When doing polynomial division, it's quicker (and easier) to use an area model/polydoku. Once you go beyond numerical division, I think it also makes more sense (from a conceptual standpoint).

Love your math tutoring, John. I'd like to point out that if you want to go anywhere near a lathe or a machine tool or a robotic project or electricity they won't even look at you at the Institute of Technology without A+ in Math 12 and an A+ in Physics 12. For "passing" math they might let you sweep the floors if you're good. I don't mean to put on undue pressure but I'm telling the truth. And as for going on to college math? Forget about it. College math is really hard calculus and there's no point even trying without pretty much straight 100%s on all your tests. Sorry... It's just the truth... You've got to do like the teacher says and make dynamite notes that demonstrate that you really, really understand the concept, like little text books written for yourself...:) And you've got to learn to factor like a beaver... A+ is not that hard to achieve but it takes a bit of work...

After an apprenticeship I ran lathes, programmed machining centers, robots and many cnc lathes all with a rudimentary high school math education. Ended my career as an engineer at Ford.

Shouldn’t the x-5 read as (x-5)?

I guarantee you will never see a problem anywhere near this difficult on the GED test.

Wow. I love looking at your math problems. I think this video is about 22 minutes too long. In my head I see (x - 5)/(2x - 1) (x - 1). And since there is no equal sign I don't believe there is an actual answer any further than that. I may be dead ass wrong though
@Astrobrant2
@Astrobrant2 6 месяцев назад
Well, first of all, it would be (2x-1)(x-1)/(x-5). I did that and played with it, discovering that all I could do was make it more complicated. So I realized that even though I must have known how to do this problem in HS, I totally forgot how. It does not involve factoring or using a fractional form. As shown, it's done using an algorithm that mirrors the basic numerical algorithm for long division. It turned out to be simpler than I thought, and it still seems odd to me that we get the right answer without ever having to divide that 5 into anything. Just multiply it coming back down. I just thought about it some more, and it makes more sense. Say 25 divided into 375. Well, that's the same as (20+5) divided into 375. So the x-5 isn't so perplexing any more.

Why must you Americans write this in reverse? 2|37 really looks like 2 is to be divided by 37.

Well, since you _are_ that guy, please report for flogging at 9:00 am, tomorrow. Oh, wait, the statute of limitations (6 months) has run out on your comment. Joking aside, I'm with you. Video makers (especially teachers) should appreciate being corrected -- even if it's about pronunciation, spelling, etc. Colloquialisms and typos, though... nah, lay off. Hey, I remember several times on RU-vid when I have corrected LAWYERS who don't pronounce "statute" correctly. I mean, how is that even possible?? Yet, many supposed legal experts we see as guests in MSM don't know how to pronounce it. Or maybe it's some kind of a "thing". Well, it's a bad "thing". And if we ever encounter scientists or science teachers who pronounce nuclear as _nuke-yu-ler_ instead of _nuke-lee-er,_ we should call them out for it. Just accuse them of being a Republican.
