Her face when Don sings “you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave” was amazing. Hotel California is one of the greatest songs of all time
In my mind "Hotel California" is THE trademark song of the Eagles. It was their #1 hit at the highest point in the band's career. Others may argue for different songs, but to me this is the one.
I met Timothy B. Schmidt-bass player and lead vocals on I Can’t Tell You Why in Sacramento California at Tower records for a book signing he was doing before the Hell Freezes Over tour in 94. His two elementary school teachers were there. Kindergarten and 1st grade. I’ll never forget the look on his face when they surprised him!
I've got news for you, I live in Southern California and they still are. I probably hear this song between 2-4 times on the radio EVERY day. It's hard for me to step back and remember how good it is because it's so over-played here.
The eagles are considered " America's Beatles." Their greatest hits record is the biggest selling record of all time in all genre,, I was fortunate enough to see them twice in concert. They are as good live as they are on recording, They are the voice of a generation.. the greatest american band of all time...
This is one of the albums that defined 70's rock.. I was in high school when it came out and it was everywhere. Just about every song on the album is fire. Worth checking out!
You are listening to a great classic song by the Eagles i just turned 59 today and I have heard this song over million times since the 70's and it is one of my favorite songs by them have a great Saturday evening and Thank You very much Adrianna. 👑💎👑💎👑💎👑💎
Happy Birthday from South East London. I would love to exchange my 69 years for your 59! lol Make sure you make the most of every day as time will seem, to pass much more quickly now. Also, weariness can set in and I have had only 2 hours in Hospital since 1960 but,for example, 3 hours ago,I went to watch a movie and just crashed out, which is beginning to happen more frequently now and never dis at "59"
This is one song you can NEVER get tired of hearing. It has absolutely everything to draw you in and keep you listening. Another one you'll probably like is "Sympathy For The Devil" but the Rolling Stones. It is a great teaching tale.
One of the best songs of all times. I have been an Eagles fan since they first came on the scene.Yes I have been around that long. My regret is I never got to see them live.
1970's California was a very strange, exhilarating time to be alive. Every single night, somewhere in the Hills or the Valley, you could find parties and people that defied explanation and sanity straight out of a David Lynch film. It was glorious, it was tragic, it was enough to melt your mind, and it will never happen again. I miss it dearly.
The drummer is the lead vocalist. So rare. I freakin' love it. Simply an amazing song. Worthy of a classic status. And let's not forget about those guitarists. They killed this.
One of the most talked about songs lyrically. So many different opinions on what its about. Don Henley finally said its about going from innocence to experience.
The singer/drummer is Don Henley. Those that can sing and drum at the same time are a special breed of musicians. Many of the Eagles also had great solo careers such as Don Henley, Don Felder, Joe Walsh, and Glenn Fry. The entire album is outstanding that even if you can't react to it, still check it out on your own. You will definitely dig it.
I agree. It’s very rare to see drummer sing a whole song. I can count on my hand. Heck he’s one of co lead singers of the band and half of their hits are sung by him and the late Glenn Frey (he’s the one playing the acoustic guitar).
There are particular songs and artist from the past that I enjoy watching young people discover. "Hotel California" is definitely one of them. It never gets old. I have the same enjoyment from people discovering the contemporary artist Dimash, well-known around the world, but not so much in the USA.
In the 1970s everyone listened to the radio, so when a song was popular it was in everyone's mind and feeling for many months. Then a whole year came to be associated with the feeling of that song.
Hey Adrianna! Great reaction to a truly legendary and iconic song! I should warn you I've heard from other reactors that The Eagles are particularly harsh in the enforcement of the copyright. So I hope you can keep this up, but don't take it too hard if you get flagged.. That said I'm really glad you're expanding to music reactions as well. I can't wait to see what you bring us next. As always thanks all the hard work and have a wonderful rest of your weekend!!
I think it's mostly Don Henley enforcing the copyright. I heard he has over 50 people scanning the internet for infractions. Then at the other end of the scale, there are other artists like Phil Collins that encourage people to feature his songs. He thinks of it as free advertisements.
This is the absolute greatest song about a drug rehab center ever written. It beats all other rehab songs. Hahaha, But seriously, this song is so deep in what it says about how addiction can get a hold of you and not let go. It still blows my mind and I’ve been an Eagles fan forever.
I was 15 first time hearing this song. My family and i were going vacation and traveling through the Smokey Mountains. Listening to rock was forbidden in my house so we had to be sneaky about it. I caught one radio station in the mountains that would come in even slightly good. Made it through the song as the station faded away. Between that and my father and i pulling over in a rainstorm to listen to "I love a Rainy Night" by Eddie Rabbit are two of my fondest childhood memories. How sad is that?
Hotel California is really about being in Mental Institution hospital or rehab. As they say in the song "you can check in ( into the Mental Hospital or rehab) anytime you like, but you can never leave" .
My mom was a big fan of the Eagles and she requested that at her funeral that no sad “church music” as she called it, she wanted to hear nothing but the Eagles, so when that time came, she got her wish! At the time her funeral was taking place, there was also another funeral taking place and some of the people from that funeral started coming over and asking what was going on😂we just told them we were throwing a party for mom😂
This is my favorite group. I’ve seen them twice and I hope to see them one more time before they stop touring in 2 years. I saw the Hotel California tour 3 years ago. I was born 4 years after Hotel California and it was so cool to hear my favorite Eagles album in concert. Don Henley (the drummer) is an amazing drummer. He and the late Glenn Frey (he’s the one playing the acoustic guitar) have written so many great songs together.
One of the all-time great bands that produced several hit songs. Also known to reproduce and at times even sound better than their studio recordings. Had the pleasure of seeing them in concert twice, last one in Baltimore in 2022.
Maybe the greatest group of talent on stage at one time ever All we're lead singers .all had their own careers separate from the group All we're great musicians.
AH The Eagles, they were kind of like lightning in a bottle. If you're interested in another song from them, { Take it to the limit } is a really good one.
@@davebrownlee8506I think you misunderstood me, Lightning in a bottle is not the same as a flash in the pan. You are correct about how they ruled the airwaves for decades.
I agree on take it to the limit. My favorite song of theirs!. But you have to find the one that Randy Meisner did at this same concert in 1977. It’s very, very hard, obviously I have found, to find that one to react to. Don Henley is notoriously stingy about letting people react to Eagles music. But even if you can’t find one to react to, you HAVE to listen to it, and then in one of your Eagles reactions, maybe, say how great it is. There’s no doubt in my mind you will think it is. Because I love Randy Meisner so much, I think it’s the best performance ever recorded but even if you don’t know who he is, I think you will have to admit he did outstanding, outstanding, outstanding on this performance. Not long after this, Glenn Frey and him got into a fight because he didn’t want to get out there, thinking he couldn’t hit the very high notes of this song every night. He was very shy, and didn’t like to be the center of attention and that song was the only one that he was lead. One night he had been sick and didn’t wanna go back for the encore of that song because he thought he could not hit the high notes. Frey physically got in his face, and after that, it was only a matter of time before Randy left. He was the most humble& kind of anybody in the Eagles group (even they say). I will say, I don’t like Henley and Frey because they’re so greedy and egomaniacs, but without them, we would not have the Eagles.
The way I experienced this song as a kid was similar. Is so well layered, it takes time to digest. Lyrics, meaning it's a journey harmonies, vocal, guitars, musicians putting it all together. First times it grabbed me but all I could focus on was the Lyrics
1995 "hell Freezes Over" Tour.....That was a moment in time I cherish. One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest bands of all time. I thank the Lord I got to see these guys live one time in my life.
The Eagles are a great band... one of the songs I like by them that I feel is under played is "Those Shoes". I love the attitude in the song. Don and Joe's use of the talkbox on the guitar are great...
Perfect Halloween song! WAY back when I was a young nerd, we used to play games like Dungeons & Dragons, though in this case it was a horror based game called Chill. I used this song as the clues to the mission. It was a blast! We pretty much came to the conclusion that we weren't going to top it so we pivoted to another game IP. We TRIED, but no other session came close. We pretty much retired that game after that. If you want the details, I distracted everyone with having the lights low and bought some dry ice to create a fog on the table. No one noticed I had set up speakers and covered them with black linen. I then had a tape deck under my seat with the song cued to the points in the song that I needed. Then I used some mood setting descriptions then said that they could almost hear something on the wind calling to them. By this point I had already started the tape and was slowly bringing the volume up until they could hear it. Half of the group jumped out of their skins and the other were awed with the innovative use of music. It was truly a wonderful moment that will be brought up whenever two, or more of the group members meets.
California in the 70s and 80s every musician alive came here. The sunset strip, Cal jam, us festival…. I have easily seen over 100 groups play live. (Every legendary musician you can think of)
There is also a reference to Steely Dan in this song: 'They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast'. They put that in as a joke, and because they were friends with the guys in the band.
Always loves the Eagles and oooh yeah the singer/drummer I cleaned his Moms car in the mid 90s and the same place his first band (the 4 Speeds) played Lanier Chevrolet in Linden Texas ... Sadly i never got to meet Don
The Eagles kick ass plain and simple their music transcends time there just isn't any music that can stand up to this standard of brilliance even to this day. Absolute legends
I was lucky to catch The Eagles live in 2014 during their _History of The Eagles_ tour. I'm glad that I did it when I did because that turned out to be the last tour to have founding member Glenn Frey in it. He died in early 2016.
Great reaction and thanks for sharing. Other amazing songs from that era were Boston 'More than a feeling'; Heart 'Magic Man'; Kansas 'Carry on Wayward Son'; Yes 'I've Seen All Good People'; Steve Miller 'Fly Like an Eagle'; Styx 'Come Sail Away'; Chicago '25 or 6 to 4'; Al Stewart 'Year of the Cat'; Cat Stevens 'Morning has Broken'; Elton John 'Goodbye Yellowbrick Road'; Stevie Wonder 'Superstition'; and so many more. It was a great time to be growing up and discovering music. So many other artists were so good in the time period. Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, Don McLean, ELO and more. Nice to see you branch out and do songs too. Your movie coverage is outstanding. Chris
