In this video I cover how to model characters without a base sculpt. This is perfect for those who dont have a powerful computer but still want to create amazing characters. It may be old school, but it works just as well!

I tried every method of face modeling. Box, sculpting, and poly modelling and I can say without a doubt poly modelling gave me the most consistent results. Far easier to get the topology out of the way early than try to get perfect topology of a human face starting with a cube.
@Dikko
@Dikko 2 года назад
I agree. I feel that once you begin to get a good understanding of mesh flow, it's still faster than sculpting imo. Well faster to get something functionally useful I think.
@Wandering_Watcher

I do find poly modelling to be quite therapeutic. But in defence of sculpting, you'd usually start with a base mesh. Then pair that with the multi-res modifier and you'll be set (I believe you can even bake normals directly to your lower subdiv!) A further advantage is that you'd be able to share shape keys between your head models (e.g so you can make heads morph into each). All being said tho thanks to Dikko for teaching us his godly topology. EDIT: he said this in the vid shouldn't have jumped straight in the comments :' |
@SrValeriolete

If you sculpt you will basically have to poly model anyway in the retopology
@Hugh.Manatee

I love the methodology. It is so straight forward and simple compared to other modeling videos. I love the way you control the process as you work as opposed to modeling first and clean up later. As a newbie this is so helpful because it can be really confusing try to fix the mesh later and your process eliminates the need to keep backtracking. Thanks you for this.

Calling the eye loop(s) “the Incredibles Loop” is smart. For expressive characters, thinking of the space around the face as a mask helps artists convey emotions better. I thought of this as soon as I saw the loops image!

This is almost identical to the approach we would use with “patch” modeling back in the day. It was tedious but we worked with what we had at the time. This is a really good explanation of where your edge loops belong and “why” they belong there.

I've been recently getting back into 3D modelling (thanks in part to your blender vids) and I've never really gotten the hang of sculpting - especially the retopo part - so a mix of poly and box modelling is how I still do it. I do use the sculpt tools in a non destructive way to nudge and smooth over things and I'm usually happy with my results. It might help that I draw all my character reference images so I have a pretty solid idea of what I want my character to look like from different angles and figuring out the loops etc. The advantage is clear - you tend to get much cleaner results out the box (heh) - which is especially useful for UV unwrapping and iterative animation testing. I also just like it the process of hacking away at low poly shit until it starts to resemble the character.

It's defs more efficient if you plan on jumping into rigging asap. Plus theres nothing to stop you scupting in details with a multires down the line

I had to sculpt a character for an assignment that I had to complete for the first term. After we sculpted our character, we had to retopo it and I hated every single moment of it. Now in the second term I saw your video and decided to follow along, using my own references, and I can say without a doubt that poly modelling is A LOT more enjoyable and faster than sculpting, retopoing, shrink-wrapping the retopologized model to the sculpt and then fixing the weird deformations after shrink-wrapping. I hadn’t considered the topological features of the face. The parts of the face where loops are needed line up with some interesting regions: 1️⃣ anatomic regions where facial muscles are found, which correspond to areas with motion. 2️⃣ regions for which it is tough for the brain to develop a static representation (as the loops in the front of the face are where motion occurs) 3️⃣ regions that are hard for the brain to perceive because we never see the contours of these region (as the concavity/convexity of the face doesn’t allow a perspective that shows the curves of these areas like we see the curves in a jawbone) This would explain why these ares are difficult to model and why the loops would prevent someone from overworking their model.

Hello! This video makes me excited to try face modeling, but I'm having a little trouble getting started. I hope you (or some other helpful person) is reading this and can answer my question. Starting at the modeling, you spend a while lining up the drawings of the two faces. In what way do you line them up? You're aligning the pictures so that you can get the front and side of the head to "cross", but I don't know what aligns with what. What I'm assuming you're doing is making it cross at the middle, but I think that I'm not on the right track.
