Spitz sarcastically told a Russian coach his mustache cut the water out of his way so he could swim through faster. Next Olympics, the entire Russian team had grown mustaches

couldnt agree more @snaking - this is brilliant. BBC commentary would be even better, be that summer or winter games. I can still hear the great Ron Pickering calling home Franz Klammer at Innsbruck 76 in the mens downhill

@@eyeswideshot7347 No jammers, no raised foot block at the back of the starting block to do a split leg racing start, no carbon compression material for his swim trunks, no silicon swim cap (no goggles of course, certainly no padded goggles as used today). No real drug cheats in swimming in those days (well unless you were East German etc.) Certainly no body suits or leggings. No wearing of "double" swim trunks....and so on. No temporary competition pools...yada yada.

fun fact : 99.9% of olympic greats do not have their children repeating the success in the same sport. This itself is a topic of scientific exploration. Why the 'champion dna' is not passed to their kids?

Ironically, Spitz finished dead last four years earlier in Mexico City. That was pretty much set up what was to come four years later in Munich when he won his seven golds.
