Take a look at this domestically produced Turkish delight the new 5th generation Tal Kaan MMU fighter jet. . It’s maiden flight on February 21st 2024 felt like a bold statement from the Eurasian country stating they didn’t need any of your foreign technology. What we’re observing right now is an increasing wave of domestically designed advanced fighter jets appearing around the world. This is because Countries are pursuing a concept known as military self-sufficiency where you are beholden to no foreign power for your defense. We’ll also learn how Advanced fighter programs are more than just weapons; they are a sign of national pride within your country and a strong symbol of deterrence against your would-be enemies. So What does the Kaan fighter jet’s mission and weapon systems tell us about their greater military strategy? What geopolitical and diplomatic factors lead to its development? I’m your average infantryman chris cappy fire off a foxtrot 2 at the like and subscribe button and lets find out.

Turkey’s search for independence
First of all let me explain what is at stake here for the Turkish air force and why they desire a 5th gen fighter. You might not know it but since 2015 The Turkish air force has been very busy. They’ve pulled off hundreds of air strikes into Syria and Iraq many of them unilateral and some of them in partnership with the US led coalition against ISIS. This map from airwars.org shows us a view of where the casualties are from these strikes. These attacks have a dual mission, the first was to destroy ISIS and the second was to target Kurdish forces.
With this comes the risk of return fire because one of their 3rd generation F-4 phantom jets was shot down by the Syrian air force. 3 years later a 4th generation Turkish F-16 shot down a Russian Su-24M near their border with Syria that they claimed had violated their air space. In 2023 alone the Turkish air force executed 128 air strikes inside northern Syria. So Considering how active their air force is in the feild it’s clear why from a combat tactical point of view it’s important. We’ll also dive into why it’s important on a political and operational level too later. Safe to say there is a lot riding on the program. To safely deliver ordnance in the modern world that’s lousy with anit-air defense, you need a 5th generation aircraft.
In the realm of military aviation, Turkey’s emergence as a player in indigenous fighter jet development has garnered significant international attention. Headlines covering the Kaan’s maiden flight included words and expressions like “impressive,” “history-shattering”, “a pivotal point”, and “a new titan takes into the skies”. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) designed the Kaan to reach all modern fighter performance benchmarks which includes: a maximum speed of Mach 1.8 to 2.2, a service ceiling of 55,000 ft, a range of 700 miles on internal fuel, and a tolerance for maneuvers exerting up to 9 Gs. What makes a fighter 5th gen as opposed to 4th gen? Low radar visibility, high agility and the ability to conduct network centric warfare. So far, only three countries have successfully developed a fifth-generation fighter: Russia, China and the US. Among them, only China and the US have managed to manufacture the fighters in significant numbers. So if Turkey becomes the fourth nation to develop a fifth-generation fighter, that’s no small feat.

From being Ottoman Empire one of the most feared empire to becoming a NATO lap dog or a US base. Turkey has S-400 Russia said they are not selling those only S-300 were available for purchase. Patriot System lacks distance, it is extremely expensive to operate & maintain, that's why Turks went for Russian systems.

Turkish 5th Gen fighter jet Spec: - 360 degree Gan (Gallium Nitride) Active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar - Infrared search and track (IRST) - 360 degree Electronic warfare suite (EW) - Electro Optical targeting system (EOTS) - Directional Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM) - Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) - TULGAR Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) 1.8 mach cruise speed 2.5 mach max speed Internet weapon bay 55.000 feet operational altitude BVR Air2Air missiles WVR Air2air missiles Cruise missiles Anti-Ship missiles Air launched ballistic missiles Precision guided rockets Anti-radiation missile Kamikaze (Loitering) drones TULGAR Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) Color screen and digital night vision technologies will be used for the first time in the system, which was developed as binocular (two optical channels) and viewfinder reflective. In this way, color-specific groupings (friend, foe, etc.) can be made in the symbology information. A hybrid (optical-inertial) system is designed as a head tracking system. The inner helmet will be specially produced for the pilot in terms of both comfort of use and proper viewing. For this, the head structure of the pilot will be scanned and the inner helmet will be processed according to the data generated after the scan. The visor will also be personalized according to the pilot in terms of oxygen mask and face form compatibility. Headphones will have active noise suppression (ANR-Active Noise Reduction) technology, and the pilot's awareness will be increased by transferring the 3D sound from the aircraft's internal speech system in stereo. The image obtained by using high-precision line of sight information from the 360-degree image created by the electro-optical systems on the aircraft will be projected onto the viewfinder and will provide a sense of use as if the aircraft does not have a fuselage. ASELSAN's 3D Audio Technology is based on HRTF (Human Related Transfer Function). 3D Audio is created spatially based on the location information of the warning and the head movements of the pilot. So the sound is transmitted as if it is coming from above, below, right or left. Thanks to 3D Audio technology, the pilot's environmental awareness increases, response time and workload decrease. Radio separation is created using 3D Audio. Communication channels are transmitted to the pilot from different angles so that the pilot can easily distinguish between channels. 3D Audio Features • Real-Time Operation • Radio Separation • Directional Warning • Global Positioning • Reduced Response Time • Reduced Workload • Increased Environmental Awareness Even the F35/F22 does NOT have these features combined

This is half true. USA DID NOT REFUSE TO SELL PATRIOT MISSILE SYSTEMS to Turkey. The "clever" (read dull) Turkey wanted to steal the Know-how and blueprints from the original manufacturer who have spent years of Research and Development for such an artifact of modern American Science and Technology. All other allies of USA had no problem aquiring the systems. Only Turkey had the "anatolian bargaining" as usually in her attitude. Even if you convert it to the 5th generation, it will remain weak in terms of weapons - avionics - electronic warfare - artificial intelligence and range. Our aircraft has the largest dimensions among the 5th generation aircraft and there is a clear way for it to be converted into the 6th generation. I'd like to say it's not too late yet, but I can't say that because I know you've spent a lot of money and your people's expectations are high. For everyone who doesn’t know Turkish engineers helped design and had key roles in many 5th gen programs here in the USA. F135 engine for the f35 and the F119 engine for the F22. I worked with Turkish engineers daily on the engine line as I’m a jet engine mechanic on both of those platforms. I remember the day they were no longer working with us and out of the program but that’s after 10 or 15 years. I 1000% know they can build a good jet. Because they helped build ours.

@@Kenny-yl9pc If you don't know anything about the subject you're talking about, you should avoid being so specific. It is wrong to directly compare the F-35 with any other fighter project. In the JSF project, three different aircraft were designed, using common parts and one of which could land vertically. Besides sensor fusion, this is the most important reason why the project cost is so high and the development time is so long. Are there definitive written requirements that make an aircraft 5th generation? If our criterion for being the 5th generation is the F-35, there is no other 5th generation fighter in the world. The K-21, which some call the 5th generation, does not have an internal weapon station and uses the F-414 engine. J-20 must not meet the 5th generation criteria with those canards. SU-57 is a completely different story anyway. Even the F-22 should not be considered the 5th generation since it does not have sensor fusion like the F-35. Moreover, even the F-35 has other problems, such as limited super cruise ability and very high exhaust gas temperature, which negatively affects the stealth feature of the F-135 engine. The aviation technology and industry that you say Turkey does not have was one of the most important parts manufacturers for the F-35. It was producing both the middle fuselage and some parts of the F-35, which is the most complex body part, and many critical parts of the F-135 engine. Some of which it was the sole supplier of. Even F-35 program manager Tom Burbage said in an interview that Turkey is one of the best and trouble-free suppliers in the program and their problem is that they cannot give more work to Turkey because they have to give work to other program partners. Turkeye had previously announced that the first models would be the 4.5 generation KAAN Block 10. Aselsan develops the avionics and EOTS system. Research on radar absorbing paints and coatings has been carried out for years. The radar, which you say does not exist, was made in Turkey, including its microchip design, and testing of the finished prototypes has even begun. KAAN has two important parts that will be foreign sourced. One is the engines and the other is the ejection seat, both of which are being worked on, especially the engine. Türkiye is developing an aircraft that suits its needs and it doesn't have to be better than the F-35 in every aspect. Yes, Turkey will need time, especially for engine and sensor fusion, but they are not expected to be in the first block anyway. So it would be better if you do some research before you start talking nonsense.

This is the whole summary of the s400 crisis. The Americans first tried to sell the old versions at a very high price, then when the s400 issue came up, this time Turkey asked for technology transfer, which was rejected, which I think was stupid. It was by design. Congress had a report in front of them at that point by Intelligence community that claimed strengthening Turkish defensive capabilities would harm US' ability to guide policy in Iraq and Syria. By limiting what Turkey could produce and deploy, the intent was to keep absolute control of Syrian-Iraqi Kurdish corridor and first operational intelligence on any PKK YPG assets ( as those are proven to be supported by US High command) Result is that it backfired spectacularly. While the buying of S-400s were expected, the end result of kicking Turkey out of F-35 program backfired. For one thing, the F-35 parts produced in Turkey had to be rebranded and reproduced somewhere else. Multiple US based companies offered to pick up the slack, but both the cost increase and lack of manpower in domestic US disallowed that. So it shifted to netherlands. That caused a big delay in F-35 scheduling. But that's small potatoes, logistics stuff. What really backfired was what happened next. That event triggered the national defense initiative response, which Erdogan did use to enrich his own son in law, but that aside, it effectively caused Turkey to quickly prototype and deploy UAVs. And set aside a lot more funding for military research. So then the military attack helicopters started being replaced from American cobras to Turkish made ones. That process is underway. Large parts of missile infrastructure Task went over in this video is also a result of that. Multiple missilies covering more verticals than standard NATO ammunition were made. As Dutch made arms are generally more expensive, and US arms are tied to Congress approval, guess what happened? All the 3rd world nations looking for cheaper alternatives started buying from Turkish military industrial complex. This all happened in last 10 years, give or take. S-400 crisis wasnt the source of it, but a big catalyst. Essentially, the big reason why Turkey right now has a dominating position in UAV market or project some soft power over allies even US cannot properly control is because Congress was stupid enough to listen to CIA. Edit: Oh, and needless to say, the dream of controlling Syrian-IRaqi kurdish corridor blew up in US' face. Syrian govt didnt fall, so Russia moved in. Northern Iraqis saw US support was worth nearly nothing. ISIS made several attempts at a resurgence and while coalition did beat them back down, they never went away. And Israel just shook the leash of US control and now running rampant. US soft power completely crumbled away thx to combined efforts from the last 4 administrations.

I don't want to bother you, but there is an error. The only country that gave us air defense technology is Russia. You said The United States hand over technology to SK, but that's not true. contrary. As Korean technology began to surpass that of the United States, Israel and the United States suddenly began to visit, asking for “technology exchange.” As revealed in several orders, SK Technology has surpassed the United States. The United States never provides air defense system technology to its allies (Israel may be an exception). South Korea developed an air defense system together with Russia. In Russia it is called S-350. Korea also contributed to the development of Russia's S-400. In any case, SK's air defense system was initially 100% based on Russian technology, but as the United States and Israel cooperated in technology at the request of the United States and Israel, it is now a mixture of technologies from several countries. In any case, the roots of our technology lie in Russia, and we will not forget Russia’s gratitude. As I write, America's contradictions become more and more evident. The U.S. policy of oppressing countries that do not depend on others with the will for independent defense is a big mistake. I respect the strong will of the Turkish people. We have been oppressed so much by the United States that you can imagine how difficult it must be for the Turks. Even if we develop even old missiles, we face all kinds of threats, intimidation, boycotts, pressure, import and export bans, etc. We too have experienced this over the past 50 years. ... ....

With Russia steadily antagonizing their former republics and partners, new markets for Turkish defence systems can open up in the Central Asian republics and in Georgia. Central Asia has already established very friendly relationships with Turkey due to the common Turkic historic and cultural heritage. They have already formed an Organization of Turkic States, with even Hungary as an observer state. With Turkey becoming a major weapon producer, their influence over the other Turkic states will only grow.

Thank you for the balanced report. I just want to add that Turkish success is not to limited to this 5th Generation Aircraft, although it is the climax of it for now. In the air defence field, they first produced Hurkus training aircraft with turboprop engine, then the built Hurjet which is a jet-engine powered training/close support aircraft. They are also producing fighter and multi-purpose helicopters (Atak I, Atak II, Gokbey, etc.,). They are producing various types of UAV's and drones, including two Un-Manned jet aircrafts: Kizilelma by Baykar (same company that produces Byraktar 2), and Anka 3 by TUSAS the same company that produces KAAN. They have also developed their own multi-layer air-defence system which is on the production line but it constantly gets range improvements. Within a few years, Turkiye won’t need S-400 systems anymore as its own indigenous system will overpass S-400 capabilities. For the Navy, they built various ships/submarines, etc., as well as their own Aircraft carrier. It is predicted that in 2024 Turkiye’s weapon exports will be around $13 Billion USD.

As a Turkish citizen, I have always been curious about the thoughts of Europeans, particularly Americans, which is why I want to share with you how the events mentioned in the video unfolded. First, let me say that no country is perfect; everyone has their faults. Just as the Russian Federation is seen as the successor to the USSR, we in Turkey are seen as the continuation of the Ottoman Empire by the rest of the world. The embargo imposed in 1975, as mentioned in the video, was implemented because of Turkey's 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, supported by a young senator at the time, Joe Biden. We did not invade Cyprus; the Turks living there were being massacred despite Turkey's repeated warnings (which lasted at least five years). The killings continued unabated. Our military was so weak and in such a dire state that we even struck our own warship due to communication failures. Following this, there was a prolonged American embargo due to Greece's pressures, marking a turning point in Turkey's current military capabilities. At that time, we couldn't even produce a pistol bullet. The proximity of Cyprus to Israel led to security concerns that brought Greece and Israel closer, even though Greece was one of the last countries to recognize Israel (1992), while Turkey recognized it just a year after its establishment and had good relations despite being a predominantly Muslim country. Jumping ahead in history to 2009, at an economic forum attended by Israel, current Turkish President Erdoğan's "One Minute" incident marked the first time Turkey rejected the role assigned to it on the global chessboard by major powers. Since then, relations between Turkey and Israel have never been good. In 2010, when Turkey sent an aid ship to Gaza, it was seized by Israeli military forces in international waters, killing 10 Turkish civilians without any justification, an incident known as the Mavi Marmara incident. You can look this up. Turkey's development in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as shown in the video stems from these events. Back then, Turkey was facing terrorism issues in the eastern and southeastern regions, and the only UAVs we had were Israeli-made Herons. The ridiculous part was that while we thought we were monitoring terrorists with these, Israel was watching them before us and had already provided intelligence to the terrorists. The main reason Turkey has become so strong in UAVs today is due to getting kicked while trying to defend itself. The S-400 air defense system issue mentioned in the video is also connected to this, as there is a well-known strong Jewish lobby in America, and by the 2010s, some senators, seeing a strengthening Turkey as an enemy, wanted Turkey out of the F-35 program. This long process continued until the Syrian Civil War erupted in 2011. As the successor of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey realized it was incapable of even protecting its airspace from birds and requested the Patriot air defense system from the U.S., a request that went unanswered for many years. Due to the increasing missile attacks along the border and the loss of civilians, Turkey was forced to meet its air defense needs by purchasing the S-400 from Russia. Citing this as a reason, America removed us from the F-35 program, but it was really about breaking the claws of a non-compliant and uncontrollable Turkey in terms of air power because the region's largest air force had become a threat to Israel. One of the reasons the S-400 issue is utterly absurd is that Greece, a NATO member, has had the S-300 for a long time without any issues. Also, the idea that the F-35's information would fall into Russian hands is equally ludicrous because even now, Israel, which has an F-35 fleet, can freely enter Syrian airspace, where Russia already has the S-400 deployed and has likely obtained all radar signatures of the F-35 for years. This hasn't been a problem for America, but it's an issue for NATO ally Turkey. In short, Turkey's current military strength has always come thanks to the adversities from its regional neighbors. America has never seen NATO member Turkey as an ally due to the powerful Jewish lobby, and their hostile actions are what have led us to this point. There's an old Turkish proverb: "A bad neighbor makes you a homeowner."

You mix some truths with big lies as a real follower of Joseph Goebbels... The illegal turkish invasion of 1974 after a treason by greek yunta in the Democracy of Cyprus with all the barbaric killings of Greco-Cyprians women and children and old people and the brutal rapes of them made by Turkish troops you call it as "Peace Operation"... You have been brain-washed by the deep turkish state...A real nazi practice. And many more lies. For example The truth is that Greece existing S-300 systems were purchased by Cyprus for defending the Island but after a strong diplomatic opposition mainly by Israel and secondary by Turkey, USA suggested and the 2 Hellenic States aggreed that S-300 will be transferred to defend Crete and Dodecanese and in return Greece transferred some of her TOR-M1 short range anti-air systems to Cyprus. The other lie is that America did not wanted sell Patriot system to Turkey. IT IS A BIG WRONG TURKISH PROPAGANDA. USA in reality had no problem sell her Patriot system. Bur "Clever" Turkey wanted in reality to aquire the know-how and the blueprints which is UNACCEPTABLE BY ANY MANUFACTURER. Then Turkey purchased one S-400 system from Russia BUT THE RUSSIANS ALSO DID NOT GIVE THEIR INDUSTRIAL SECRETS AND KNOW-HOW TO TURKS! A big strategic mistake of Erdogan's administration. So neither USA Patriots nor USA F-35 and NO RUSSIAN S-400 BLUEPRINTS FOR TURKEY. In other words the American F-35 is like Ferrari model 2024 supercar while the Turkish KAAN is like Lada model 1970. Such an analogy...

"1.We know it can’t be classified as a fifth gen fighter due to the lack of stealth and outdated engines. Its definitely not easy to make a fifth generation fighter from scratch in a non super power country." Have some faith in your countrymen. There are serious investments made to make it as stealthy as its competition. The engines aren't optimized for stealth, sure but those engines are for rapid prototyping and early delivery. Turkiye has the capability to develop and manufacture F-22-grade engines. They just need time to do it by the international book. "2. We know it looks like the combination of the f22 and f35. Our main engineers came from those programs and thus were informed about the benefits of such designs." Eh, true No need to reinvent the wheel, especially if you're under time crunch. "3. South(Syria, iraq), east (armenia azerbaijan), north (ukraine, russia), only the west with greece is safe and thats on thin ice." Now this is a loaded sentence. Where do I start? "We definitely need the important relationship from the west and the east to keep ourselves safe" Yes, I guess?! We gotta be in touch with both the West AND the East in order to look out for our interests. The key point is to not be subservient to both them while promoting prosperous, peaceful, dignified bilateral relationships. "Literally every side of our country’s border is facing a war" Mostly true. The Eastern front with Armenia is mostly stabilized, however there are agitators there who want to reignite the conflict and stir shit up. the Western front with Greece is far, FAR from safe. 7:16 Turkey asked for American defense missiles and the US never responded positively. All the NATO allies’ doors were closed in front of Turkey even if they have genuine issues and have to defend themselves against Iran militias, Kurdish Terrorists, Armenia and others. Then, Turkey had either Russian or Chinese missiles options and they went for the Russian option as there are NATO countries already using them today (Greece and few European East block countries). The fun part is that they have received a very agressive response from their western NATO “allies”. It’s like we are not selling you the missiles, you can’t buy them from our enemies (even if we allow some of our allies to do it) and also, you can’t manufacture them inland. On the S-400, that was a desperation moved from Turkey and they have provided all the guarantees that the US could have asked for. Knowing that the S-400 is only rumored to have F35 tracking which is very unlikely as the tech in it is a bit old. Also, Russia didn’t sell S-300 AFAIK and the S-300 weren’t going to fill the need. In short, a deeply rooted mistrust from US and European allies towards Turkey has been very visible for everyone to see. Not unexpected but sad given all the sacrifices that Turkey has done for the allies especially in the Cold War.

@@Sikader the US was already mad at turkey and wanted to kicked them out of the 5th gen program but needed a reason for it, it threatened them many time before they finally did it for many reason eventually forcing them to buy other air system to get a reason to kick them. because working in 5th gen and buying s400 which is design to beat 5th gen is a security risk.

Maybe if Turkey apologized for the Armenian genocide and stopped trying to use their weapons to kill Kurdish civilians in order countries and stopped trying to displace Kurds in their own country the civilized world would be more willing to cooperate with them

Crucially, despite what the politicians and media propagandists want to say, Turkey is the longest standing non-founding NATO member. They are a crucial ally. A stronger Turkish air force is a stronger NATO air force.

Honestly im glad they developed a decent aircraft. I like seeing other NATO countries make significant advancements in their hardware. We can't have every country rely on American airpower or we will fall behind
