Polyend Tracker - Latency Between Audio And MIDI

Polyend Tracker has a latency between audio and MIDI output,
it's ranges from 10 to 16 milliseconds.
As the result your audio stream from the Polyend Tracker
plays 10-16ms later than your MIDI gear or MIDI data played 10-16ms
earlier than all audio from the Tracker (I'm not sure what's exactly is going on and it's relative).
Polyend Tracker runs on firmware 1.3.1b3
Issue present on firmware 1.3.0; 1.3.1b1; 1.3.1b2 as well.

I use v 1.6.0 and the latency is there for me on the first beat, then the other beats seem to be in sync, so weird. Is there gonna be a fix?

loved that low-key flex - " oh and I also tried it with my OTHER polyEnd tracker." ...2 polyEnd trackers is beast mode :)

Thanks for posting this. Bit of a relief to hear they'll update it. I am sending midi from bitwig studio to my octa track , midi thru from octa into digitone, digitone midi thru out to tracker and tracker midi out to Moog subphatty (whose audio is going into the trackers line in). All the tracker audio coming back into bitwig thru digitone audio in has about 26ms latency 😭

That interesting but seems like they simply can’t fix that latency on tracker at least there’s no fix since I’ve posted that video. I’m start thinking of selling…

@@Braek-xyz Same here, I’m in love with the Polyend Tracker, they’ve already implemented some sort of delay but it didn’t work for me, the only workaround that I’ve found it’s manually punch in delay for each midi note what’s obviously annoying, really hope they’ll add a global midi delay function… you know, I’m gonna try it again this weekend maybe some magic will happen.

@@natura808 Let me know how you go this weekend with the fix. I have tried hooking it up a few other ways but nothing seems to work. There also seems to be a lag in the internal audio sometimes. I am curious to know how line in interacts with the tracker (As far as I have checked if I sync the tracker manually by pressing play on time with my other hardware synths there is no lag on the line in audio which could possibly mean that the audio is not buffered).

@@Braek-xyz I’ve just checked I/O buffer settings in Logic Pro and it says that with the I/O buffer size equal 512 Samples the resulting latency is 26.6 milliseconds for a Roundtrip (means both time to convert your analog synth to digital and then back to analog so you can hear playback but 26.6 ms later if it’s in a real time, ) and 14.3 milliseconds latency for an Output (means digital audio playback - only digital to analog conversion). I think in your case there’s no MIDI issue but resulting latency after your synth audio travels through the Tracker audio buffer or converters and dsp I can’t be sure before I see schematics. And in my case, I assume, I only have about a half of your latency because I’m simply playing back digital audio from the Tracker that delayed relative to MIDI data by around 10-14ms. MIDI interface has a latency too but it’s usually around 3ms depending on how much info is transferred because MIDI is the serial protocol (means numbers transferred one after another opposite to parallel protocol) as I remember.

This was a similar issue with all the Roland boutique synths when using the audio over USB when it was MIDI clocked from your DAW. It was a varying latency between about 12 and 18 milliseconds. It was different every time you start/stop the DAW. This made them unusable with any other VSTi or plugins in live context. You could of course record the audio and edit ~15 ms from the beginning of the file but that sucks. I had a bunch of people tell me "what are you talking about - mine doesn't do that". They definitely did. I had all of the boutiques at one point or another and they all did it. Or "why don't you use MIDI clock delay or track delay?" That only gets you in the ballpark. As little as 3 milliseconds is noticeable to the human ear/brain and if that amount varies over time - it's worse. No machine is perfect and they all have caveats where MIDI sync/clock is concerned. I eventually paid up for an ER-M Multiclock. Quite expensive but easily worth the money if you want rock-solid, adjustable sync across several devices connected to a DAW

In my case it’s completely DAWless live setup, and everything is fine up until you start clocking at her MIDI gear from Polyend Tracker. Thanks for your comment, good to know I’m not alone who can hear 5-10 ms latency.

Just to be 100% sure, please check if the sample in the Tracker doesn’t have a 12ms gap. It did happen to me once ;)

Trust me, I did check, in the video sample is cropped for that matter, and that latency is a bit different each time I restart the Tracker, it’s vary from 11 to 15 milliseconds.

Could you sync everything to an external clock instead, would that solve the sync? (My tracker arrives on Friday and I was planning to use it as a sequencer)

If you’ll find any way around it let me know please but I didn’t find any solution except delaying midi info in relation to the tracker sample playback engine which is annoying so I’m using Polyend Tracker as stand alone groove box/sampler and it still worth it. The problem is the latency between audio and midi coming out from the tracker - audio is delayed relative to MIDI (my speculation based on the fact that audio takes waaaaay more processing power compared to humble MIDI protocol) that means audio is always will be delayed anyway, obvious solution for me it’s simply add same delay to the MIDI protocol on the firmware level maybe with some option to turn it on and off and adjust the MIDI delay. Anyway, let me know if you’ll figure out some elegant way out please.

@@natura808 Aah I see, you actually explained it in the video, I’m sorry for not thinking 😊 Yes, I’ll experiment and let you know if I find anything helpful. I’m planning to hook it up to a Digitone and some Waldorf synths, even if I could use it as a sequencer only I’d still want to take advantage of the sampler inside. Fingers crossed that Polyend have some fixes coming.

this is a know bug, opened in december last year. github.com/polyend/TrackerIssues/issues/570 they are looking to fix it in firmware 1.4... until they do, yeah its really annoying :(

@@natura808 I definitely concur, for a product that costs $920 ($800 plus taxes in Canada) this is a big deal, but unlike some other music companies that have abandoned their products 5 months after they hit the market (cough Korg cough cough) Polyend does continually update & fix issues.

Yup! I don’t understand why they released unfinished product with essential features not working properly in the first place and now we customers have to pay them as you said “pretty penny” to work as a beta testers. Can you answer why - Polyend management?

@@ghostly606I've repeated the same experiment with the same result on Firmware: 1.3.0 and higher up to the latest: 1.3.1b3 beta. In that video "Tracker" runs the latest (on Feb 20 2021) firmware. I would keep it even if they will drop support tomorrow, they box is a lot of fun! Reverberation algorithm alone...

@@sawtooth808 The reverb is really good, delay sounds like regular delay nothing special about it. Don’t forget bitcrusher, limiter and EQ - really useful.
