Polish your Bolt to Silky Smooth in 20 minutes - (Shown on CZ 455)

Using a fine sharpening stone and a polishing wheel impregnated with jeweler's rouge, I'll show you how to polish the rough factory finish to buttery-smooth in 20 minutes.
Note that you are only taking sharp microscopic rough spots off and then microscopically polishing.
Please notice that so little metal is affected that the acid etching serial number is still clearly visible on the bolt after the stonework and polishing.
The stone is ultra fine, about as much as the unglazed part of a porcelain coffee cup bottom.
The polish is a jeweler’s rouge stick that is impregnated onto a small polishing wheel.
Also note that after-work smoothness is shown without any oil applied.
For the concerned purists- be assured that there’s no sloppiness or damage done. The bolt is TIGHT, just not rough, grinding, and sticky any longer.
Yes, CZ should have done the finish work, but regardless, this 455 is an absolute joy to manipulate and shoot now. Maybe 500-1,000 rounds would have corrected the problem, but this definitely did. ;)
Please like and/or comment! ;)

I just covered my cz bolt in flitz and cycled it through a movie , it’s now smooth as butter, amazingly smooth, then sprayed the action out with brake cleaner and put a light coat of bolt grease !

For my CZ455 & 457 bolts, I buff them with a 6" buffing wheel on a grinder/buffer machine using brown polishing compound. Unlike the 455's stamped serial number on the bolt, CZ laser etches the serial number on the new 457 bolts on the bottom side and they are very gritty when new. I take down the rough edges with a green scotch pad on die grinder and finished them with the buffer. Spend 1/2 an hour on this process and your bolt will be silky smooth.

Just acquired a few guns and plan to spend some cold winter evenings deburring and polishing the actions. It’s amazing how little work it takes to make a big difference. Very satisfying to feel and hear the difference.

Works like a charm, I picked up a 1986 Brno which had very little use so the bolt wasn't worked in at all. Its now glass-smooth! Also a going over with cotton buds & autosol afterwards makes it even better.

Good job my Brother, Semper Fi! Any new firearm today needs that kind of attention up front; it is not done any more from the manufactures. I use stones, wet and dry paper of different grits, jewels files and even lapping compounds at times in areas. The Dremel tool works, but I have metal polishers up to a floor standing unit. The 455 is an easy rifle to do, and you nailed the every guys solution to do what needs be done.

I used fine emery and then polished. On my first I used the old method of using it for 25 years. Never liked the roughness when first bought it but didn't even consider the option of fixing it. I bought a new for my wife and polished it. Both about the same now.

You know, for money we have to pay fr this 'quality' rifle, you'd think CZ would have done this BEFORE it left the factory; that being said,. this video will help us to give this rifle's bolt ( indeed almost any bolt action rifle ) the finish it now needs to be able to operate smoothly. Thanks for putting this video up here on RU-vid.

Excellent video. I did a similar procedure on my Anschutz 54.30. Although the bolt was fairly highly polished from the factory, a little extra work with some autosolvol made a difference. I also use some slide glide on the bolt as well as a regular strip down and very light oiling of the firing pin.

Great advise. Did this on a new CZ .22. Instead of a stone, I barely knocked off the sharp edges using wet/dry 1500 grit sand paper, then polished with a dremel like you did. Cleaned all the polishing compound off, oiled it back up, and smooth as silk now. Thank you for posting this.

It should of been smooth from day 1, i got the 527 american .233 brand new a few months back and it was as stiff and rough as hell, you shouldn't have to put 500 rounds though a rifle for it to preform smoothly at the price you pay for it. You done a great job explaining how you polished yours and i have done the same as a result, good rifle now so happy days.

They aren't that expensive though(just 500 bucks in most stores). Adjusted for inflation, your granddad paid 3x's more back many decades ago(often 2,3 or 4 week's hard labor pay for one rifle). Anschutz quality will cost you $2,500.00 for a new Anschutz rifle to get all those added "personal hand made" touches... taking 20 min to polish your bolt to your liking isn't even remotely a big deal for a rifle owner to do.

That stone looks just like my old Buck Washita stone. For the DIYs that have never used the felt wheel and a polishing compound before, wear a mask so you aren't breathing the very fine dust that is created by that method and also, if you have guitars or nice things that you don't want covered with a fine layer of the polishing compound, either cover them or remove them from the room or just do the polishing somewhere where your nice stuff isn't around. Using Tripoli would have done the job without having to use the stone. Of course, carborundum in 400, 600 and 1000 grit would handle the job if things are really rough, and polish after that. As smooth as an action feels from the factory, a good polish job always improves the working feel of any action, although I have to admit that my 452 American was and is, pretty smooth and I haven't done anything yet to improve it.... Maybe one of these days..... ;) Also, I should mention that Dremel has a "cratex" wheel that is impregnated with a very fine polish and that wheel would do much of this work itself....

I checked out a CZ 22 Mag; Autoloader about 3 years ago. The Safety was sooo sticky that I could not move it. The owner of the Firearm store who was Big and Burley took over and he had a great deal of trouble getting it to move although he finally did. I was and still am not impressed with CZ's quality. This example doubles my doubts about CZ's quality. CZ is not exactly a budget manufacture of firearms. Kudos for this fix if one already has one or more.👍👍

I have a 455 LR that has no probs with 'clatter' like the vid, but the safety was very hard to operate. It's due to the 'strong' firing pin spring - the firing pin is blocked by the safety. Just had to round the edges of the safety lever inside the bolt, waaayy better now. I didn't need to polish the bolt of my 455, but my Sav B22 needed the bolt's guiding rail polished like in the vid, plus 'breaking the leading-edge of that rail so it wouldn't drag across the bullet-lead and scratch it. That's on a $300 rifle, 'low-end accuracy' it shoots 0.5" at 50yds with SK+ ammo. My CZ does better . . .

Or...you could just work the bolt back and forth by shooting it (or not) and it will wear itself in very nicely. They aren't even close to being rough out of the box. Love mine. 100 fun rounds at the range and it’s smooth as glass. You’re just polishing areas that don’t need it. A quality rifle will always need to wear in.

I just bought a brand new CZ527 American 22 Hornet couple days ago. I bought what i originaly thought was a quality firearm. I couldn`t be more wrong. I got it home, going thru it and cleaning it, i opened the bolt, and it was super tight. Upon noticing, it sounded like it was grinding rocks up as i moved it forward and backwards. I pulled the bolt out, and i just could NOT believe how bad the machine work was on the bolt. Its like it was roughed out on a lathe but never finished. I am just seriously pissed for what i paid for this gun to have it sent to a store to be sold. Its my own fault for not looking at it closer before i bought it. I SHOULD HAVE pulled the bolt out and inspected it closer. Had i done that, i would have noticed how bad the quality of the machine work was and i would have left it right at the gunshop and not bought it. I dont really want to send the whole gun back to CZ for this problem, but to get them to make it right, i`ll likely have to ship the whole gun back. I`ll be calling them monday to see where we go next with it. You can bet that i WILL BE paying closer attention next time i buy a CZ. A few months ago, i bought a brand new CZ457LUX in 22LR, really sweet gun. Quality was on point, so i slacked off on hard inspection when i bought the CZ527. I figured i was buying quality and didnt need to look it over for flaws i shouldn`t have had to look for. My own fault... but just a lesson to others, the CZ quality just isnt up to snuff like it use to be. We`ll see how they handle my situation. It may dictate if i ever buy another CZ product again, or not. This bolt is so bad that it looks like a metal file. Run your finger nail across the length of the bolt, sounds like a hacksaw cutting metal. Just plain sucks.

I THANK YOU very much for posting this video🙏. My Savage BSEV 93 WMR's Bolt-Action sounds similar to walking a pair of NEW corduroy pants, which is no surprise. It’s brand new. It’s sold as a target rifle-as compared with their other rimfire rifles-& the bolt sounds just like yours. I had a spinal cord injury that affects my strength and fine hand function-BUT I still shoot & am equally as accurate as my (able-bodied) friends. What does this have to do with your video? Well, I’m not strong enough to cycle that brand new Action...but I’ve heard that 'lapping the bolt' helps make cycling the action much easier. What you’ve demonstrated seems to have greatly reduced the friction of your action=less force required to cycle. Is this what 'lapping...' is? Thanks!

The stone is ultra fine… in the neighborhood of 1,000 grit or higher. The compound is jeweler’s rouge that feels like a round stick of semi-hard clay. I would imagine that you could also use mother’s polishing paste. Notice that the stone and polishing are so light that the acid factory etching is still readable. The stone is just to lightly take off the high points. The jewelers rouge is to polish it. All this to say, don’t overdo it. Less is more. ;)

@@cheesegeezer5019 that really sucks about your cost for ammo. I'm currently paying just under $30 US for 500 rounds of good quality target .22lr and that is buying local retail not bulk ordering a case of 5,000 online which is even cheaper.

That is a good way yes but what about the counter part? The action? One guy made a vid how he uses JB Bore paste on to the bolt and then cranks it back and forth for a while. That will leave the action side smooth too. It will also form it to the action by wear, not by mechanical grinding.

He left a bit o f important info out here and a little mistake. One, the Stone was a straight razor hone which is in the neighborhood of 20 to 30 JIS Grit. It is not a typical sharpening stone and hard to find. A hard white or black Arkansas stone is easier to find but expensive and is what a smith uses for fine work such as trigger honing. The co mpound is NOT Jewelers rouge. R ouge is a compound for soft precious metals and made from iron oxide. It is not for steel. Color of bar is dull reddish brown. Compound used here is White Alu. Oxide and is a fine polishing compound made for steel. Do not order rouge for your work thinking it is the proper compound. White is fine, Green Chrome is finer adn pure Green Chrome is the finest for full mirror finish. KnifeMaker/Retired after over 47+ Years in the Craft.

Can a person use sandpaper instead of the sharpening stone prior to the polishing wheel?
@TheRmeyPilot
@TheRmeyPilot Год назад
I used the stone so that it would be perfectly level. I think sandpaper, unless supported, could round things off.

Do you still have the Vespa? How many miles are they good for?

Dale Gross thanks for asking about the Vespa! Haha. Had over 10,000 miles when I sold it a year ago. I absolutely loved it but the traffic around here has gotten heavy and people just drive too crazy nowadays.

What grade/grit stone did you use?
@TheRmeyPilot
@TheRmeyPilot 11 месяцев назад
It’s ultra fine in the neighborhood of 1,000 grit. All this to say, don’t overdo. Less is more. ;)

Hello sir. Nice and usefull video. Any day now I'm expecting my new CZ 457 Varmint to arrive, which I will than glass-bed and polish the bolt. I got here my double side plated stone grading 400/1500 grit. Does 1500 sounds about right for the bolt ''sanding'' or should it be finer, like 2000, 3000 ....Thanks in advance for advise. Which grade is stone you're working with in the video ?
@TheRmeyPilot
@TheRmeyPilot 4 года назад
JureD I used jewelers rouge so would go with the finest possible first and only higher as needed. The sharpening stone is extremely smooth. Not sure how fine but it has no grit to it whatsoever. Hope that helps.

Leave it alone. It's a fine production rifle and will break in and be just as smooth, but tighter than if you try to make it better than the manufacturer. Step away from the dremel.

The 457’s are known for having very rough bolts. Especially the serial numbers. The 1500 should be good. Also check the inside of the receiver for burrs.

Looks like buffing compound. But you can use valve grinding compound to the same effect, just smire it on the bolt and work it back and forth, then rinse bolt and receiver with gasoline. No need for grinding stone.

Good tips, but you probably only needed to deburr the sharp edges.

So you only polished that one lower section of the bolt near the face- nothing along the mid section between the face/bolt handle? Interesting.
@CrazyPalidin57
@CrazyPalidin57 4 года назад
It would make a lot more sense to have just polished the back interior of the receiver where it makes contact with the bolt. That's where most of the roughness comes in.

Use nitrile gloves if you are handling carbon steel that has had the protective oil removed. Hand oil will cause rust.

Your hand oils are slightly acidic, causing rust. Gun oil isn't.
