Dark type preventing prankstered support moves that call other moves/did damage was actually relevant in a finals match in VGC 2017, where a Z-boosted nature power used by prankster whimsicott was outright nullified by the opponent switching to mandibuzz .(though they still won despite losing their z-move)
The toxic-poison type-accuracy-bypass is actually super nuanced. SadisticMystic found that as long the FIRST move a poison type uses in a turn is toxic, any move it uses in that turn bypasses accuracy. You can use instruct on a Nidoking for example to have it use toxic first in a turn, and then have Nidoking use its own move to guarantee a hit with Horn Drill.
Yeah in gen 1 you pokemon can't receive any status effect from an attack from the same type. Electric types didn't gain immunity to body slam paralysis until gen 6 when they became immune to all sources of the condition.
Terrain's interaction with Grounded and Ungrounded pokemon surprised me. I knew it mattered because of Rising Voltage and Grassy Terrain, but I didn't expect Psychic Terrain. I thought it prevented priority, but it rather shields you from priority, a small difference, but one that could have influence in a battle.
Two more things I could think of that weren't mentioned in the video: -Fire types are immune to the "sea of fire" effect, which occurs when FIre Pledge and Grass Pledge are used together -Pokemon of G-Max Wildfire's, Vine Lash's, Cannonade's and Volcalith's respective types are immune to their secondary effects Very good video though, learned something new aswell :)
Hey Portobello, I really liked having all these grouped together. I'll put this in a playlist for myself, so I can make more educated guesses in team building. Thank you. Also if you're up for it, bulky stall vs hyper offence, pros, cons, matchups. The sky is the limit. There is a spectrum that goes from hyper offence -> offence -> mixed -> bulky offence -> bulky stall (with a few that fall between, like hazard rotation stall. Example: Tinglu wihrlwind/fissure)
Teambuilding is so much my strength (save for one UUbers video that I made about a while back), but if you're looking for that kinda material I highly recommend PinkAcross
Well a check is a pokemon that can threaten an enemy pokemon with a ko, or beat it in a 1v1 but isn't necessarily always safe to switch into it or take a direct hit on switch in. A counter can consistently switch into a pokemon, take a hit while doing so, and threaten to ko it or beat it 1v1.
Another worthy mention is that certain abilities grant specific immunities and even some extra effects to work with said immunities. The ones immediately coming to mind for me would be Levitate, Waterabsorb, Volltabsorb, Earth Eater, Storm Drain and so on.
It's interesting to notice how these immunities evolved trough generations: many of these immunities were introduced in gen 6, while in gen1 and gen 2 status immunities worked in a completely different way: pokemon were immune to statuses inflicted by moves they share a type with. For instance: twineedle could have poisoned a grimer, thunderbolt could have paralyzed a rattata but not a pikachu while body slam could have done the opposite. Tri attack in gen 2 could burn a fire pokemon or freeze an ice one. There are still some way to bypass the status immunities of certain types: the ability corrosion allows you to poison steel and poison types. while you can have strange results by evolving a statused pokemon, like a frozen glaceon, a burned flareon and a poisoned scizor, steelix or dustox...
5:06 Wait a sec, but almost every Pokémon who learns the move is Ice-type. So the only Pokémon with diet Sheer Cold are Suicune, Kyogre and I guess Smeargle and Mew.
Fun facts: electric types could be paralyzed in gens 1-5, this was likely changed because of Thundurus-I spamming prankster Twave (Twave also was 100% accurate at the time), similarly, the Powder immunity change was also in gen 6 and likely because of Amoonguss spamming Spore and Rage Powder (Rage Powder was also a Follow Me clone since Overcoat didn't ignore powder and there was no safety goggles).
Dark being immune to prankster is weird to me. Because it isn't being immune to a specific condition or hazard, it is basically being immune to an entire pokemon. IMO dark should be immune to moves like fake out, sucker punch, taunt, torment, and other move locking moves.
I think the prankster thing was a reaction to how powerful the ability was after its performance in Gen 6, alongside the other nerfs to mechanics like confusion and paralysis
@@RegrowRed by anyway I mean that every rock type damage that includes stealth rock so rock type damage has immunity but rock type attack in general doesn't have one
@@Portobello-Mushroom Also, Poison and Bug were weak to each other. I get why they made Poison resist Bug in Gen 2, but why not still make Bug weak to Poison?
Trapping Ability mons are immune to trapping Ability mons. Dugtrio can swap out on shadow tag for example. Intended for stalemate/pseudo-softlock prevention
This actually only applies to shadow tag mons; arena trap users can get trapped by arena trap or shadow tag. Tracing arena trap to countertrap Dugtrio is a common strat in gen 3 OU
They need to separate the types of paralysis again . Electric not para by glare and body slam is just lazy development, especially since you could para electrics up until like gen 5.
I like how pokemon always tries to make sense, despite being a game where a tree is considered a dragon. Fire beats ice beacuse ofcourse Psychic is weak to ghost, dark and bug, three common fears Ghost can't be trapped beacuse it's a f*cking ghost Water is weak to Electric beacuse it conducts electricity Steel resists Electric beacuse it conducts electricity, and beacuse pokemon it is the best type *It all makes so much sense* :)
@@nightcollapse Honestly snow has worked out much better for the ice types, the defense boost gives them more opportunities to set up whereas playing the long chip game with hail doesn't suit a type with a weak defensive profile
@@nightcollapse I thought so too initially, but Hail was never great. The chip damage is okay, but also hurts most of your own team. Unless you wish to include multiple Ice-types on your team. Snow and Aurora veil were massive buffs to Ice-types.
@@alfialfian2097 that makes sense but why are normal types immune? I assume that its because normal people dont believe in ghosts, therefore theyre immune, but are skillful fighters any different?
@@Naru_cissu normal refer to wild animals. Normal birds, cats, rabbit, etc. normal animal living on the wild, they don't fear ghost nor they believe in them. Only humans believe in ghosts
Grass types are immune to powder moves in general. Saying they're immune to Powder is true, but inaccurate, because Powder is only one of several powder moves.
When I said powder I did mean powder moves in general, hence the footage of Sinitcha being unaffected by Spore, Stun Spore, and Magic Powder. Sorry if I was unclear on that!
I’m assuming you’re asking if a prankster Pokémon uses trick room when a dark type is present on field does that prevent the move. The answer is no since the move is not directed at the opponent but yourself. The same applies for stat boosting moves. A prankster sableye using calm mind will still successfully use the move first, even if the opponent has a dark type due the move not being directed at the opponent.
They should have kept hail and given it snow's stat boost. Instead they just made one of the worst types even worse. Removing pursuit while ghost can't be trapped is definitely an oversight, GF just doesn't care anymore if a detail that big is going over their head.
@@cuttlefish6839 I said double up, give hail the defense boost. I don't do any sort of battling in Gen 9 and probably never will, but there was nothing wrong with the chip damage, Ice just needs a lot more help than a defense boost. They've been trying to make defensive ice types work for almost thirty years and they haven't made any progress.
@@TheOwneroftheIC Hail's chip damage does damage to your own team as well. Unless you wish to have multiple Ice-types. Snow and Aurora veil were massive buffs to Ice-types. Alolan Ninetales is a great example. I know it's counter-intuitive, and my initial reaction was the same. Just don't talk about it as if you know for certain.
From a linguist standpoint, he talks fast and it doesn't sound like he leaves an incredibly large chamber for his words to reverberate in his mouth, making his words sound "scrunched together"
U need to speak more clearly,l by improving your diction, it's really bad to follow even though I use to watch pokemon video in English a lot... Interesting video by the way
You can still hit dark types with status moves if you have prankster IF you are encored into a status move but selected a non status move. Like if you went to attack at normal priority but then got encored into twave, you would use twave normally since you weren't queued to use prankster priority and dark type only blocks the priority
My question is how you would have clicked a status move in the previous turn to get encored into in the first place if you're up against a dark type The only way I can think of is happening if you had a prankster pokemon use a status move against a pokemon using a pivot move, and after (but during the same turn) that the status move is used they end pivot into a faster dark type and use encore?
@@cultofmelturn 1: klefki uses t-wave, player 2 switches into sableye nullifying the t-wave Turn 2: klefki tries to use dazzling gleam but sableye uses encore and klefki is forced to use t-wave Result: sableye gets paralysed
A video on abilities that provides special immunities would be interesting too. Levitate is an obvious example, but there's stuff like soundproof, wind rider, armour tail, good as gold, and etc. Also probably lesser, but some notes about abilities that lets mon bypass immunities could be interesting too.
Nice. I think flying types could use roost in a terrain to get the effects or activate seeds. Imagine Talonflame at low health. Enemy uses a priority move, but you use roost. Since you are flying type, your priority should activate thanks to gale wings, letting you recover, and, since you are now grounded, priority moves against talon flame should be nullified. That would be wicked, no matter how unlikely it is to happen. Also, why does sheer cold has a 20% Acc if you're not an ice type, yet it shows a 30% Acc. That's bound to confuse people
I would love to see talonflame do such thing but gale wings got nerfed to not work like that the same generation terrains became popular :(. On another hand flying types can activate seeds like any other so I guess talonflame could use acrobatics at 110 BP without popping its ability.
@@Portobello-Mushroom that's pretty cool. Fly and other similar moves are rare in competitive battles, at least the ones I play on showdown so I just didn't know about it until I saw this video.
I feel like that’s an unnecessary nerf, because semi-invuln moves are bad to begin with (too easily exploited). But who knows what’s going through GF’s mind.
@@ThisIsntARU-vidr that's just a consequence of how they have always worked - they make the accuracy check fail (the pokemon you tried to hit is now out of your range), which intentionally interacts with later moves like Lock-On that bypass the accuracy check. The way that also applies to Toxic used by a Poison type is an unintended consequence of that combination.
Just wish they could explain this stuff in game with a proper guide or at least a tutorial Since their pushing vgc and it’s getting popular I hope they do stuff like this to explain these kinds of scenario
I wish some types had poison types utility. Like the way poison types removes toxic spikes. Rock types should remove stealth rocks. Also a fire type using will o wisp shouldn’t miss. Not going to mention Thunder wave because prankster thunderus is the sole reason thunder waves accuracy got nerfed😂
IMO will o Wisp part should be a never miss to ghost types. sure it's a fire-type move but in general it's mainly a ghostly fire. ghostly fire should be more controllable with ghost types don't you think? plus EVERY ghost types can learn will o wisp EVEN jellicent can learn it too, despite being a water type.
they need to make an ice-type status if they ever used legend arecus frost burn status. Imagine freeze ray or freeze tag as an ice-type status. ice types are missing out on the status moves. we got thunder waves, will o wisp, toxic, a lot of sleep moves like hypnosis and yawn, we got infatuated and confusion. Ice types are the only ones that's missing out. but I get it freeze is super over power. but they could easily make freeze two turn thraw out like 2 turn sleep. but I think they should use legend arecus frost burn instead
Is no one going to point out how messed up the type chart is at the beginning of the video? Rock immune to Fire? Normal & Grass resists Fairy? What kind of AU Pokemon type match up nonsense is that?
Something jank but funny is that, Ice type moves that can freeze, also do so to fire types with exception to those who have Magma Armor, which are limited to like 2 Pokémon. Macargo and Camerupt... neither of which would normally see play against ice types let alone most fights in competitive. I mention it because once frozen in gen 1, there is literally nothing you can do to escape without using an ice heal or being hit with a fire move that could burn. Meaning Fire Spin does not affect the frozen status... which you would think thaw them out immediately. But no. They are simultaneously frozen and burning from the outside. Which makes Gen 2 even funnier when you can: Freeze an Ice Type through Tri-Attack and Poison a Steel Type through Twinneedle. HOWEVER. Something that remains true to this day is that, the Freezing secondary effect does not work when the sun is up BUT IT DOES NOT thaw out the Pokémon any faster or immediately. You'd think it would at least double the chance of thawing out or speed up the process but it does not. Pokémon is fun.
New subscribwr here. Loved the video! Despite consuming a lot of pokemon content, i still learned some things :) Heres to your eventual well-deserved $10/year ❤
Nope, they can still be trapped like anything else. There's actually strats in gen 3 where trace users switch in on Dug, trace Arena Trap, and then trap it
I found this channel not through my love of pokemon but because i was cooking portabello burgers and the youtube spies overheard. Loving the content though
Great video! I didn't know that toxic not checking accuracy when used by a poison type pokemon ment it could hit a pokemon in a semi invulnerable state. Cool information.
That is not true. Dark types are only immune to taunt if it used by a prankster mon. As for an ability that makes the user immune to taunt, that would be oblivious, not unaware.
You forgot that Ghost-type has a special interaction with the move Curse. And type-changing moves. These aren't immunities, but they bore mentioning given the expanded scope of the video.
