Speaker: Enrique Peñalosa
Chair: Ricky Burdett
This event was recorded on 11 January 2011 in U8 Tower 1
Enrique Peñalosa, former Mayor of Bogotá and one of the world's most challenging urban thinkers, describes the urgent need for governments to create socially inclusive and well-designed transport systems, public spaces and cities. Addressing mobility, public space, equity, quality of life and social inclusion, Peñalosa will propose that inequality and exclusion are the main causes of the problems that affect cities in developing countries, particularly issues relating to mobility and sustainability. Enrique Peñalosa was mayor of Bogotá, 1998-2001, and now acts as a consultant on urban vision. His advisory work concentrates on sustainability, mobility, equity, public space and quality of life.

Must watch for our politicians: go to 0:27:49 for car-free days for our cities, and why!

This man is a liar. He destroyed Bogotá, he destroyed the first metro line back in 1998, he replaced it with an inefficient BRT system that everytime is getting worse and worse. Now, he's trying to expand his BRT system, TransMilenio, on the most emblematic way in Bogotá, Carrera Séptima; thanks to him, the national park, a world heritage, will get affected in order to give space to build TransMilenio's dedicated lanes. Also, he's planning to destroy the Thomas van der Hammen Natural Reserve filling it with concrete in order to make some houses despite the environmental damage that this would cause. Oh, and finally, he's going to "replace" the oldest TransMilenio buses, but he's going to replace them with more diesel buses, condemning the city to breath the same polluted air. He's not a visionary, he's a fake!

sounds like sustainable development, or agenda 21. not everyone wants to live car free or in the city but are forced by economics and who controls economics? mega corporations and government. if they wanted to make things fair they would allow more businesses and companies by americans (remove to many rules) and allow private individuals to decide how they want to live not some so called experts who have visions that do not coincide with mosts peoples pursuit of happiness or property rights.
