Let's go through the procedure of removing orange peel in 2K automotive paint. The clear I used is a scratch-resistant clear, so we will finish with 5,000 grit sandpaper to minimize buffing.
We used Melomotive detailing block kit to remove orange peel.

I Have Been Doing Paint & Body Work For Over 50 Years. I Have Never Seen A Black Paint Job Buffed Out To A 3D Finish Like This Without Using High End Wax. Very Impressive.

Hey Gunny I came up with the same conclusion with the Flex random orbital, I have the corded version and love it. But upon my first use, I was disappointed as I was getting the hazing effect, much like yourself. Moved over to my rotary, no probs just clean clear and no haze. found it was the product, not a fault just what its designed to work with. It seems some products need that heat generation to help clear the lubricants (which is what leaves that haze). Random orbitals produce very little heat so cant clear the lubricants. Moving to the correct pads and compounds designed to work with random orbitals is a must. But as we say you live and learn my friend. By the way love the corolla looks schmick!!!!

I watched the raw channel's tech talk and was amazed. I learned alot about flat blocking and paint mil thickness. Its things I wish I wouldve known when I was first learning to prep and paint

1950's the cars were polished as you were saying...I have been doing it since 1977 the biggest difference is the technology in the polishers... the cutting compounds are close to the same...wool pads are the same although it was tied to the backing plate in the 70's (no hook n loop)...I didn't see any foam pads until 1985 we had "glaze's" and swirl removers...wax technology is now improved/paint sealers were around in the 1980's and would last 2-3 months the wax 1 month....Im having fun, it is easier now by a long ways... very good video!

I just had a go with the farecla g3 compound and it was awesome 1 step compound. Cut back 2000 grit scratches and got it awesome with no swirls or hazing. Try it out

Looks bloody fantastic Gunny, the Quartz Black basecoat you used is one of the blackest out there, then you add the Quartz Crystal Clear and you can't go wrong, I've used both products but apparently the Multi-Mix Ultra Jet black is even blacker I have used it but personally I couldn't see any difference all the black panels on my IG channel is the Multi-Mix black, I hope you are doing ok mate as I think you should be in Melbourne today (Friday). I always swear by the 3M Finesse-it and Perfect-it (Ultrafina is top notch) range of compounds and the good old classic Ferecla G3. Always done me well over the years.

An old panel beater told me in the 90s to remove swirl marks you can use cornflour/corn starch as it doesnt scratch.

Gunny you gotta try the Menzerna line of compounds and polishes. You'll love the heavy cut compound 400. Check their website out.

you should try a 5 HR battery it can handle more of a load and will not over heat I use it with my blower when gardening

Great result there man. About the batteries, those are probably li-ion or li-poly, they don't leak just straight up go to exploding stage ;) Look up 'laptop battery exploding' here on yt. That's the same cells, they pack enormous amount of energy.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Ceramic Quartz Crystal Clear as opposed to a paint similar to DNA Diamond Clear over Soul Red Crystal Metallic 46V solvent base. Will the Ceramic Clear take more abuse for stone chips, sand blasting from road grime and are there any problems with refinishing the clear. Are Ceramic clears prone to sunburn peeling?

used lots of compounds and polishes the most flatting I do is to 3000 grit, then I go old school and use g3 paste there is not anything better for your first cut lots of water messy but nothing I've tried beats it, I then use menzerna 3 stage compounds for final cuts and polish and really happy with the results, I start off with a rotary, then 2nd stage go on to a da polisher, and I really do get a mirror finish, but like gunny says you need to have enough clear on to be confident to do that, I do top-end cars and they really do need finishing the way I do them I always put 3 coats of clear on if that's the finish I am aiming for, as gunny says you need to know how much clear is on before going to the extreme as a painter its no big deal if you buff through but for a detailer its a nightmare.

Hi mate with 3m polish do you struggle to remove the cutting compound do you have a special way of cleaning the residue it just leaves dots everywhere cheers jeep up the good work

Nice vid mate, you've got some of the best content on the web, keep it up! Do you think that the hardness of the clear coat had something to do with the level of material removed from multiple sanding and polishing stages? I'm really surprised that it was only 10 microns on average, I would have expected more, surely if you did that on the factory clear it would have removed more?

Hi I’m painting a set of wheels it’s not a colour change and I’ve got bare metal I’m going to spray etch primer over do I need to spray normal primer over that aswell?

It is recommended, some people skip it, but for what it's worth you probably should.

Easier to sand using a DA. Start with 1200 then 3000 then 6000. That's all you need. Then polish, 2 or 3 stage.

Depends what you're doing, if you're trying to remove orange peel with 1,500 no, if you're just removing deeper scratches, say if you already blocked it with 1,200 or something then yes. 3000 already has a soft backing so that won't need it

Yep agreed. My sandpaper range has been replaced by mirka net discs. They have the advantage of never clogging when used with dust extraction, but they do require an interface pad as the discs destroy your hook and look. Can’t see me going back with 3m with their still excellent clean sanding discs, but until they change to a net type discs I can’t see me returning. I still used their trizact and I use 3m stick it rolls exclusively.

More liquid,harder pad finishing polish and the haze would be gone. Harder clears don't like soft pads on dual action machines beacuse of the orbit. The gloss on that thing is unreal.
