So what is this "Jacot tool" and do you really need one? I answer these questions and give a detailed demonstration on how to use it. I am not a professional watchmaker but rather a hobbyist just sharing my knowledge. I hope you find this video of some value and if you like it, please subscribe, like and leave a comment.

This is one of those more advanced skills that I'd like to add to my repertoire, to bring older movements more fully back to life. Thanks for a really good demo!

Thank you for a detailed discussion of the steps in setting up the work. I like the idea of using paper to catch the part if it comes off.

Perhaps I missed it, but don’t forget to put a drop of oil on the burnisher. Nice video, thank you.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I bought mine on ebay. They can also be bought at the usual online horological suppliers as Otto Frei, Cas-ker and Esslinger. Cheers!

How does one prevent damage to the "web" of the wheel each time the bow direction is reversed? Is the driving pin a softer material?

Hi What is the max arbor length which you can use in this tool?

Would this work with a Miyota quartz movement?
@gwsjr1
@gwsjr1 Год назад
I noticed when you flipped the wheel to do the short side of the staff that you wore a step onto the end of the first pivot. Do you not use lube in that area when polishing? Also, when should the pivot ends be rounded on the staffs of the wheels or balance?
@gmorse7531
@gmorse7531 10 месяцев назад
The step at the pivot root is the result of lack of control of the burnisher, allowing it to wander away from the shoulder. It isn't directly related to lubrication or lack of it.
@rakhlin

I noticed color change on the pivots. Do you think they overheated? Are they made from hardened steel or mild? Because if hardened, the colors indicates change in the hardness and they may wear out quicker
@gmorse7531
@gmorse7531 10 месяцев назад
Those colours do suggest that the pivot has been heated, which should never happen with a Jacot tool; perhaps here due to lack of essential lubrication? Pivots are rarely left dead hard because they would be too brittle, but in most cases they're hardened and tempered to blue, which is what the result here appears to be.

The thing is that while this is a bow-driven JACOT tool, there are quite a number of similar tools which are a tad different from the one shown. These tools I mention have yet to be discussed as have you with This tool.

Is it possible to drill a hole to replace the pivot with that tool?
@gmorse7531
@gmorse7531 10 месяцев назад
No, it isn't designed to do that.

Where can one get the burnishing steel that you are using?
@grumpyswatchrestorations
@grumpyswatchrestorations Год назад
Hello Devon. Burnishers can be purchased on Ebay if you want to go the used route. They have new ones as well, or you can get them from online watchmaking suppliers such as Kasker's, Otto Frei (I think) or Cousins over in the UK. Cheers!

You seem to use the terms 'polishing' and 'burnishing' interchangeably, but they're very different processes. The Jacot tool is intended for the latter, not the former. If you want to find some documentation on the Jacot tool, (and a great deal else besides), read 'Watchmaking' by George Daniels.

Only critique can push you forward, but can be valuable only with pointing on whats wrong. Should you be more specific? I am not a watchmaker, but can be nice to know your thoughts. Me personaly will make rounded ends first before final touch at least. Thanks Peter
