The tragedy is many people like myself fail polygraph tests constantly all while telling nothing but the truth. How this junky pseudo pop science is allowed to determine the career paths of candidates applying for jobs is beyond me. My polygraph examiner told me after the test that i was basically a hard core drug user. Even after disclosing i smoked pot once one time only 20 years ago. I never got the job and am blacklisted from reapplying. I spent many years getting degrees and many more putting myself in the best possible position to land the job i deserve and then some asshole with an electronic tarot card reader decides my fate. I am unemployed and in massive student loan debt due to law enforcement agencies thinking i lie and won't employ me. A fucking joke is an understatement.

There are many people who have been through what you are going through. Hang in there. Lol. A polygraph is a joke. I don't know how a polygraph examiner lives with themselves knowing their whole life is a complete joke. What a sad, miserable life. A polygraph is just an excuse not to hire someone for another reason. It's a cop out. Like a psychological evaluation. If they want to hire you they wouldn't waste your time. Take your power back and work for an organization that respects you.

You may be right. It should have made sense the very first time i took one of these tests where the examiner told me he detected deceit where one of the questions asked concerned adultery. Funny how one could come to such a conclusion when at that time in my life i was not married nor had i ever been. Incredibly to save face he then reworded the question (after the test was over) after i politely told him this. "Oh.. well... then what about cheating? ever just cheat on a girlfriend?" He asked. So after the test you get to just change a question when i called you out on your own bullshit? Adultery is rather specific don't ya think. I would have simply laughed and gotten some humor from it all if it were not for the fact it is severely affecting my reputation and job prospects. I think he had me mixed up with another applicant whom he thought was married but realized his fuck up when he saw i had never been married. What gets me is how he just reworded to save face AFTER THE TEST. These guys have no integrity.

One thing that I hate that most videos or sites on polygraphs don't address is that they use truthful common questions to develop a baseline on, and there's no nervousness associated with that. Once they start the test and they're firing question at you, you become nervous. You tend to sweat, tense up, and behave differently than when you're more or less just confirming already known facts.
@007DaveJ
@007DaveJ 9 лет назад
Dominic Deacon All question are reviewed with the Examinee & the examinee answers all questions before they are attached to the instrument. Therefore, no surprises, no trickery. If you have been on a polygraph, you would know that there are some questions which are are somewhat ambiguous and you will either not be 100% sure of your answers or you will lie outright to avoid exposure or embarrassment . The examinee knows exactly what's coming during the actual test phase.....Nervousness is part of the natural state during a polygraph & will affect the physiological parameters equally. An attempt by a person to purposely deceive on a relevant question causes a significantly greater reaction to any other questions on the test. This is what a Polygraph Examiner is looking for.
@davejohnston5759
@davejohnston5759 9 лет назад
***** Polygraph instruments granted, don't measure deception. However a physiological response to the greater fear of detection cannot be denied. Any Polygraph Examiner who gives greater credence to any relevant question between charts is looking for trouble and I agree that you would become sensitized. I don't disagree that there are institutions which are using the polygraph solely as an interrogation tool as opposed to it's intended use as a tool to assist in investigations. I personally believe that the pre-employment polygraph testing question format is too broad in scope to hold any water as an accurate technique.

I am so angered when I here this horse crap. These gentlemen sound so good with the snake oil sales pitch. Here after 20 years of silence is the true story!!!I was the primary suspect in a federal, felony arson investigation. At my insistance, so as to prove my innocence, I took two polygraph tests from a highly accredited company. I failed both! Since the arson was highly publicised, I lived with the stress, anxiety, sleepless nights and false guilt in a secret world. Fortunately, the ATF investigators on the case were diligent and caught the real arsonist who confessed to the crime. I wonder if others have been as fortunate? On the other side I wonder how many guilty criminals have passed polygraph tests? These men should ask themselves, how many lives and reputations have they destroyed through their work? Poligraphy is merely a parlor game and should be seen as such.

+Samanna 7 Samanna, thank you for your comment. The one thing of import here is that the individuals who are interviewed in this RU-vid most likely read this blog, yet you do not see them responding to me. Why? Because they know we are right. My main purpose here is not to put balm on long past wounds I experienced at the hands of the "snake oil polygraph sales men" but to let others know how to protect themselves. I had money and lawyers, an uncle in the F.B.I., no criminal record and a government security clearance, yet inaccurate polygraphs could have landed me in trouble. What is the average person to do (realize many good law enforcement applicants have been passed over thru required, inaccurate polygraph tests too). And lastly, Who can pass polygraph; pathological con men. The only thing I can advise is never, never take a polygraph unless you are playing a parlor game with friends. Thanks again for your thoughts Samanna 7

These guys are very confident about their craft, and in fairness there is some substance to what they are saying. The problem is, A) sociopathic people are VERY good at reacting just fine when they are lying. B) If you have someone who is innocent, but very mentally ill, extremely insecure (or is extremely stressed out by even the suggestion they have done something wrong) then they are very likely to give a false positive with these tests. Honestly, this video makes it look very great, but the more you know about polygraphs, the more sense it makes that in many states these tests are not admissible in a court of law.

So true. I heard one time on another show how person passed a lie detector and did the crime , and lied about it on the test , then told how he commited it. So you can't always go by how you skin or will react. Some people doesn't care if they are caught not telling the true. It is what ever the polygraph s told to test them on. The guy doesn't want to lose his job so he will tell what he what to hear. I have seen it a lot times and felt sorry for the who is trying keep his family together and this guy will destroy it will with a few questions saying it it below this or above that. The family member wants to put the blame so they will run over and attack them. Steve get a kicks out of it.

"Deception indicated" could be as simple as them asking a question that frightens you because what if it shows you as deceiving, when in fact the subject matter of the question got your heart racing at the thought of failing the test. I mean sure they ask you to try and stay calm, but try and ask any person, who say for example is being polygraphed for a murder case(I know not admissible in court, but still...), to stay calm.
@MooTaters
@MooTaters 10 лет назад
I guess it depends on the situation. I had seen a case where a man did it specifically for couples who suspect cheating or something of the sort. Except his reason for doing it was basically you shouldn't be with someone who doesn't even trust you enough to believe you. And in that case, I think he may have even done it in a way that didn't remove any false positives.
@nezpercenathan
@nezpercenathan 10 лет назад
I personally, first hand, know of a case when two polygraph operators agreed that at least two of 45 employees had been stealing money from a company. I was in management with that company. In actual fact, we discovered, after the two employees had been fired, BTW, that there WAS NO MONEY MISSING! It was an accounting error at the home office. The polygraphers had been told money was missing, so there was no possibility that they were going to say everyone was innocent. Everyone was innocent.

The police were interviewing everyone. Anyways I was called and asked to go to the station for questioning. I didn't thunk anything about it because i didn't steal it and had nothing to hide. So the officers start questioning me and said I was the one who snatched the laptop. I was told the laptop was stolen when I took my lunch. I got pissed off and they had the audacity to say if I didn't steal it why was i getting upset. They said if you're innocent take a lie detector test. How do you tell the difference between the fear associated with having actual guilt exposed with that of being falsely shown to be guilty? The subject can tell the control questions from the relevant questions. I'm curious if there is research that studies the influence on the test result that may result from different assumptions about the consequences of failing the test. The somatic effects measured arise from a set of emotional and cognitive processes too complex to objectively discern.

Most polygraphers can't tell when someone is deploying a countermeasure to fool a test at any greater rate than chance. Polygraphers SAY they can tell, but studies show they really can't. "You're lying" is not the only reason to try to fool a polygraph. Simply knowing the polygraph is bogus is enough to make you an unviable test subject, which can make you more susceptible to producing a false-positive result... which provides ample reason to try to beat it. Simply being stressed about the subject matter being presented can cause a reaction to relevant questions - and no, there's no detectable difference between your reaction due to stress versus lying. Almost half (give or take) of all polygraph charts are either false positive or false negative. If you're ever asked to take a polygraph for any reason, you should consult with an attorney.

The obvious question or rather a naive question is what is a lie because if there is only one truth there's a multitude of different lies. A most interesting fact would be how far the lie can be from the truth.

Say you've told investigators that you were at home watching TV when a murder happened. You've visualized this to a great degree. The investigators will then continuously challenge your subconscious reaction by asking in-depth questions about details you might not have thought about, like what were you watching, when did you eat dinner, what did you have, when did you go to bed, etc.

I would think a simple way to to 'beat' the test would be to answer questions in your head rather than the ones they're asking.

.....Nerves play a large part in the test, if for example, the examiner asks, "Have you ever cheated on your wife/girlfriend?" Well, for most, it would straight away make you nervous, as maybe you saw/know some beautiful girl you'd like to date/make love too, but you didn't do, so therefore, you lie in the fact you wouldn't do that , you don't have the urge to do so, when in fact you did have that urge too. This can cause the needles to flicker.

If the ask you questions where you answer with the truth, and compare it with answers that may be lies, you can ALWAYS lie since the beginning that way they won't see the difference in your brain reaction

i think this is utter bull... what if the accused is so nervous about being accused a "crime" that when asked the question his brain waves get all jumpy even though he was not at fault? and i imagine being subjected to a "lie detector" test already makes you jumpy to begin with.
