My favorite Pokemon is Chansey and as a kid I drew sooo many mock ups of a "Pokemon Pink" where you start with a Chansey. Then later around the time when DS came out I had so many ideas for a Pokemon Pink where you work in the Pokemon Center using the stylus to rub in Burn Heal, remove Poison barbs, etc. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the intention and what I want will never happen short of me learning to code and dodging Nintendo's Ninjas but dammit, one can dream.
Another reason why it's speculated that the starter Pokémon for Pokémon Pink was Clefairy is that Clefairy was originally going to be Ash's stater Pokémon in the anime before it was decided on Pikachu.

Actually, the most likely reason for them ditching the voice-acted cries was cartridge space. GameBoy cartridges have very little memory, so storing lots of (debatably) high-quality sound effects was simply not feasible for a complex and graphically rich game like Pokemon. It's the same reason many GameBoy games, including Pokemon, are mainly tile-based - all you need to store is a tile sheet and a map layout to make that work and the code is very compressed too. The cries you hear in-game were the best compromise between sonically interesting and logistically manageable they could manage at the time, unfortunately.
Actually, I think the plan was to always have 8 gyms. The second early sprite for the first gym leader.... Well, his pose is pretty much EXACTLY the same as Giovanni 's pose. It's possible this kid is a super early version of him. Obviously at this point. He wasn't planned to be an evil team leader. They likely decided on changing his design drastically later on to have a more impactful final gym leader. Since... let's be real. That was a cool twist.
It would be funny if the thing about giovanni remembering his childhood in pokemon origins is a reference to this guy and his flytype(or birdtype, no idea if this change would have been before or after the bird type became just a random string in the code)gym removed.

Fun fact: In the manga for Pokémon Red Blue and Yellow, when Yellow goes to Cinnabar Island, he encounters someone that looks like the beta design for Blaine, which asks him to go in their base that is inside the volcano, and that person reveals that they actually are Blaine. Blaine then reveals he accidentally burned his mustache while training.
In Pokemon Adventure they mixed both designs. I think that was cool, since Pokemon already did a mistake including both designs in anime, magazines and games as official for Blaine. He just missed his military outfit.
Jynx was the only one to not get a evolution in gen 4. Its the only one out of the 3 that cant use a evoilite which is a real shame. Jynx deserves better

I always saw Jynx as an "empty can" like a ghost, never as a black woman, the "eyes" and the "lips" were just there, and her outfit was cover her "body". That's why when she is defeated in Pokemon Stadium she just disappear leaving just the wig behind. Something similar happened with Vileplume, it's body was actually similar as Polteageist body, that is going out from the Petals. I think both were planned as ghost types, and that beta Ice monster was the Ice Mon planned as counterpart of Magmar and Electabuzz. They just simply mixed both at the end.

3:02 Another point for Team Clefairy: Allegedly Clafairy was planned to be Ash's Main Travel Companion to make the Anime more appealing to girls, but was changed because it was feared it whould turn boys off, so they settled on Pikachu who can be seen as equally cool as cute. I wonder what in either case would've happened to the Fairy Retype of the respective Evolution Line if Pink had existed. The girl vs boy thing is alleged. Japan views pink as a gender neutral color. Pikachu was chosen because a) by design a stylised mouse looks way cuter than a humanoid midget fairy and b) his bright yellow-based color palette made him stand out on any picture. It made perfect sense to make him the series mascot.
Weirdly enough, they ended up with a "Balloon" Pokemon much later on! Does this also explain why Red/Blue have the colour palette swap, as you had Red, Blue, Green and Pink?
The Masspro function could have been used as a method for generating Mews to give away at Pokemon events. It would be a pretty weird way to go about it, but that's the only sense I can make from it.
Maybe one method they were going to use was generate a Mew in your party with that NPC, and since it's in a PC Center, it's right there next to the trade link.
@@TetraBitGaming Maybe they thought to actually use the masspro function but realised they can just do it by programming Mew in-game for the event distribution and never completed fully working on the masspro function, and it got forgotten and left in the code.
I was thinking this function was probably intended for the same thing. Perhaps they had the function implemented where you got to set the name for the Mew so event attendees could have the option to name their Mew by talking to the Pokemon representative facilitating the trade. Because you can't rename your Pokemon in Gen 1, right? That makes a whole lot of sense to me. And since this comes from the source of Blue, perhaps this was added in as an after-thought by the devs for this type of interaction. Perhaps the devs compiled a slightly-modified version of the game with this active and the source code that got leaked includes this. I would be very interested in finding out if this function exists in the different retail versions of the Gen 1 games after disassembling them.
@@swstegall You can rename in gen 1 games, however like many if not all of the games, you can't rename a Pokémon you got from a trade which is most likely the way Mew was passed out for events.
I imagine that the whole anime cries thing went down EXACTLY like this: they were in the middle of recording the new cries, they started adding the cries into the game files, at around the 8th file or so they realized that they were taking up WAY too much memory/storage space, they tried to compress them to the same file size as the old cries as a potential solution, it sounded like THAT, and the moment the developers heard just how awful it was they just said “screw it, it’s not worth it” and immediately scrapped the idea after that 😂
11:18 The way that Mew was distributed at events was via an otherwise normal cartridge that would come loaded with Mews at the event. They could've activated this code whenever they needed to load up a cartridge with Mews and kept going and going until the cartridge was full of Mews, and then sent it out, perhaps keeping the code activated so that if the distributors ran out of Mews, they could just talk to this lady, fill up their PC Boxes and party with Mews, and then continue distributing them. It may appear to be a softlock, but maybe if you keep going until your entire party and PC Box is completely filled with Mews, it would stop giving you Mews after saying you have no room in your PC. Or perhaps in the consumer release of the game, the code is intentionally left slightly unfinished so that if it is activated somehow, it wouldn't work properly and would indeed softlock the game to prevent any potential imbalances that would be caused by such a bug. I'm not 100% on this, but this is what I think it could be used for, and, if so, the completion and activation of this code in the game could be used to tell real distribution cartridges from fake ones, which as of now cannot be done, as they are otherwise just regular carts filled with Mews. It's just a theory, though; I'm sorry if I'm wrong.

@@tristallyn Aww, thanks! c : That's a great idea to test it out, but sadly, you can't transfer from an actual Gen 1 cartridge to any games beyond Gen 2 via legitimate means. Those specific in-person Mew events from the 90s likely cannot be transferred over Pokébank because the original events were decades before the Virtual Console releases of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow; the VC versions have no way of interacting with the original cartridge-based versions outside of someone dumping the saves of both games and messing with the save data with PkHeX to transfer the Mews over to the VC version (which is completely unintended and will probably lead to the Mews being flagged as fake). That was a really great idea, though, you were thinking on the right track. And I would like to find out if they can go through, too, even if it wouldn't really prove or disprove anything if they can't go through. ^^
Also the Myu2 function makes sense, as Mewtwo is a clone of Mew and was created from DNA. It might've very well been similar to fossil mons, you'd somehow obtain Mew DNA, give it to someone, maybe or maybe not the fossil person, and it would be used to create Mewtwo.
I'm not saying it'd be exactly the same. I guess to simplify it it comes down to, give fossil person fossil, get fossil pokemon. Give cloning person DNA item, get clone
Clefairy was meant to be the main Pokémon but Pikachu took that spot instead. I heard they chose Jigglypuff for Smash because it has a similar shape to Kirby and would take less time to model.
6:24 that is Jnx’s early sprite because Jynx was a counterpart to electabuzz and Magmar in the Pokédex getting babies but later Jynx was excluded because of racist controversy.
The mew masspro function probably came from the event cartridges given to employees at stores holding events. The mews at these events supposedly came from the pc boxes, but maybe they would come from the woman at the centre. Unfortunately the gen one event cartridges have never surfaced as far as I know, so we can’t test this.
The Pokemon Pink version would've had Clefairy,since it was Supposed go be the franchise mascot until Game Freak decided to go with Pikachu instead. Also there was Never gonna be a 9th Gym leader. That Kid was the leader of the Veridian City Gym,which was originally gonna be tbe 1st Gym. Giovanni wasn't planned to be a gym leader at that point in development. So The Kid was replaced by Giovanni. I think the Kid was gonna be a flying-type leader,but I'm not sure.
11:45 You're missing out the point. Since this was leaked, it was probably for internal use only. Y'know, for generating new Mews for the special events on magazines and creating the save files inside the cartridges with the anti-tamper seal that they used on toy shops and stuff.
The "myumasspro" thing was probably intended for special staff-only versions of these games, so that gamefreak employees could hand out / trade away mews at lokal events.
Oh I think there's a good reason why there was a code for mass producing Mew, it was probably intended for distribution copies. Direct trade was how Nintendo gave out Mew as an event Pokemon in gen 1, so it would make sense that there are/were copies that had a code like that. It might have just been included the development stuff and since it wasn't ready for the public anyway, the code was kept in and then my guess is it was left in for copies of the game intended to distribute Mew to plays via trade at events.
Once when I loaded Pokemon Blue into a broken Super Nintendo, the title screen was scrambled but I could make out the words "pocket monsters" Glad I took a pic when it happened!
Tetra replied to my Twitter thread and helped me see that its actually code stored in the supergameboy! It has alternate text for the Japanese version of the gameboy cart.
Personally, I think why the “Nintendo Ninjas” have worked so hard to take down stuff is because the source code from the game itself was leaked, not because information from early development is involved. They don’t want people using the leaked code to get the game for free.

no, it's because the source code contains a lot of internal information, like full names of employees, along with phone numbers and email addresses. and also because the source code is their intellectual property so they want to protect that.
A possible explination for the Mewtwo fossil thing is maybe one idea was having the player be more active in the creation of Mewtwo using the fossil lab with some DNA from mew.
Megaburn could have been used to melt ice in the area one gets articuno, which may have been a really early conception, or there may have been old puzzles or something
it was probably going to be clefairy, it was gonna be the mascot before pikachu was chosen, so it'd only make sense. though nowadays it'd be pokemon brown since pikachu's rival is eevee now, but yellow and brown doesn't sound too marketable. (also i wouldn't be an epic rattata fan if i didn't mention koratta is rattata's japanese name)

7:50 That first gym leader looks like he could have been a kid version of Giovanni, since he's standing in a similar fashion, and it would probably make sense given that he's the Viridian City gym leader, and Viridian City cones before Pewter City/Brock. Brock's early sprite looks like Gohan, who is maybe the child of the previous Goku sprite? Goku could have been a Fighting Type gym leader, and Gohan/Brock would have been his son that was a younger Rock Type gym leader. And, I guess since we're on the topic of early gym leader sprites, Blaine is a military scientist, so that could have been him when he was a younger soldier before he grew old and became a scientist.
I feel like I’ve seen some of those building textures when people visit those void areas and the textures get all jumbled. You see like a small area of part of it.
I could see MegaFire being used to clear a path to Victory Road if the original set up had Viridian City first and Cinnabar as the final gym. Or even being used in the Mansion to make the holes to drop between floors.
if I had to guess, Solarbeam was the equivalent of Rock Smash, but with longer range, and Wildfire was Flash but it's timer depended on the environment it was used in. Wildfire would also function similar to Secret Power, except it's a fire type move.
I suspect that Mew mass production was for events where he was given away- utilizing that function to get Mews into their tradable inventory, but with the rom having been modified in some way as to not have the softlocking problem. Those Mews had to come from somewhere, and it almost certainly had to be something this practical to be reliable. Imagine if they made some more custom solution and it didn't work smoothly on the event day- there'd have been Rick & Morty Sauce-style riots.
I would have bought Pokémon Clefairy Version. Clefable is one of my favorite Pokémon for how cuddly it is and it’s ability to murder nearly everything. Especially now with Magic Guard + Life orb.
Since Mew was originally a joke, I think the mass pro function was the punchline. Devs would see it, test it, and laugh because despite getting infinite Mews, you can’t save and can never actually have one
Mmm. Clefairy is also a starter in the Pokémon Master Trainer board game, and a rare encounter in a "dungeon" whose only evolution can only be accessed by a stone, just like Pikachu. Neat!

I think it's well known that inns were a thing early on, and some think the Celadon hotel is a remnant, especially because it has an invisible PC in the same spot as Pokémon Centers.

There's actually a beta green version floating around the internet and it has all the scrapped mons and an area where you go to the *lost* city. Which is town 12 in this video. There is a gym there but not much else to do after that. Also the goku guy was actually an android you fought in silph co before fighting prof oak as a boss. Lot of other interesting things
Really the biggest thing for me has been seeing the origin of the Mew Truck. That thing's a legend. It's like getting new information about the L Is Real 2401 statue.
I always find it funny when I encounter hardcore Pokemon fans who actually recognize the cries of individual Pokemon. Like one time a friend of mine was talking about how this one cry sounded too sad and how he preferred the sound of this other one, meanwhile I'm like wtf are you talking about they all sound like a robot dying in a blender
