My only problem with this match is just what onlookers thought, or people who arent familiar with pokemon thought. It was all SEE you can win with your favorites, and while I imagine Sejun enjoys Pachi Idt it is in no way his favorite, what people dont see or understand is the tool kit pachi had. Iirc pachi was bulky enough to withstand one EQ, obviously bulky enough to take those big special attacks as was showcased, he then had, Nuzzle, superfang protect mad the best part follow me. And and it also contained volt absorb for protection to Gyra and Talon whenever follow me was used. It was a super unique pick sure but it wasnt a CRAZY pick.

This is such a neat idea for a series of wideos. Your comment section/twitch chat/discord has a lot of people new to competitive, highlighting some of the classic VGC games could be a really enlightening experience - for both new and old players! My most nostalgic moment watching VGC is, ofc, Aaron shouting ‘HE GOES FOR THE SWORDS DANCE’. Great VGC moments all round :)

Would love to see you do more of these videos, it's really cool to hear you break down the history of VGC like this. I've been interested in VGC for quite a while, but with only being a spectator, it doesn't really give you an opportunity to learn the people all that well. I'd love to see you do this for other defining matches, or matches that were significant to you, even! It's easy to preserve stats, but it's not at easy to preserve ... people, so I feel like this has the potential to become a series that could make VGC history more digestible for outsiders. Again, would love to see more!

I love these kinds of videos, thanks Wolfey, very interesting. The underlying reasoning behind the choices made is the most interesting to me, like why they use which moves when on what targets. As an amateur hearing these thoughts help improve my gameplay a lot. Also the 'bulky' Gardevoir tech is so cool, thanks for putting a highlight on that.

remarkebly about these games, garchomp was intimidated almost the entire time (but did most of the damage). sejun just learned to play this team that way, pretty amazing.

Really enjoyed this, it could have almost been a segment in your Academy. Particularly the fact that mainstream Pokémon tournaments don't really have the in-depth post match analysis/replay highlights during streams like major sports (and probably to fit in more rounds which makes sense).

I love your input on this and would love to hear deep dives on more finals. That little bit of bulk investment to survive certain hits makes all the difference. That's something I didnt understand back then. I recall the pokemon community on twitter and tumblr were talking about Sajuns team pre Semi final. After everyone dealing with mega Khan in singles many such as myself were excited to tune in to vgc semi final for the first time. Because of this hint of some variation in competetive. So it makes sense why the crowd were already so hyped in the final to see Pachirisu turn up and do work.

@31:02 Jeudy's Lucario has 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe Jolly Nature while Sejun's Gardevoir has 4 HP / 44 Def / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 204 Spe Timid Nature 68.8% chance to OHKO That match could have gone either way.

yeah this was fantastic, I love your take on it and I love your analysis of other people's strategies, this and the kingler video were awesome for that reason. having it explained really makes you appreciate how ALL of sejun's team building was his strong point, and it was less pachi and more how he used it. I guarantee tons of people had no idea pachirisu was a known piece at the time and from someone who knew barely anything about competitive at the time, the main reason I remember that everyone was so shocked by pachirisu is because I've never met a casual player who didn't think pachi was anything more than the ugliest pikachu clone to date (back then) in a game that already had a one in a million actually really cool electric type option

While Sejun's victory was great, I didn't like how it gave the impression that you should always use your favorites to win. That's not even the reason Sejun used Pachirisu in the first place
