Today I will show you how I shine up those frets real nice! I use a Dremel but you can use any rotary tool for this. I use Meguiars 105 Polishing compound for this. This took about 20 mins.
This is what I used in the video:

There are few things more satisfying than polishing frets! This is a great method, thanks.

Dremel works great...but only spend 10-15 seconds on each fret...at low rpm...you don't want to heat up the frets or then you will be dealing with fret sprout.

You should do more of these quick tutorials, I didn’t realize how bad the frets were until the side by side.

Awesome video. I already have Meguiar's 105 compound, and this would speed up the process while still delivering that glass-like finish.

Great short video tutorial 👌 Although I already use a rotary tool for my final polish on the frets, I like the blue tape on the fret guard idea! Very helpful 👌

Heck YES! Thanks for this vid! I started doing this to my guitars long ago, but have been doing this for friends and fam as a gift/service a couple years ago. It's alot of fun to give guitars a simple "Tune up" (Overall Overhaul- New strings, cleaned an polished fretboard, and dremel cleaned frets...along with tightened tuners, properly adjusted pickups, Proper neck adjustments, a look at the wiring, pots, input, and overall cleaning with attention to detail. YOU are an inspiration! Keep up the good work!

It’s super fun thoroughly cleaning a guitar like that! Very satisfying once it’s done!

Thanks for the tip! I've had the chance of buying a cheap rotary tool off Lidl's in-house brand (imagine if Walmart was German and also made tools you, American folks, can buy from Amazon, by searching Parkside) and I've recalled you mentioning this vid. I'll still buy a fret guard just in case, but this seems a lot more efficient and promising than taping the fretboard and polish it all by hand! I will use the included malleable extention rod, though, as holding the tool still like that may certainly get uncomfortable after a while.

What's the bit that you're using with the dremel?

*That is a really good way to actually polish off the guitar frets. 🎵🎥🎶🎙 I just use a sanding block very gently going across them and it worked on the Ibanez I’m currently working on. I’m hoping to finish it up this weekend but at the same time I kind of hold off because I’m looking to replace the bridge with a Hardtail. Have a great weekend!*
@GuitarGuts

What grit sanding block do you use? If the frets are real bad, a light sanding with some 1500 and 2000 could definitely help out! But I don’t recommend people try it on their favorite guitar, they should practice on something that isn’t as important to them 🤘🏼👍🏼

What can you use if you don't have a dremel?

Hey Mark! Yeah Mcguiers rocks! I use the scratch x but prefer the discontinued scratch x 2.. pretty much works on everything but be careful on nitrous cellulose.

Hey Robbie. What does it do to the nitro?
@robbiestingle7640
@robbiestingle7640 2 года назад
It will go through it quickly. It's alright if you use a very small amount and lightly polish by hand . The discontinued is less aggressive.

Nice, I didn’t know you could use that for frets. I use a Dremel and a jewelers green compound. Can you use the Mcguiers compound for stainless steel also? Or just regular nickel frets?
@GuitarGuts
@GuitarGuts 2 года назад
I don’t see why not! I’ve polished stainless car parts and it works great on them.

Great method!!!!! I’m gonna try this next time. I have been using the eraser type fret polishing kit, which works great, but your hands & arms are ready to fall by the time you’re done and it takes at least an hour to do correctly. I wonder how the finish is compared to that. Anyone here do both methods and have any insight???
@michaelzschoche2746

I used to do that by hand and it made my hands so sore. I will pull out my trusty dremel next time. How often do you change the polishing pad while to do your frets? Like 1 per guitar neck or change it every 5 frets or what?

I live in the middle of no where, and can't get exact guitar supplies, even on Amazon (seriously, they don't deliver out this far). I Do have a Dremel clone, but cant get the juice you mention. Are there household items, brand cleaning products that could suufice? I'm only working on an old Yam 012, so if it goes wrong, no biggie. But its been in storage and the frets are properly rusted.

Does that compound wear away the frets prematurely at all? I use the Frine stuff by Music Nomad and like it but it takes forever and doesn't last long, I'd much prefer using my Dremel too

Would the polish technique work with steel wool if I didn’t have a dremel?

sounds too harsh to me, the wheel on that dremel is pretty soft
@GuitarGuts
@GuitarGuts 2 года назад
I have used 000 and 0000 steel wool on my frets many times to clean them, 0000 is pretty nice! But it won’t make them as shiny as actual polish.
