If you haven't already worked this out, or been told several times in the comments, you're supposed to wrap the string a full 360 degrees around the pulley, then it never slips during operation. This also applies to using a bow.
An old school trick is to run the finished pivot across the third finger nail to detect any roughness-or smoothness if it's done correctly. Thanks for a great video.

Great video Richard, as always I found very useful information on your RU-vid. Let's say you have a balance with a worn pivot on one of the ends. The pivot has been "coned" but is straight. Is it possible to burnish a balance to get its pivot more rounded at its tip instead of this coned and "sharp end"? Thank you.
@@JDRichard Aha, if I understand correctly, if it's enough material on the pivot I can try to "round" it off? It will get a bit shorter but that's maybe fine then I guess (of course can't be to short). Thank you for the answer :).
@@Watcheyes You can’t really remove material from the very top of a pivot or the end-shake will be off and the palate fork / impulse jewel action will be offset.
Hello very nice video and good work!! I have a question. When it is need to polish pivots? This is a new staff on the balance or an old that it has a problem ?Thank you .
Usually polish the outer diameter of the pivot when I have made a balance staff and need to fit it. Or when I purchase a new balance staff and the jewel is too small due to a replacement during repair and I need to reduce the diameter. Or if the staff new or old is a little too long and I need to take off 0.01mm
Great video, but I think you have a wrong tool. As you describe it, it's aright handed tool, What I've been learned at school is that the tool is parallelogram shaped. Only the bottom has to touch the pivot. Top part has to point away from the shaft so you can really do the entire pivot. I'm left handed too and had to get a left handed one.
Hello. Curious why the balance staff pivots needed polishing, just wear or did you make the staff and finishing up? Btw, watch out for the disc with holes for reducing/polishing ends, as they break easy when inserting into the tool. If it rolls off the table forget it. Enjoying your videos. RJ
Great video! Just one question. What is the eyepiece you use for magnification? I see that you are sufficently away from the tool and you also can change the magnification. Where can I get this optics giszmo from?
