Pompeii Before and After

A short clip of my trip to Pompeii in 2010. Some of the photos I attempted to reconstruct the scene as it could have been as I see and imagine. Thanks for viewing! See more on my site at ancientvine.com
The first reconstruction was the Forum of Pompeii facing the Temple of Jupiter.
The second was a thermopolia.
Third was a roman domus
Fourth a bakery
And Lastly, the Temple of Augustus.

Just remember that those cities had no tap water, sewage, or even toilets. They may look good in artistic renderings, but I would rather choose a modern city. I mean, I really really do need tap water.

An active volcano is defined by one having erupted within the last 10,000 years. As of August 24th of this year (2021) It will have only been 1,942 years since the destruction of Pompeii. Vesuvius has erupted every 100-200 years, since, most recently 1944. It's still active.

We may have an approximate idea about ancient life in the world of antiquity by just looking at the surviving structures. Unfortunately no contemporaneous technique can provide us and convey to us their inner feelings, their vision of the society they were born in and lived, how deep or superficial their religious creeds were which ultimately influenced in their habits and vision of the world. As if by magic they would awaken in our present society they would think that they had landed in another world and finding it weird, scary and alien. We all belong in the small world we are born, in the short amount of time we are allowed to move around in it. Modern gadgetries don't make us certainly happier and more contented or secure than our ancestors. The family was their great shelter and comfort and we have destroyed that haven and consequently we all feel very lonely, disengaged and shut out, they never did.
@fliegeroh
@fliegeroh 5 лет назад
A large percentage were slaves. Their families were nowhere to be found, unless you consider their owner and fellow slaves a "family." Still, they managed to get along.
@rubemsa-fortes208
@rubemsa-fortes208 5 лет назад
@@fliegeroh In the roman culture, slavery wasn't a perpetual condition. Usually the master arranged that some of his slaves became free, when he died, adopting the surname of the family. Once freed, slaves could, with the gap of one generation, even apply for political life, and they did. Although, of course, life in the plantations, on the seas or as workmen could be very very hard, slaves in the cities had some privileges. Even if their bodies and lives were considered property of their masters, usually cruelty regarding slaves was considered bad taste. Many former slaves managed to be very rich. In a status based society, where prejudice was very present, the social mobility in Rome is still fascinating.
