For the young folks who never saw the show. CHIPS was the same format every week. It would start off with a horrendous car crash on the highway. Then the theme music would start pumping. After the commercial , they would go to headquarters for some comic relief with the short curly haired mechanic and Grossman. The Sarge would tell them about some criminals to keep an eye out for. They would catch the criminals in a car chase/crash. You could always tell when the crash was coming, cause the bad guys would jump in a REALLY OLD beat up car.. that was about to be destroyed. Then after the last commercial break, they would go and do what ever the LATEST FAD was in SoCal. Roller skating. Driving go carts. Hang gliding. Disco dancing. I guess square dancing was hip for a minute. So they did it. It made SoCal seem like a place where there was always something new and cool happening. And Ponch did it all.
Love it. Ponch is full of life and charisma. He is truly a down to earth guy, he doesn't have an envious bone in his body, you can see that by his attitude towards life itself. This is a man who grew up in Harlem where you have to stuggle to survive and yet he was able to make it. I consider him a great actor. I have watched most of his movies and his acting career on TV shows and there no doubt in my mind he deserved the Star which was given to him in recognition for his accomplishments. I have loved this guy from the 1st day I saw the TV show CHips. I wish there was a way I can meet and greet him personally.
I used to live in Studio City Calif, where many of those 70’s shows were filmed including Chips, which often had scenes filmed on my street. We (as neighbors) were allowed to stand aside and watch. Saw Ponch several times. He seemed like a nice guy and was very friendly to my son (a huge fan at the time) who was about 8 yrs old then. All the neighbor kids were thrilled to see their TV heroes in person.
I've got a friend who lives in LA who sees him every so often. In some garden store. He said he's a nice guy. Back in the 90s when I lived in LA. Seems pretty much everybody I knew ran into him at one time or another, but I never did.
There’s a very similar song that’s played at the beginning of either the first or second Friday the 13th. They’re all riding in dudes red pickup truck en route to Crystal Lake, and hauling ass the entire trip with excitement 😆

Good Gravy! I have to wonder how this show lasted so long.I tried to never miss an episode, but ,this episode is quite forgettable. Seems like most of the officers dont have much of a life, being they ate always almost seen together at many functions. EVEN THOUGH. I LOVE CHIPS.BUT, THIS EPISODE LOOKS LIKE A SCENE FROM URBAN COWBOY!!! Did I say ate? I meant are.Almost forgot,Ponch can dance .square, tango, disco. He can sky dive scuba dive hang glide. And he knows karate too!! But,1 thing he cant do,SING!!! Gotta love it!! Did I mention skateboarding???
Is there any dance Erik Estrada couldn't dance?! Loved him at the disco. He was better than Travolta, even though BOTH their pictures adorned my bedroom walls as a teen❤️💕❤️
The reason was... Larry (Jon) was given the main role in the TV show CHips, but as the episodes started the rating began and it was Erik (Ponch) became famous due to the following of his fans. So i think it was a bit of envy and ego on Larry's part. I don't see why that should have been an issue because they both did a great job. Larry acted his part as a straight forward officer and Erik acted his part as an ordinary down to earth officer...let's not leave out the rest of the cast members who also did their part to make the show successful.
This is what you call jumping the shark,Although chips might have had a few of those jump the shark episodes.Disco dancing is more appropriate for chips not this.
