Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Poland has been massively upgrading its military. People are worried the war could spread to their country, and more and more civilians are training how to use weapons.
Poland sees itself as a frontline state on NATO’s eastern flank. As such, the country aims to become one of Europe’s strongest military powers and is mobilizing society to achieve that goal. Increasingly popular are military training programs for civilians, offered nationwide by both state and private organizations. Under the slogan ‘Train with the Army’, the Polish armed forces offer one-day taster courses everywhere from big cities to remote regional areas - and demand has been huge. Agnieszka Wojas and Magda Radomska, two friends from Warsaw, have also taken part. Their training included learning to shoot an AK47 assault rifle. Meanwhile, paramilitary groups are also booming. Kamil Mazur is part of Strzelec, one of the largest such groups in the country. It primarily aims to prepare young people for military service. Mazur comes from Rzeszów, a city in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in Poland’s south-east. With the Ukrainian border around 90 kilometers away, the town and its airport have become one of the most important frontline hubs for aid being sent to Ukraine. Every day, military aircraft land here, bringing air defense systems, ammunition and armored vehicles.

American here. The Polish people are some of my favorite in Europe. I hope to visit someday. Your people are so smart and practical. You understand this time now is when you prepare. All of Europe should be doing this. If every country in Europe did this type of preparation, and spent as much on defense as Poland then think of the support that Ukraine could receive. I wish you could count on the USA’s support for Ukraine but you can’t. The silver lining is that Europe is starting to imagine a world where it doesn’t need American protection. This is great. A strong European NATO will allow the USA to focus on China. If authoritarianism spreads. Democracy loses. Every few years we see China updates its map to claim new territory it sees are its territory. We can see where this is going. Take care all. Best wishes.

They dont learn guns through entire school at all. 3) no - plans to build shooting ranges are there from many years - its jut on paper 4) no - Territorial Defence Force does NOT offer logistical support for other branches of the military. It is a seperate, independent military branch like the US National Guard or US Coast Guard. Those are seperate armed organizations gathered in one military.

We say in Poland - if you don't want to maintain your own army, you will feed a foreign one. We experienced this in the past, when the powerful Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth maintained a relatively small, yet elite and well-trained army. The nobility repeatedly refused to increase taxes for the army, this only happened when a conflict broke out. This was not enough in the 17th century, which for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was one great series of wars with all its neighbors. By the 18th century it was too late. And for over a hundred years we had to do just that - maintain the armies of the three powers and fight in their ranks, often against each other. We don't want this to happen again.

It's foolish to think of Russia attacking a nato country without nukes
@Hathur
@Hathur Месяц назад
This is the mistake NATO nations make.. and the more sensible Poles understand due to history. Putin (assuming he takes Ukraine successfully at some point), will look at Poland and call America's bluff. He will say: "I'm going to test Article 5 of the NATO Charter... I don't believe you will start a nuclear war with us and end all life on Earth, just to save Poland." .. and he will attack. Or have we all forgotten already that both the US and UK betrayed Poland after WWII? They both promised Poland to protect it from Soviet Russia... and when Stalin invaded it, they turned their backs on Poland because they deemed a war with Russia was too costly. Putin will make the same gamble. He doesn't think the rest of the world will risk the end of humanity with a nuclear war just to save Poland... and he might very well be right... at the end of the day, I think the rest of the world turns their back on Poland if it means betraying Poland to avoid nuclear war. This is why Poland is so determined to create a powerful army, they KNOW they cannot trust NATO to guarantee protection, they know they can be betrayed like they were after WWII.. so they have to be strong enough to fight alone if needed.

I like the gun range owner. Although I do think he is overestimating the usefulness of simply knowing how to shoot alone. It's all well and good to have those skills, but if a person is not conditioned and trained for battle, knowing how to shoot isn't going to mean much when that person is completely gassed from running for 30 seconds lol. If people plan on being useful in combat, they really need to focus on fitness, especially cardio. Like the dude with the big beard and his son. If that dude has to actually run a long distance, he would be so winded that trying to think clearly, take steady aim, and not cough up his lungs would be near impossible. People severely underestimate the importance of fitness. It cracks me up when I hear people on youtube talk a bunch of tough guy stuff about combat, but they probably can't even do one pull-up or jog for a quarter mile without being winded. I'm sure you all know the type. I'm 36, and my cardio is horrible. I'd be a huge liability to any functioning unit since I couldn't keep up. I used to be amazingly fast and could run for days in my teens and early 20s. I started getting lazy around 27 or 28 years old. I'm not overweight, and I look to be in good shape. I need to build cardio back up and do some strength training to get cut again. I'm about 176 pounds and 5'9 1/2. I guess my point is if anyone out there thinks they may have to fight, which I truly hope you don't, however if you do make sure you are working out as well as learning to shoot!

You are 100% correct. However, those people dont have to be on the front lines in infantry or armor or other combat arms units. It takes about 9 soldiers to support 1 combat soldier. So Territorial Defense with people who might be unfit for straight combat can serve as support to combat soldiers. You need electricians, mechanics, convoy guards, supply etc. They can serve in that role if war comes. And if worst comes they at least have know how to fight. But yeah, for actual combat soldiers you need to be fit. I am like you. Served 8 years in the Army in combat arms. Now I am in my 40s and there is no way I could do job I did in the army. But other stuff, non combat tasks that support soldiers on front lines, absolutely.

Generally, I'm not sure if there's anything like this in the West, but in Poland, there is something called "Civil Defense." It's a formation that deals with: preparing buildings in case of bombings, helps with decontamination, evacuating the population, and most importantly, it focuses on protecting civilians. It seems to me that the man in the movie is referring to civil defense because many shooting clubs cooperate with it.

LOL, these Polish civilians trained for combat in the 1930s as well but the mighty Germans crushed them in less than two weeks. The German Armed Forces under the leadership of then Chancellor Sir Adolf Hitler had a policy to NOT target civilians but these Polish civilians had trained for conflict and continuously fired at the brave German soldiers fighting for our freedom and so, the German Armed Forces had no choice but to retaliate. This is a nice comedy documentary.

Germany unfortunately is one of the worst offenders when it comes to NATO members who spend at least 2% of their GDP on military. They currently spend only 1.4% of their GDP (almost as bad as Canada, who are among the worst offenders, much to my shame). Although they have committed to spending 2%... by 2030. Their military has been cut down by 70% just in the past 25 years, they are in effect today a mostly useless military considering their size and economic strength and have admitted that their stockpiles are so poor, they would run out of artillery munitions in less than 1 month of the kind of warfare Ukraine is currently fighting today.. and keep in mind, they would need about 10 years of straight nonstop manufacturing of munitions to perform the amount of artillery shelling Russia did in just 1 year of war on Ukraine. Russia was manufacturing munitions for decades and still is today, while German munitions factories sat idle and cold (and still do today, most are still not operational).

@@AlfredJPLin They were, 20+ years ago. But since then they gradually and completely gutted their military after the fall the Soviet Union, both in manpower and especially in munitions stockpiles (again, literally only has enough heavy munitions to do 1 month of the kind of war happening in Ukraine, Russia can currently manufacture almost as much munitions as they use per day.. Germany can't even come close, they need 10 days of manufacturing to get 1 day of warfare.. Russia is roughly 1 to 1).

they can only use them at shooting ranges under supervision. In contrast to Serbia there are way less guns in circulation among the civilian population so its way harder for anyone to obtain one. Many Serbians still own guns from the Yugoslav civil wars while Poland hasnt had any major conflict since 1945.
