: wally was supposed to be emerald but was scrapped due to having a starter awakening rayquaza having green hair

I know that the personalities are very different but Drew was asthetically based on Wally and was Mays rival in the anime. i also think him having a Roselia as his signiture pokemon was a reference to Wally having one in every incarnation.

One thing also is when you have the rematch in ORAS, all his Pokemon use competitive hold items, other than Gallade. Which I thought was pretty cool

The thing is, they're both Wally in the end, so we can assume that while we didn't get the information that he was interested in Pokémon before, we have it now, and I presume that it applies to the original Wally as well.

Wally in the first design looks like he is gentle but can easily kill someone without a second thought , oras Wally is way more misleading giving you the impression of "just walking through dont mind me"
