Word of advice... everytime he walks up to a new area with you, train him to sit and stay until you open the gate and go in first... especially as he gets bigger, and when you're going in to put the flock to bed, you dont want him to get used to running inside before you.

No, I do not own any cats at the moment. Even though my mother owns a dog. And I've grown up in a family which always had both dogs and cats. I like dogs however I prefer cats because I do not consider dogs as hygienic and clean as cats are. I would never keep a dog indoors. Also I wouldn't keep a dog while living in the city because I don't think it has any purpose. The only circumstance I'd get a dog is if I had a farm or if I were a hunter or shepherd or something - if the dog actually had a purpose. Other than that, a dog isn't necessary to me. However I'd really like to get a cat but I am not able to, at the moment. Hopefully in the future.

@@cHr0mChIk I agree. Dogs are...well, kinda gross. I have never seen any other animal that loves to eat their own shit as much as dogs do. Building on what others have said about only saying a command once... For training Toby, first thing to do is find out what sort of drive he has. Is he best motivated by treats or toys? Then learn which specific treat or toy is his favorite. Only give him that specific treat or toy during training time and only after he has acted appropriately to your command. He will learn to associate that thing (reward) with appropriately responding to your commands. Be sure not to give him the treat or toy outside of training time! If he's having trouble with the "first time" thing, help him out by leading him to do the command with the treat. For instance if using food, put the food in your closed hand and let him smell it. If you're trying to get him to lay down, be sure he's in a sitting position then issue the command once and lead your hand to the ground as his nose and body follow. Once he's laying down open your hand. In addition to his reward, be sure to praise him after each successful command. He'll begin to associate your praise with doing something good. After a while, you can stretch it out by only giving his reward after two commands, then three. Eventually, you'll be able to phase out the rewards until the end of your training session. I have experience in "working line" dog training and this method has worked extremely well for me. :)

Toby is doing GREAT! Try limiting your words. Such as Toby sit/Toby down. A great command that our dog trainer taught to us was “leave it”. In order to pass the class, she put a piece of steak on the floor and our dogs had to walk unleashed around it and not touch it every time they went near it - we used the word “leave it” that we had been practicing for the month. The dog who finally stole the steak was the teachers dog! LOL.
@annastevens788

Kathy Taylor seconding leave it as a command instead of no. That way he knows exactly what you want from him when it comes to stuff you want ignored, like the duck food :)
@lavendercottageflowerfarm3281

Kathy Taylor ”leave it” is an arbitrary comment that has little meaning. I don't want to babysit a dog for 15 years. Instead teach him to be a thinking dog and reinforce the behavior you want and ignore what you don't. Hell figure it out.

NO plays a huge role as well! YES, do that, is a completely different message from, No, not that! One does not negate the other. It takes BOTH to teach a dog. BUT, name and no, should never be linked. Name reserved for praise, until the dog is trained. Once trained and matured, then "Tobby no" is fine.

So what you're calling the "traditional LGD work" is from Raymond Coppinger, who lived his whole life in Massachusetts, and essentially ignored how these dogs were used in the Old World. In the Old World, the shepherds lived out on the range with their sheep and dogs. In the Anglo-American tradition, we turned sheep loose on the range and bitched whenever predators took them. That's because Great Britain and Ireland lost their large predators, and there is no tradition on those islands of using LGDs. What Coppinger did was to encourage people to keep large, often quite protective dogs in ways that made them hard to handle or groom or take to the vet. So modern LGD people have largely rejected his methods and do handle their dogs and socialize them to people, but of course, you can find some people who do this the Coppinger way. But it's not the best for the dogs, and it ignores the human connection that was so real to why these dogs worked so well in the Old World.
@carlrest6553
@carlrest6553 4 года назад
Scottie Westfall Exactly. Finally someone who knows. LGDs have to bond to their families as well. They also work better when there are two or more. Great Pyrenees, Maremma's, Akbas etc. - they are all the same. They need constant interactions with their families.

You'll have to get some great playtime videos with him when he's not on duty. What an awesome dog! When it gets really cold, he might need a heater to keep his house from getting too cold, or perhapsbring him inside... He's one adorable puppy & those kisses at around 15 minutes show he loves you, it's clear you love him too. He's a great match for you! Just be sure you keep thinking ahead of what you want him to do and not to do! For instance... I know a couple of people who have big dogs who thought it was cute for them to be lap dogs, until they reached around 40-50lbs., then their dogs want to still be lap dogs, which CLEARLY confuses their dogs... later a 100+lbs "lap dog" they found, is a terrible idea! You seem to get that, but think about him sitting and stopping with you when you enter the pens, etc. Good on you. BEAUTIFUL puppy!

Good job with socializing him and getting him use to his environment and boundaries. But you really need a well out by the animals, you won’t be young and strong forever and farm sitters won’t be happy to haul. If you can’t get a well you can at least start a line from the house tO the animals. Then an electric heater and thermal cube that turns on at 45° (Home Depot) and your life will be so much easier and you will have time to grow your farm without more work.

For what you have now with the common duck and for future needs, Build a larger shed about 20 to 25 feet away from the pond you made. A shed that can hold up to 50 more ducks. with it near the pond you wont need to keep filling up their water, just break up the ice in the winter. Of course you would need to expand the fence you have around the shed and pond but it think It'll be worth it. Us e the shed you have them in now for the chickens

The only difficult thing is making sure their nutrition is right, id say a raw diet would most likely work better when he knows Tobys mannerisms a bit better and can tell if he’s sluggish or anything else

Yes, it very difficult. The research is extensive. I tried several cold case raw foods too and they were rejected by my animals. We just add enzymes and give kefir and yogurt once in a while to help digestion. Seams to be working for us. Plus the 4Health kibble from tractor supply.

I don't understand why someone would dislike these kind of videos. You don't like farming then don't watch. Don't dislike just because.

my friend, for your first time i must say that everything is going as smooth as it can be, toby helps in that department too with his relative calmness, but man, i wonder if having another 1 or 2 puppies would be more beneficial, since that's how the maremma-abruzzese sheepdog is commonly used. I understand the limitations of the space the farm can provide, i mean, just wouldn't make sense to have 5 dogs only to guard a small area, anyway, all good luck for you!! Get him a friend, preferably also another maremma, but it is up to you. You can do it ;)

Aww! Try teaching him to wait at gateways until you give him permission to enter or exit. If you're going into the duck area, have him wait and go in before him. This teaches him to respect you as alpha, because you run the show, not him! Starting when they're young is easier than waiting till they're bigger, barging into places before waiting for your say so. He is doing really good with off-leash tho! I can't wait to see him bigger! Edit: haha I see I wasn't the only one thinking that. You've got a lot of good help here for you when you need it!

You ought to get him another dog friend. You’re his whole world and he clearly loves you, but I think he’d be better off with a dog brother.

Toby is the cutest little ball of fluff! You can see how much he has already bonded with you & is so eager to please. I think training will go smoothly as he is picking up commands easily. He is smart. Now you have a companion to help you with your chores. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️😁
