My mother had a graduate student from Poland in the late '70s. He went to the store with my mother once and was nearly in tears to see the meat available. At that time, meat was scarce in Poland. I'm so glad those days are past.
I also remember those years, went to Poland twice in the 70s . I remember the meat shops completely empty and kolejki(lineups) everywhere. I asked my cousin what they were for. It was summer and some peaches from Turkey were available. This was so foreign to me, I was in shock, being a spoiled young lady from 🇨🇦.when I now see videos of Poland I am in awe. I so want to return, health willing. Btw love your cooking style, very much like my mothers. My kids live for meat pierogi, koleczki, golabki, rolady, barszcz z uszkami . My mom was from Kolo, central Poland . My parents immigrated to Canada from Dachau in 1947. My father survived Auschwitz #162978, he was fr. Bochnia and mom was taken as forced labour to a farm in Germany for 5 years as a teenager. They met at DP camp and were sponsored by a couple in Kingston, Ontario. We are so blessed. People have no idea. Thankyou for your videos!
@@andrewmichels7804 Your father was lucky to survive. My father's cousin retired to Poland and worked with the Underground around Auschwitz. He used up all the money he'd saved in the US for his retirement, putting it toward the work of the Underground. When the war was over, he came back here and said he never wanted to go back to Poland because of what he'd seen.
There is a french movie The Gendarme in New York with Louis de Funes from the seventies. They the gendarmes were searching meat shops to buy meat which is not packed in cellophane as they were preparing dishes French way and it was a blasphemy to use cellophaned meat. In Poland then there was a saying that before the war there was a shop sign "The butcher" and there was meat inside while in a communist times opposite a sign said "Meat" and inside there was only a butcher. During a movie show when on the screen appeared pictures of NY meat shops all audience started to shout and behave as football fans and it was like anticommunist demonstration.
I don't want be rude but I'm Polish and I've had enough this comments about Poland in 70's or during second war.Is it important? Nobody comments how American shops looked years ago. The past is past
That was a fun trip. I can.not.believe how clean and put together that store is. That's a fantastic grocery store to say the least! Nothing like Super Walmart around here, usually sooo messy. It seems like Polish people (shoppers and employees alike) take pride in keeping the store presentable. Where I live (in North TX) we are getting an HEB grocery store, and we can't wait (along the lines of this store)! HEBs are primarily in central TX. The variety of foods in your meat and fish departments is great. I've seen the mall entry store in some other country too, can't remember which though. That's really different. Keep the cool videos coming!
Polish grocery stores are really interesting. Prince polo is one of my favorite chocolate wafers to get at the Polish market in my city. Greetings from Canada
Me and my wife love watching the videos Very nice there and I recognize some of products I have landlords that or from Poland and have their own store and smoke their own meats. Utica, NY
I am half - maybe more - Polish and I was surprised how much I love pickled fish (and mushrooms). I avoided the pickled fish for a long time, but my grandma's love for it made me try it and I've been a convert ever since. There is not enough pickled fish in the world :) Wow, I wish our stores had a meat section as complete as yours. I always love wandering through local grocery stores when I travel - it's the best way to learn about food culture. Thanks for the trip!!
I agree completely about going to grocery stores while traveling. We do it regularly because it lets you know what the locals really eat, not just what they serve tourists in restaurants. Thanks for watching!
Greetings from an American ex-pat in Ireland (of all places). I'm so glad you both have American experience to compare Polish foods etc, with American. I will come back to Poland once travel bans are lifted and it's warmer.
loved seeing the grocery store thru your eyes, it was very interesting. Funny how some food tastes are so different there. The huge section of picked/jarred fish was surprising.
i havent been to Poland for decades (since 1992 when i was there for a week ) I am soooooooooooooo happy shops are so wonderful and that there is so much wonderful variety . i am your greatest fan in Sydney Australia!
What Poland looks like now and how it has changed, some Poles who left 20-30 years ago are shocked at how now houses are built in Poland Girls from Ukraine are walking on the streets of Lublin ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--d3-PiKnw1M.html&ab_channel=NAPOZITIVE
Supermarkets here in Australia 🇦🇺 are very ordinary compared to that one a one stop shop it’s brilliant. Keep up the videos they are brilliant 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
How wonderful it is to see the variety and abundance of the available products in the Free Poland. Before most of the Polish agricultural products were shipped to USSR, where we were left with a tiny pinch of our hard work. Gladly we owe our freedom to ourselves proving to the rest of the world that we are independent industrious and hard working nation. God bless Poland.
That was fun and I totally agree about the shopping carts! If you can push the darned thing in the store for a 30+ minutes, you can push it an additional 30 secs to the cart return area.
There is a large Polish Grocery Store in Ontario, Canada just outside of Toronto. It's about a 45 minute drive but worth it. They have an amazing deli, meat section, and sausages galore! Plus they have hot foods and a bakery. It's called Starsky's Fine Foods. It looks a lot like that grocery store and just a little bit smaller.
One thing I love about your channel is that you cook with real food. Seeing all the prepared foods in the store reminds me of how the big food industry controls what most people eat. I would love to see the ingredient list for some of those packaged foods. Cooking your own food always wins as you show on your channel. The pleasure derived from shopping, preparing, and eating together is lost with all the convenience foods.
Thank you! That was allot of fun! As soon as the "pandemonium pandemic" is over Poland is definitely on my travel list! I live the compatibility of the grocery's there! Very European and smart - maybe one day the US will catch on lol 😁
Shopping carts in the parking spaces is one of my pet peeves as well. You also have people who remove the carts and push them home and you can see them along certain areas, mainly apartments buildings. I enjoyed your grocery shopping and information. Thanks for sharing!
I really enjoyed this video. The bread made me so hungry - I miss European bread. The bread in the USA is terrible. Prices on groceries are so cheap in Poland, from what I can see.
Thank you for taking us on your shopping trip. It was really nice to see how other countries set up the markets and the different item that are available.
Absolutely LOVED this video.......when we travel the supermarket is our first port of call....my family spend hours looking at all the wonderful different foods that we can’t get here. Today was a feast for the eyes 👀. Thank you so much for allowing us to travel 🧳 without moving from our home. Stay safe. Blessings to you from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺💕
This store reminds me of the one we have in South Africa. We call ours FOOD LOVERS MARKET. It's just as huge. It's awesome to shop at a huge store you can find almost everything.
Interesting video, thanks for posting! I spent a lot of my childhood in Amherst, Massachusetts. There were a lot of Polish names in the area. They were not recent immigrants and I always wondered about how so many Polish families ended up in that part of the state. A good friend was named Wasciewicz. There was also the Kamanskis and Skibiskis.
Czesc, thank you for a super view of your supermarket, so interesting & I am amazed at the amount of varieties you have, (for instance, ketchup)!!! Cannot wait to visit again. Danusia.
Hey Guys Frank (Franus) Cieliczka from Linden Michigan. You guys are great just found you when I put in Polish food on You Tube!!!! What an idea taking us to the store!!!! Thank you
Love the Friday shows! A little slower maybe next time , I got a little car sick for a minute 🤢 What a great selection of everything, Mark and I share the same favorite aisle. Btw, making one of your raw salads today to have with tomorrow’s dinner. Yum
Talk about going to your local grocery store for some meat and end up returning home with also a new boat lol .. Place is massive, I thought that when you were out in the parking. Thinking no way that is only a grocery store, now I see!
That was fantastic! My husband Tony and I were enthralled! This so reminds me of Auchan in Bydgoszcz but your B1 is so much bigger! I’ve never seen a B1 before. Thank you so much for this. I know it sounds silly but it makes us so happy to watch- and shout slow down, I want to look! 😉. And now I’m going to show this to my UK friends and tell them THIS is what I’ve been talking about! The food and the choice is immense!! The kitchen section is immense too. I love shopping in Poland.
We really didn't realize how fast we were filming while in the store. Mark says it feels like he's moving at a snails pace, and to be honest it's a strange feeling to film in a big store like that with people looking at us like we are crazy. I will make sure we slow down from now on, and thanks for watching!
@@PolishYourKitchen oh I wasn’t complaining. I understand you’d feel a bit self conscious filming in a supermarket. We just loved it so much that we wanted to linger over the food!😄 I guess we should have paused the video! I’m telling my family and friends who’ve been with us to Poland to watch your channel. One of the places we’d always end up going was one of the big supermarkets in Toruń, (or Kraków when we visited - about 7 times I think) and any city. Thank you so much for bringing some Poland into our lives here in Wales during lockdown. Keep going just the way you are!
@@jacquikruzewski9295 No need to pause the video. There is an option to adjust the playback speed by clicking on the gear sign (settings) on the main video bar, then click on Playback Speed and pick your preferred choice...Done.
From canada, as someone who has polish parents, I’m glad to say that I have had the pleasure of drinking oranzada and getting to try candies like mamba and other sweets
HI there Guys!! Absolutely loved this Grocery Store Video!! Reminded me of the Albertson's that was near our house in Baton Rouge many years ago! You can go back to that store for another video anytime for me!! Tommy perked up when you hit that Candy aisle and got excited to see the candies he knows like the Skittles!! Great show today! Thank you so much once again. I would purely LOVE to visit your town in the future!! 😊😎😊😍👍👍👍❤❤❤ (Rob Allen in Thailand)
That store was very reminiscent of the Real Canadian Super Store on Oxford Street East in London, Ontario. Just as big, and just as diversified. And yes, we have coin operated shopping baskets here. Sometimes the slot is for quarters, sometimes for loonies (.25 or $1) depending on the area and degree of shopper theft (too much to carry? no car? can't afford a cab? no problem, just take the cart home and abandon it somewhere along the street). It is amazing, however, just how much processed food there is everywhere in the world now. Thank you. That was fun.
Wooden spoon? It was the belt when I was a kid. When I was about 4 years old I got lost in the supermarket, I was shopping with my mum, my baby sister and my grandparents, well grandma found me first so a slap round the legs it was, then my grandad founds us so I got a slap round the ear, and when my mum got to us, yes you guessed it, another slap round the legs. I can safely say I never ever did it again. I have never once dared to back chat my mum!!!!!
Omg i feel like im there again.. things are so cheap in poland compared to Mauritius. I loved going to Biedronka and choose my beeers (huge variety). Awesome video
What fun! Out of curiosity, where are most of the homeware items made? Europe, China or from all over? If my parents were still alive, they would be amazed at the changes to Poland, especially this store. They travelled while it was still under communist rule. Mark, bet it would be a fun video if Anna made a pizza for you; it's not hard and does taste better than the frozen "cardboard tasting" pizzas. When I was little, papa brought home wrapped candy that had a cow on it, also there was individual fruit filled candy too. This was in the 60s so things have changed. In the US, we have stores where we bag our groceries and Aldi and other stores also require you to put in money to release a cart. Sorry, if this post is all over the place but I have watching and typing as I see something. Take care!
Helena, the homeware products come from all over the place really. We have things in our kitchen from Poland, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, England, the US, and of course China. You can still buy the Krówki, or the cow candy you talked about. They used to be a favorite treat my Mom would bring to the States when she would visit us. Thanks for watching!
Long ago I worked with an older lady from Poland. We used to have pot luck Fridays. Once she brought a bottle of Polish vodka, mickey size. I think a serving size was about 1/8 tsp. It took years to finish the bottle. My personal belief was that they also used it for tractor fuel.
I can't overstate my gratitude for you making this video! Everywhere I go, I make a point to dive into local grocery outlets and specialty food stores. This video was so perfect and fun! Thank you for this! P. S. Are there any high-end stores in Poland which specialize in Polish delicatessen?
There are. We are trying to arrange a tour/interview with a couple of these stores as I type this. Fingers crossed we can work it out. Thanks for watching!
I love Polish ketchup, it's the best. I love the fact it actually tastes of real tomatoes. Heinz & those other brands are just a red sauce with lots of sugar, don't buy it, its nasty. Polish ketchup is brilliant!
HEY,ANNA,THAT WAS MY GRANDMOTHERS FIRST NAME. AND MY FATHERS SIDE OF THE FAMILY CAME FROM SZCZECIN FROM THE COUNTRY SIDE. I MISS HEARING THE LANGUAGE AND ANY RELATIVES I WOULD LIKE TO MEET BEFORE I DIE. I LIVE IN THE MIDWEST IN THE STATES. THANK YOU.
Wow amazing shopping Poland has really come close to the USA. In Cleveland Aldi's is the only store where you get your quarter back. Other grocery stores the cart is free.
I live in IL and we have a large Polish population. Not much at this store is foreign to me. I love Polish food. I am not of Polish descent but The women and food are great. lol
This was very interesting to watch! I was kinda hoping to see the coffee/tea aisle. Which is more preferred? We are a divided household. My hubby likes one, but not the other (except when it's cold) and I tend to prefer the other but will drink his choice also. It's one of the first trivial things I try to find out about a country.
Very fascinating!! When Aldi's came to St. Cloud MN... where I live, the whole concept of paying for a shopping cart really threw people off. But we soon adapted. Interesting to see a lot of U.S. companies, Hellmann's, Heinz, Miller Brewing, Frito Lay, Jack Daniels and Snickers bars!! Hamburger sauce must be the same as what is called fry sauce in the U.S. It is basically ketchup and mayonnaise with spices. Very popular in certain areas out west, they even have it at certain fast food places. It is very tasty!! If I send you tator tots, do you promise to make tator tot "hotdish"?? You betcha!! 😅🤣 Really enjoyed this one!! Take care!!
This is fascinating. I am of Polish ancestry but never have been to the country. Didn't really learn to cook Polish foods. other than Kielbasa, either. I've enjoyed your cooking sessions and will try some of the recipes. Just wondering what is the value usd of a zloty?
Nice to see my old stomping grounds and how it looks in 2021. I left 10 years ago. I'm sure the shitty roads still exist. YES!! it is a real problem to find a good steak in Pl.
