You dont "need" to spend extra on an expensive polisher, like a Flex. But, you will get better results with it, and the correct products. I have polished cars completely by hand, used cheaper polishers, and moved up to Flex when I went professional. My Flex machines are more efficient, faster, and provide better results.

I have to laugh, I stopped in my local detailing supply store looking for a wool bonnet to go over my Harbor Freight polisher and got to talking to the owner. He asked if i had a detailing business and i said sort of the me and my son were kind of starting one. After hearing about my polisher he informed me pretty sternly " well thats not very professional " lol. He also informed me that he would be more then happy to sell me a Rupes polisher. I love your guy's attitude on use what u have and it makes me chuckle seeing you use a Harbor Freight sander with a polshing pad on it getting the job done.

As someone who did bodywork for 8 years and polished fresh paint, I can assure you Rotaries have their purpose, and Orbitals have their purpose, I could buff out 1000grit marks on a full hood in about 5 minutes with a rotary, then a second pass with an orbital to give the good finish, all in using both was more efficient, no orbital is able to tackle this much material without needing to blow/clean your pads several times, let alone do it in 5 minutes.

You can also ruin your ROS (random orbital sander).... A bunch of them self cool with a fan that pulls air through the holds for dust collection. I see you pulled it off the filter , but now its going to pull moisture through the foam... Also it will have reduced air flow so it might burn up or at the least it's good for the machine long term. DA polishers don't have to deal with that because it roatates and orbits based on its gear box geometry, and gets cooled by the motors fans through its filtered intake. So the only way to wetsand or polish without risking your possibly expensive equipment is by using an electric DA polisher or an air DA. Not trying to be negative but I thought anyone watching this will hopefully come across my comment so they're informed about the possible issies. Bosch, Mikita, Mirka, and 3M do not recommend wet sanding or blocking the vent holes due to overheating or possible damage to the unit.
@diydetailofficial

What removed is not a filter, it’s a pad brake. No moisture gets into the machine from pad washing

I want to point out something that is very important but doesn't get mentioned enough, and that tip is: Avoid mechanical car washes! IF you value the car and it is in good shape NEVER take your car through one of these. Next time you are near one of those car washes take a good look inside it. You see those huge blue spools spinning against your delicate paint finish? I used to work for a fleet with a car wash and I saw those spools up close. Those spools use plastic threads that are designed to be hard wearing NOT to go gentle on your precious paint! Those threads are once removed from barbed wire. I've seen the results of people who took their cars through the car wash too often and the paint had permanent swirls and scratches that NOTHING could get out. KEEP YOUR CAR AWAY FROM MACHINE CAR WASHES.

The only problem is that by removing the pad so many times, the pad and its velcro separates too quickly, making it a financial pain. 😢 The velcro on the machine also needs to be treated with care while removing the pad. 😊 Most of the people use too much polish and don't clean the pad enough. 😮 Most of all, carefully clay bar after washing and BEFORE polishing. 😎 Proper washing technique will save having to polish too often.

If you plan on polishing your car multiple times I'd suggest looking into polishing, there are different thicknesses to your clear coats, different hardness, one panel could need heavy polishing where as others if you're not careful you can burn through the clear coat, should have a new pad instead of cleaning the old pad, and contrary to what he said If I were you I'd atleast look into a torq random orbital buffer spending the money is worth keeping it looking top notch. If you're not interested in learning it to its fullest just take the hit and bring it to a professional, it's better than needing to repaint

I'm getting closer and closer to just cleaning up and using the random orbital sander I have (instead of buying G9) to polish my car come spring time thanks to these beginner friendly videos. Likely only polish a car once every 1-2 years. Using your Gold Standard with wool and yellow pads, if my Dewalt ROS has 6 speeds starting at 8,000 RPM up to 12,000 RPM, what is best for paint polishing? (not sure what DA polishers run at). Would dedicated DA polisher still serve me better if I polish two cars (mine and family) every 2 years?

The sander will be fine, 10-12,000 OPM is good with a 3mm stroke.

Better make sure of the RPMs on those orbitals. Some are over 10000 and that sounds like paint damage potential.

@diydetailofficial how so.... it's all depends on how you use a tool that's what I did for years never a problem I've been teach my a professional, and I bet I saw a video that you guys did the same air compressor brow out.... and just like they would say dawn soap not good to wash out pads some BS
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial 11 месяцев назад
Dawn is fine to wash pads. No we have never shown to use compressed air. Compressed air or a pressure washer degrades the pads quickly by breaking the membranes between the cells of the foam. Agreed that many companies teach to use compressed air because it will help them sell more pads.
@mrlooneycooney8948
@mrlooneycooney8948 7 месяцев назад
Just use a bucket and set ur polisher on full speed, will swirl the water right out aswell. And no contact with the pads, they’ll stay good alot longer. Then again any professional would use an average of 5-7 pads a car and rinse them out after the job and let them airdry. Looking at this video, it swings the water all around, pretty messy when doing alot of polishing. Will mess up your working area pretty quickly. But probably great for the homeworking enthousiast who doesn’t have tons of ‘expensive’ pads around. 😉 Thing is, always take good care of them and they can last you for years. And indeed never use compressed air on foampads.
