I think America is the #1 to learn a foreign language it is the country with such a high ethnic diversity
@GlumWretch
@GlumWretch 8 лет назад
+エイスラ Actually, the countries of Europe are more likely to be the first to learn a foreign language. I don't know about West European countries, but in the East European countries we learn two foreign languages, English and French/ German/ Italian/ Spanish/ Russian/ another one. I won't mention that the ones who stay not away from a border, probably will know some of the neighbour country's language too. The most of Americans I've met know no other language than English. And a lot of them, don't even write grammatically correct the English language although they are native.

+Joe B Horrible idea. Like +EpicJonah said, not only is there a problem with students basically wasting time (Which also means a waste in resources and teachers time/efforts), but not everyone wants to learn Chinese/Spanish. Language learning should be inspired by students, but with the current way learning languages in class works, it would not be effective at all.

Moses is a language ANIMAL!!! "Speak Tamil? No? Ok lets bust out some Hindi then!" Amazing! I've discovered your videos during my journey towards fluency in Finnish and you've given me so much encouragement. The combination of it's (perhaps famous) difficulty and the fact that there aren't many British guys who speak this language meant I thought I was onto a bit of a lost cause. Thank you mate!

The only reason that is, is because I've been learning Chinese much longer than Benny has. I'm sure if he puts more time into it, he will get better. He did great for the amount of time he studied the language nonetheless.

I love how positive the mall folks' reactions are. What people should take away from that is not that you and Moses are brilliant speakers, because you're not. No, the takeaway is quite the opposite; you had thick accents and limited vocabularies, and _they still appreciated that you were trying to learn their language_. That hurdle of "I'm not good enough yet" exists only in your mind.

It's rude because it assumes that a person is from another place. But places like the US, many ethnic minorities are from nowhere else other than America. They are American.

EJ Ravago I think in some cases however, when he asked the initial "icebreaker" he was able to hear an accent.. a non American Accent which probably aided in his curiosity to know where they may be from. In most cases, you can tell when English is a persons second language.

Oh yeah, I'm not denying that there are distinguishable accents. What I am suggesting, though, is that it is more polite to ask what their ethnic heritage is rather than what their origin is. That's all. On a side note, even if English is a second language, it does not necessitate one's origin. There are many second and third gen latino Americans who have English as their SECOND language...they are no less American than the next guy.

I'm American and people ask me where I'm from all the time. You can say that you are from Texas or something like that. He's probably asking because he wants to make sure that they actually speak another language before he justs starts speaking another language to someone. It might be a little more rude or "racist" then asking up front where someone is from.

I love this so much. I originally started practicing Spanish two years ago in my 30's after seeing one of Benny's videos it gave me confidence. I can now speak Spanish at a pretty high level, and now can speak decently in Chinese, and a little bit in Arabic. All this started from guys like Benny and forgive me I hadnt seen the other guy before but he is super impressive and now has inspired me to go find random people to talk to at a mall....lol

Note that Moses does this all the time, and for the afternoon that I did it with him, people do NOT freak out. It's a casual question, asked genuinely and nothing to be afraid of. Everyone was very very happy that we tried. The only less than ideal response was when someone was genuinely busy working, but this had nothing to do with offending them. In my experience Americans never shut up about their heritage, so even if they aren't immigrants they'll proudly offer you their family tree. :)

As a guy who has a similar story...left the USA in 2005 and learned a language with my own methods, and continuing to add languages, this is really inspirational! I speak spanish but soon french and Portuguese. A few other languages i know basic but not to a level worth mentioning. Keep up the good work! Both of you

I cannot describe how inspiring this is. I'm also an Electric Engineer who got involved in with translations (in my case, Patent translations) by accident. Your videos got me into the idea of not leaving the translation business anytime soon. Now I wanna learn Spanish, and keep learning other languages from there. Cheers from Brazil

I love seeing the smiles on their faces. For me, it resembles a wonderful sign of respect that they have for these foreigners (the black and white guys) to speak their language
