It was Poland who ended an eight year Hungarian reign in the Olympic Football tournament at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Hungary were Olympic gold medalists at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics and then retained the gold four years later at the 1968 Mexico Olympics with a 4-1 win over Bulgaria. But the Hungarians hopes of a hattrick of gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics were dashed by Poland 2-1 in the final. And the same Polish team the following year in the World Cup qualifier would end England's hopes of making it the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany.They(Poland) would finish a creditable third in the 1974 World Cup finals.
