These are the wet sanding preparation stages for polishing a cast part. I provide a workable solution for keeping engine parts out of your kitchen, and demonstrate a new technique you should use during all wet sanding stages for blending your textures after planing on each grit. Get those textures right before stepping up. Wet sanding is where it makes the most difference.
I spend some time giving the background of my experience with this method so that all of you can put its origin together. I never promised anyone I'd give you the secrets to polishing made fast or easy. I promised to give you the method that won me trophies, and I can't help it if you think it sucks. I'm not even doing this for competition. I'm doing this only to pay respect to my previous build, and to share with all of you how I made a thing that brought me an immense amount of joy over the years. A thing that won multiple categories, and 3-peted King of Bling VERY controversially because it was a stock-appearing car on 1995 GS factory un-polished alloy wheels ALL 3 TIMES. I am the only car to ever win it with factory wheels. All my work was under the hood.
These techniques work on EVERYTHING metal. Except the ones that burn or explode when you get them wet. It works on the ones that rust, too... but why on Earth would you ever do that? Don't. The only thing that changes are their hardnesses, and which compounds and wheels you'll need for polishing them. We'll talk more about that in the next episode where I'll be doing that work.
I will do very difficult automotive jobs for food, and production equipment. Enable my suffering here: / jafromobile

There are master craftsmen out there. Whenever I see someone with a common skill set like this one, it makes me curious about what else they do simply because of their attention to detail. It's like surviving boot camp before battle. A common bond. They get it. And for whatever reason, they always have something incredible under their belt that I can learn from. Something that I don't know. I've been following Keith since I got here, but those are two fantastic examples.

Jafro man...so after my (not exaggerating) 10 minute laughing fit, I called my wife into the room to show her the beginning of this video. I bought a '91 Capri a couple years back, and you have been a bad influence on me. So when she caught me with my crankshaft in the kitchen sink (yes, I have pictures. I did the entire rotating assembly plus the entire valvetrain there...), she wasn't super down with my explanation of "Jafro makes it seem like keeping this stuff clean is the most important part, so whatdoyawantfromme?". In hindsight, the many (many many many) hours spent porting and polishing on that cylinder head....I bet a lot of that could be "blamed" on you, in her eyes. I'm just now realizing why she rolls her eyes when I get so excited when I get those emails from Patreon. Hey Jafro, thanks for taking the brunt of my wife's ire! Now how do I get her to stop hating my car?

I am crazy enough to be attempting this (albeit not on a cylinder head) and can confirm this series is gold. Still on the first cut of my Alfa's cam cover using 40 grit, because the casting is really heavily textured. Getting into the corners is the hardest part, but I'm making good progress and this video comes just in time to help inspire me. It already looks leagues better than it did when I started. Also that intro was... unexpected 😄

I keep telling people that this mod is more popular than they want to believe. After 50k miles using the polished thing I built and having myriads of people asking me about it everywhere I went, "how did you do that?" was THE most popular question. I didn't invent these techniques. I just dug to find out how the old-timer's did it. I had the same question once. Since you're still in the rough cuts, My advice is to do your detail work with a finer grit than where you are currently. If you have lettering, or accent lines, stay away from it until you hit about 120. ;)

@Jafromobile 2 года назад
Your comment slipped by... sorry... Yeah, go look at the Panteras at the beginning of Step zero. People do that. But be warned. "Just the intake manifold"... Intake manifolds are usually the most difficult part to polish on any car if you're lucky enough to even have one that's aluminum. Most are made out of mystery metal. The quality of a head, block or transmission case casting is usually very pure in comparison to intake manifolds that aren't made from sheet metal.

Restricting water flow will probably ruin the pump eventually. Plumb a 3 way fitting on the pump output, add a ball valve and you can easily adjust the water flow without the risk of damage. Basically a bypass circuit.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
It might wear out a bearing or something, but this pump like an aquarium pump is a free-floating impeller between two alternating magnetic fields that cycle at the AC current frequency. There's no belt, or drive connection to the impeller to stress. I don't know when I'll ever use it again as a wet sander? ...but it lived through it this time. I don't even know when I'll ever use it as a parts washer because now I have an ultrasonic cleaner. The ol' wash plant bypass... that does sound like a good way to avoid overloading the bearings or bushings on the impeller, though.

@@Jafromobile You might want to check if the slotted screen on the intake can rotate. The retail version of the same pump has an adjustable flow rate that goes down to pretty much zero, so as long as the housing remains submerged it will never self destruct almost every time.

What are your thoughts on "wet blasting?" It's a sand blaster and pressure washer combined. It uses whatever grit you want, no dust.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
You mean vapor blasting... But a power washer? That actually sounds like something different? My take on blasting complex parts that have raised detail, precision holes like seal bosses, milled gasket surfaces or oiled journals is not to get it anywhere near any of that stuff. Everywhere angles intersect, the overspray of your impact will concentrate the abrasive, and distort the shape of that corner. I wouldn't think any differently about it than I would about vapor blasting or plain old bead blasting. Never on a cylinder head or valve cover, but always on an intake manifold, thermostat housing or transmission case.
