Last I remember there are small round screened vents ,, maybe 1" or 1 1/4" .normally used under windows. A small air flow will help remove any moister trapped in void.

Nice👍moving fast now.. coming together. If you really had future plans of wire, cool thought would be to run 3/4 electrical pvc pipe through the truss to each end so all you had to do is pull down soffit ends and pull the wire.

Its probably a bit too late to do it now (but you could always keep this on your to do if the opportunity arises list) but given your problem with insects (and one of my best friends lives in florida, she is constantly waging a war on insects colonizing her house) if you ever reopen any of those spaces, they make a safe additive for paints that if you mix it in and paint a surface, it will basically kill insects who walk on it. You could paint the insides of those cavities if you ever open any of them up. Keep up the good work. If I ever make the Florida move work out, I will be borrowing a lot of the designs and concepts you used in your home, in smaller scale for my eventual home.

I'm no carpenter, but I do know lumber, that treated will still be drying, and without some venting, that could start bucking out, as it does dry cause it will shrink. It could sweat, and cause your roof board to rot after some time. Tim S.

I second this, you now have a closed space that will expand and contract with weather and a place for condensation to build. It needs ventilation.

@@TKCL I'm no expert, but it seems you would need to do it to every cavity (2' rafter spacing) because the vents will only work for the cavity they are opening up. The other cavities are still sealed. I hope this makes sense. Another thought I have is metal "sweats" but wood doesn't so not sure that you will get a moisture build up to worry about. If you think about how old houses were built before insulation was a thing, there were dead air spaces and I don't think there was rot because of that. My 2 cents anyway. Have a blessed week.
@TKCL
@TKCL 2 года назад
I've been reading up on it and the general consensus is that if the space below is not conditioned, moisture should not reach dew point and actually settle out of the air.

Well here in Canada they do rotten like that. But simply adding drill holes with a little grill to each row would help. You are simply trying to remove dead air. Not cooling it just if bad air it can dry. At the end you will need to box it that will create a spot for wasps to build nests. The trick is to now and then spray some wd on em

Since you asked, your soffit does need some kind of vents I believe. Nothing crazy. I think if you hadn’t have caulked it that would’ve been probably enough. But if moisture does get in there it’s still going to be trapped end it may not affect the inside of the house but it’s going to affect the wood inside of that structure. It doesn’t have to be vented like a vented ceiling soffit but a few gaps or holes would be a good idea. A lot of people will just use tongue and groove and just not to caulk or seal it. It will be a pain now that’s up there but I think even drilling a few small holes would help, maybe make a metal jig so they are uniform and look good, but just some thing for a little bit of air exchange but not big enough for wasps. Lol You basically created a bunch of cavities up there that are individual so you can’t just do event every 10 or 15 feet. If it were me I would just go along the outside edge and drill a series of small holes. That being said, I don’t think it’s a huge problem so if you just left it you’d probably still be OK, it’s one of those just in case sort of things that’s not really critical but could be beneficial if moisture did get in there.

RR buildings are currently building a non-vented structure, in northern Illinois. The entire outer envelope has to be insulated and heat & air conditioned, that is key.

Unvented is not common here, because the majority of homes use fiberglass insulation in the lower ceiling, not the roof like ours. When you spray foam the entire shell of a home, you do not vent or you would be blowing out conditioned air.
