Bearing Press Kit (Recommended) on Amazon - amzn.to/2pyXHu5
This video is part 2 of how to replace a rear wheel bearing on a Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O. This video demonstrates one way of installing the rear axle bearing without using a press. If you're following this video to replace your wheel bearing, take your time and be sure to use caution when installing the new bearing. These repair instructions will be the same or similar to many other ATVs and UTVs. Please keep in mind that my videos are shade tree mechanic style and a dealership repair may involve other steps and torque specifications. The four-wheeler in this video was a 2003 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O. I'll be posting a video on how to replace the front wheel bearings on this same four-wheeler soon.

A tip For anyone doing bearings, put them in your freezer for 20 minutes just before installation. It will literally fall in.

Nice video Mark but I have to tell you a much easier method: Put the aluminum housing in the oven at 400F for 15 mins and put the bearing in a plastic bag and into the freezer. Then that puppy DROPS into the housing with gravity alone !! You'll here a pleasing *dink* sound as it hits the shoulder! Try it. I did one yesterday :)

This is very true. I did that method when installing the pinion bearing for my F150 diff rebuild.

I think you forgot to torque the axle nut to its specification. Also recommend the housing being heated and bearing being cooled in freezer. Do not re-use your cotter pins as they can fail. And, I can't stress enough the use of anti-cease and other water resistant greases on all components susceptible to water intrusion.

Great instructions one thing though you should have greased the new bearing they are notorious of having very little grease in them form the factory

You are right and that's why I always get a EPI EZ GREASER for all my Sportsman XP 1000, Grizzy and Kodiak 700.

Thanks a lot for the video, i just did mine today and your vid helped a lot....My snap ring pliers were all too small so I ground the tips of an old pair of needle nose pliers and they worked just fine If you heat the casting to remove the bearing and replace the new one it really helps a ton, don't overdo it, the aluminum expands really fast...I'm estimating maybe 500 degrees(f)

Great videos! Thank you for taking the time to do it. I just purchased an 04 Sportman 500 and the right rear bearing is noisy. The previous owner claimed he had done the left side but not the right (should do them in pairs, I agree with you). Now you just need to make a video about how to fix the "HOT" issue that seems to plague these machines. By the way, great camera as well - GoPro?

This method is fine...... but if you plan on doing this much in the future then go to harbor freight and buy the smallest bearing press they sell. I actually bought the 20 ton one for around $130 but they sell one two sizes below this for maybe $45 and it will do the job just as good. I did not know when I bought mine that they sold a small one or I would have got it instead. I have done 8 bearings so far and glad I have the press. Not only is it good for putting the bearings in but also removing them.

nice job ....but.... you should have greased the bearing before final assembly ...it will make them last much longer.....factory dont put much grease in them, so you need to do it...well i do...lol

Other videos that I have seen they are using a grease gun and packing the bearings with grease before the put it back together???
@lukecannone9424
@lukecannone9424 4 года назад
Hey Mark. I’ve watched other videos where they use a grease packer in the bearing. Is this necessary on new bearing? Or is it just for cleaning out old ones? Thanks!

TIP: Put bearing in freezer for about 1/2 hour and warm the hub in oven on low heat for about 15 minutes... bearing should pretty much drop in.

Do you grease the bearings or no?
@Peter-gi3re
@Peter-gi3re 3 года назад
There is another handy little tool you can buy that inserts into the bearings and has a grease nipple. It injects the grease in through the center of the bearings. Sorry I don’t have a link to post but if you do a RU-vid or Amazon search you will find it
