In this video I am telling you how to save money on a common polaris part called the Back Up Valve. If you have a polaris 180, 280 ,380, or 480 this part will eventually stop working and here is what to do in that case.

Hello sir, how can I get the back up valve open to either repair or replace the gear box? Mine seems to be glued shut even though I know it’s not. Thank you

The best way to open a backup valve that is really hard to open is to use a vice or something similar to hold it while using a pipe wrench or a large wrench to unscrew it. If there is already a split in the back up valve you could use a flat head screwdriver and a hammer to split the side and then pull off the shell.

First, I'm new to pool ownership. While I don't see a crack in the shell and the gearbox seems to be working with one caveat. When the valve process 'cycles', I still see water trickling out of the valve. It's not gushing or squirting out, but it's definitely flowing. I want to ensure that this is abnormal before I purchase any replacement parts. THANKS for your time and consideration.

There is a small oring that could be bad right at the jet where the water comes out that I would check, you will need to open it up and take the gearbox out to check it. When the gearbox is bad it might not be shutting off fully which is common too.

If you have a vice that you can put the back valve on it will make it a lot easier to take apart.

Mine is cracked in that very spot and constantly squirts water too! Is the crack making it squirt water 24/7?

You need to replace it with a new shell. A crack in the back up valve will take the pressure that needs to be going to the cleaner and will cause the Polaris not to work properly.

@@ClearlySeen Thank you! That answered a thousand questions dude! I was at leslies pool supply with it just the other day replacing the union screw ring that holds it all together and noticed the crack. I asked the pool guy about it and he never said a thing about it.

How do you open the shell of the old one?

If it doesn’t come unscrewed you can use a hammer and screwdriver to open it around the cracked part. A vice will work if you have one. I just opened one that was on there good with a rubber strap that is used for taking oil filters off.

The back up valve shell has a threaded ring on it that needs to be unscrewed if it’s not coming loose you may want to try a pipe wrench. Sometimes I have to use a flat head screwdriver and a hammer to crack it open to pull the gearbox out. Hope that is helpful.

SO I have one G52 that failed after 12 months and I have tried to open the original and 2 other replacements without success - Glued ? 280 Polaris probably 10 yrs old. Last 2 Replaced by my pool guy at around double the price he probably paid for an Amazon knock off from China?. Each lasted 12 months if that. A Polaris OEM G52 part costs $96.99 from an approved dealer as of tonight . I didn't have to mess with the original for 7 years. I have also bought the entire refurbishment kit 2 x from Amazon for the cleaner. Bottom line you get what you pay for. SO I have one new kit left to replace and refurbish the 280, I have had to repair broken plastic due to Chorine degradation with special glues. Bottom line is as a pool owner for 8 years , like a car, its time expires and smart money is a new cleaner. I yearn for a Good mech savvy pool guy like you but all I have is a $10/month guy for cleaning and nothing more. Tell me if you have a guru near Katy TX like Clearly Seen.

Yeah those back up valves can be tough to open but it's definitely worth just replacing the shell to avoid the high cost. There is a link in the description of you haven't found it.

What happens when the backup valve constantly is squirting water from it when its supposed to be cycling. The Polaris wheels wont move at all and the booster pump is fine. It seems that their are two places in the hose where there is a ball bearing swivel, there's water leaking out of there also. I figured thats where it was losing pressure. I dont see any description on this page that tells where to get these parts cheaper

When water is squirting out of the backup valve and it does not stop after the normal cycle time then you will need the gearbox replaced. I have a link in the description of the video for the gearbox. As to the swivel it’s common that they will eventually start to leak. Any leak on the swivel will take away from the pressure to the cleaner so they will need to be replaced with a new one. Hope that helps!

@@ClearlySeen Would that stop the wheels from moving almost completely? There is also the chain tensioner kit. The stem of it seems to pull out of the hole its in rather easy and I dont know what holds it in. When it moves, the chain isnt in perfect line. And Im not talking about the tensioner itself moving, its like a little tit that sits in a round small hole

I would make sure that the wheels move freely that the chain is not kinked up but yes if the back up valve continues to release water through the jet and does not stop it will cause the polaris not to move because there is not enough pressure going to the cleaner when it’s on the backup valve cycle. To swap out the gearbox is the fix.

@@ClearlySeen How about the chain tensioner, what holds that in place so that it doesnt pop out and make the check not to be aligned. This is for my mothers pool and I know pool supply houses have ripped her off in the past. That chain tensioner pops into a hole, should it be able to move out easily

I have ran into problems with Polaris 3900 sports where the chain does not have a guard or it’s not on right and when it does not the chain will jump off of the track and it will require opening it up to reset it.
