The government did know something was going to happen. I worked for an American-owned language school in Japan at the time. We received a two-page memo from the American Embassy in Tokyo strongly warning that a huge terrorist attack was imminent and that people should avoid bars and restaurant frequented by US citizens. The day after the attack the memo was removed from the notice board. When I asked about it I was told it didn't exist.

These days Bill Maher acts as though college students clamping down on politically incorrect language/ideas is something new, or that it is worse now than it's ever been, yet here he is 16 years ago saying things that he could easily have said last week.
