Police in Nairobi are investigating how a lecturer allegedly duped several students of USIU-Africa out of more than ksh 10 million for a trip to the United Kingdom that never was.
Give those students a free pass on tuition for three semesters to compensate.This was a grave oversight on the part of USIU, as an alumni, this is quite appalling.
The trip is nice and all but paying to a personal account is where i would have drawn the line. I've never seen a situation where a school trip is paid into a teacher's account. That should've been the first redflag.
Exactly 💯..that was a red carpet 😮 Any monies should have been paid to the institutions' account .Looks like even letterheads were fraudulently acquired . If this was an educational trip ,there should have been an invitation from the relevant institution from UK..😮

Some of us are alumni of the university and we know very well that every shilling paid to the university, regardless of what it's being paid for, should go into the school account and not peoples' individual accounts. Those are the university's rules. Upon the lecturer insisting that the money be paid into his own account, the students should have gone straight to the administration to report the issue. This is the legal basis behind the university refusing to bear responsibility for that lost money.
How can someone plan a trip overseas with students and the administration doesn’t? Is my point too. Is like everything in the schools and the countries needs to be overhauled!

It was naive of the students to pay for an alleged university trip to a lecturer's personal account. They can not hold the institution liable since this was apparently a private arrangement between them and the lecturer.
What a shame. Upon my retirement from USIU I was encouraged to apply to be given a contract to continue to teach. But when I did saw nothing happened I just as if it was a joke🤣 In retrospect I was being protected from this negative publicity. It is like "a crime" to be an honest man in this new Kenya.
Those students shouted refunded the money by the University. It’s their responsibility to take care of students in their premises, and that’s why they paid a Professor employed by them the money. They should still come to UK for their planned trip. This cannot happen here!!! The USA embassy should be involved. Good luck and hope you travel soon🙏🏾

University is waste of time &, resources: previously attended this mentioned institution (though not for international relations) this debacle comes as no surprise that guy was sketchy even back then, over a decade & a half ago & he was coordinator then too!!!
Too many comments spewing ignorance here, mara senate, mara VC! Some people need to know how a university functions. It's very easy for all this to happen without the knowledge of the university's top brass, you just need a department to organise a trip overseas.

And even you as a student, how can you be convinced that you pay close to 400k and you agree?? How would you pay that just for a trip even if it is Planet Jupiter and back?
Paying to his bank account should have raised eyebrows! It should be the universities bank account! Universities that should be preparing students for something as simple as informed decision making are greatly failing us. Also the parents who fund such projects, don't they question them! This is a new low USIU.
