Why is everyone making collecting into strictly investing it takes no genius buy sealed and wait lol I don’t collect sealed I collect graded cards strictly vintage 10s and Japanese promos strictly in 10s I collect that because I like that but …. Collecting sealed =zero skill and so boring and who would want to buy a box for 100-120 and wait a couple of years to sell for 220-250 lol and when you want to trade they take your items at 80%

A lot of ppl don’t realize he’s mostly a Japanese collector that’s why he spend the first few minutes talking about every box is at its bottom he doesn’t really have any knowledge that most investor bros are talking about English sealed. And even then you can make an argument on why Japanese boxes are down, economic turmoil as seen by the yen dropping, and or because the English market was in a fad for it which is sort of ending atm. Only thing he said that I sort of agree is the volatility of singles/slabs. I do believe they are more “fad”/ seasonal than sealed and have a higher incline and decline in sporadic movements hence more speculative, but you can make pretty dam good guesses on what’s going to go up, like alt arts. Idk seems like someone in the hobby who is just to caught up in how it use to be and not how it is, to stubborn to adapt.

AMEN. Max out your annual 401k contributions. If you are a business owner, you create a safe harbor plan with profit sharing and fund your 401k even more each year. Max out your roth. Fund a liquid savings account. Invest the rest in real property, stocks, and collectibles. 🤙🏻

the only downside of investing in pokemon is that it isn't as liquid. you can't click a button and sell and get your money. It's hard to sell. Also you can't go to a bank for a loan and use your pokemon booster box as collateral like you can with stocks.

Exactly more effort to store and sell. More risk storing versus having your money in the digital cloud. But you reap greater rewards for that risk. Also selling generally has certain times where it’s better than others so it does kind of require you to pay attention to the market if you want maximum liquidity. Totally worth it if you love pokemon anyway in my opinion.

My biggest obstacle comparison is inventory and market movement tracking. My stock portfolio is simple to see what I bought, when and my percent change. Whereas my Pokemon investments, I have little clue on portfolio total value and my gains.

Just watched okjluv’s video and I have to say he’s really out of his depth. He’s still living in an era in his head where Pokémon wasn’t as optimized as it is now. Back in the day booster boxes did rise but a bit slowly than now and there was a time where Pokémon was dead there wasn’t much happening because there wasn’t much demand for pokemon tcg product. But I think there was a change maybe somewhere in the pokemon go timeline where it started to feel different things maybe began to feel more optimized regarding price and more people interested in the tcg due to pokemon go. Then we enter COVID era where people that were in the hobby started to experience major product shortages and we even saw booster boxes short printed due to demand. We saw so many new people in the hobby and many people also left after the hype died down but many did stay. But I think the Covid era optimized the sealed product and in general Pokémon product when it goes out of stock or when there’s fomo it made it more faster paced because of optimization with the help of the internet (TCGplayer,eBay ect)

@Danny-ne9ko How would I predict what price millions of people buy in at lol. And sure if you buy in at non optimal times you can not see as good of gains the same way as if you buy into stocks or real estate at non optimal times its the same. That's why I say kind of like a mutual fund where you don't think about it and just invest every 2 weeks or month with a 401k the safest way would be to buy 1 of every box or case at or under 100 and gold without worrying about the ups and downs.

Ya sorry I don't know how how others markets work. Here in the US pretty much every set drops to 80s and 80s USD on ebay after release so $100 was actually higher than I buy most of my boxes and like I said they can be found right on ebay with no special connections needed.

You have to pay taxes on your profits/gains, which means you’ll need to keep good records and find an accountant. You’re also assuming “cash only” deals and finding buyers for all your accumulated products. It’s still work and a headache. 401(K) is literally no thought/work and you pay no taxes with any capital gains. You don’t get taxed on the deduction going into your 401(K). After maxing your 401(K) and IRA, then you can mess around with Pokemon. It’s too risky to be a primary investment.

Easy solution. Don't invest in pokemon. I can only speak from my personal experience and what the data and numbers show but if it feels too risky or you do not want to structure a business to benefit you on the tax side of things then by all means disregard this video.

Does that make sense? I can deduct $1K from a check into a 401(K), but I would receive $700 if I didn’t. Then I use that $700 for Pokemon. I’m already down 30%. Add a company match on that. Until that 401(K) is maxed, it’s not worth it in my opinion.

I mean if you would have bought alt arts when I made the video 4 months ago you would be about 75% to 150% up right now or modern sealed boxes all of which have risen significantly. Like I always say as long as you are right 70% - 90% of the time you continue to make money when investing in anything 😁

Are those numbers going off of market value? Because sometimes you won’t get market value. Also Pokémon is dependent on a buyer unlike a stock where you can sell immediately at anytime. I’m not defending anyone I like pokemon and invest in it myself but I think when ppl say there’s better places to put your money I think they’re talking about there’s places to put your money with less factors compared to pokemon. Just what I take from this and not saying that’s you in this video but because pokemon investment holders/product holders are dependent on a buyer buying the product in the future they need to keep creating interest or appeal to Pokémon in order to sell their product in the future because even if someone had a box of team up they bought at msrp and go to sell it now a parent isn’t buying that box for their kid no matter how bad the kid wants it lol so Pokémon has to stay appealing to adults in order to sell that booster box for example. Just my opinion I watch your content regularly to get different views on things like I do with many other poketubers. No hate

Taxes are different for everyone especially if you have a properly structured business. Also, you get takes on non Roth 401k funds when they are taken out and pre taxed on Roth contributions so it all averages out pretty close.

I have never had issues in the 9 years I have been in the hobby and the numbers I gave were after fees and shipping so should be accurate to what you will make selling. Depending on how much you have depends on the time it takes to move it all but that's about it.

I think his point is that investors are scalping and raising prices for genuine collectors. why would you get into a hobby purely for investment?( cause money, greed, etc.) I get it, greed is good Ayan Rand, individualism etc. lol. it raises costs for people who actually like collecting and just love the hobby. This really gets to the heart of investing as a whole. Yeah investing is fun and addicting, but stock markets are full of scalpers and people just in it for money(providing no actual service to society), and that hurts the products and services as a whole. Look at Martin Skrelli raising the cost of HIV medication to 750 a pill because "supply and demand". He's just being a smart business man, and that is the heart of the problems in a modern capitalist society. That's my hot philosophical take 😂

Mainly I buy one etb per set, I like collecting boxes of single packs I don’t open for the pack artwork , and I have one booster box. I open sparingly , and and in it for the slow long build of my PC over time. But I stand by my statement that there are people in this hobby that have no love for the story, the art, the amazing Pokémon designs, etc. fortunately they tend to leave the hobby soon as a dip occurs. But they are always respawning 😂

I think the funds are probably a safer investment overall but I would put Pokémon investing at more or less the same risk as investing in single stocks, marginally higher risk with historically higher rewards!

The only thing that is wrong about this is the company match. You’re getting match 1-1 up to a certain percent. Find out what that percent is and invest what you’re able to as close to the match as possible. You mentioned you invested 8,000 and so dollars but with the company match that means you invested half of that amount and made 15,000. So in 10 years you turned 4,000 or so into 15,000. Almost a 400% gain. Other than that I believe that people should diversify their investments into assets that they understand and are comfortable with. If Pokémon is something you know enough about not to make a guess but an informed decision then by all means invest a portion of your money into that.

Right but you would have only invested $3600 in Booster Boxes and had over 20k. Rewatch the Vid. 1 of each box for all 3 eras is only $1200 an era and you would right now have more than a company match at the 12.4% average return for 10 years.

You also completely ignore the costs of holding stuff for 10 years compared to etfs. You also completely ignore supply and sales numbers and only look at charts like most investmentbros. It is not because you have a $500 box that you are going to be able to sell it now. We know how many stocks are out there we don t know how many investbros are holding boxes of X. I get it this is your business which is why you like most investbros and flat earthers etc are unwilling to change or accept fault because it threatens your business model. Again the word is speculate not investing.

I have bought and sold for 9 years in this hobby and never had a liquidity issue. Now is it as fast as clicking a button like a stock, NO. You just have to ask yourself are the much high gains worth it for a little time to sell at the end. For some it is, for yourself maybe not. No reason to get your panties in a bunch over it.

@@NostalgiaNomics It is not about YOU. The fact that YOU have done certain things does not means others can or will or have. The point is that you are promoting these things as investments to an audience that knows even less than you do and believes that because you sold a box at $500 they can too now and thus should buy more boxes to hold. My point again is this is speculation not investment. You should watch Reserved Investments and read some of the books he recommends...unless you do not care about changing because as you said and show, this is a business for you and anything that threatens your revenues is a no no.

if JLUV thinks booster box investment are unpredictable and crazy he probably hasnt had a lot of profits with traditional investments as well. It takes 5min of research to see that every booster box set has gone above the normal post release buying price of 90-100usd since its start

To play Devil's Advocate, the price increases in Pokemon have mostly boomed during the pandemic. I'd like to see the returns previous to the boom. I'm also interested to see how Scarlet and Violet is going to hold up long-term. Don't get me wrong, I still think Pokemon is going to outperform the traditional markets over a 30 year span, but I'm frankly too busy to dig up the numbers pre-pandemic to figure out how things were doing.

@@Chirs67 What I'm saying is the price hikes in Sword & Shield are a ripple effect of 2020. A lot of people are speculating the prices of SWSH are going to continue to climb because it re-introduced a lot of people into the hobby, or brought them in for the first time (like kids). It's the same speculation that happened during Gen 1. But Gen 1 took quite a while to reach that point that it did. Again, it can still outperform traditional markets, but I'm curious what the rates looked like before the boom. I have a suspicion when Scarlet & Violet rotates out, we're not going to see the same rates we're seeing in SWSH.

okJLUV is an example of a person in this space who can't accept that things are changing and things have changed. He is like a pokemon boomer. So go ahead listen to his advice but don't be mad when people 15+ years from now start cashing in and you are upset you listened to a guy who can't accept the reality. The pandemic changed a lot of things and no one could have predicted putting your money into shiny cardboard in the hopes of making it rich would become a thing but here we are. It's like the early crypto boom. Remember all the hate on crypto a few years ago? "It's all a scam!" and yet now they now have hedge funds for it! When things like these happen you either sit on the sidelines, act on the information and take the risk or be like a Pokemon boomer who is mad this is happening.
