Polyushko Polye is a famous Russian song about cavalrymen, “Heroes of the Red Army”. They are riding upon horses along an endless plain, and promise to ward off the enemies.
Look, young maidens, hither
We are ready for battle!
Swift on their feet are our horses,
Sharp are our swords and our spears.
It became traditional to accompany the melody with the rhythm of galloping horse: pam - parapam - parapam - parapam… I followed this tradition: you will recognize the “horse” rhythm in all six variations. I also tried to depict the gradual approach of the cavalry, closer and closer, followed by its departure and eventual disappearance.
