POMEGRANATE PEEL POWDER
Growing up, my siblings and I would gather around the dinner table and watch my dad peel 5-6 pomegranates every night in the winter. He would then evenly divide the seeds and we would all cozy up with our own bowls of pom seeds and enjoy our dessert. This was when my pom obsession started and it has only escalated since.
Until now, I never considered the potential health benefits of all the pom peels I‘ve just throwing away, so I started researching them and was blown away by what I learned. Studies show pom peels actually have more nutritious benefits than the seeds! They are extremely potent in antioxidants, especially punicalagin and ellagic acid, which are anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and offer protection against chronic metabolic diseases including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity. Ingredients:
Organic pomegranate peels
Directions:
wash your pomegranates thoroughly then cut open and remove the seeds
peel away the white membranes from just underneath the outer red skin and discard these
place peels on a baking sheet and bake in your oven at the lowest temperature until dried- this took ~6 hours
transfer the peels to a high speed blender and blend until a powder forms
store in an air tight container at room temp for up to 1 month or in a freezer for 6 months
drink it as a tea- just add 1 tsp of powder to a tea infuser basket or fill-your-own tea filter bag, add hot water and allow to steep for 5 minutes then enjoy! Alternatively, you can add the powder directly to hot water, then strain through a very fine mesh strainer
Note: blending hard, dry goods will scratch your blender! My @VitamixCorporation blender is well loved & frequently used so I never mind some scratches. Just keep this in mind before blending in that beautiful, brand-new blender you got for Christmas!
