Correct about Poncho having Mexican heritage. I also agree with you a hundred percent on how some of the great congueros didnt only come from Cuba although there are monster players. I dont think Raul Rekow is cuban. I have always been curious to know where he is from. You mentioned Giovanni Hidalgo, I think he is from Puerto Rico. Please correct me if I am wrong. Eddie Montalvo was I think from Puerto Rico. All this to say I agree with you all the way. They come from all over.
The first time I heared Poncho Sanchez play was on the Cal Tjader album entitled "HERE". In the 90s, Poncho had a latin jazz group of his own and played in Ottawa, Ontario in the spring at a place that use to be called "PENGUIN" Mr. Sanchez is without a doubt an icon to this flavourful sound and indeed a conga master. My fullest respects for Poncho and his musicians. thanks for the clip.
I'm pretty sure that Poncho was Cuban born and moved to the US in the late 50's or early 60's. He then became a musician with Mongo Santamaria's (Watermellon Man) band and became the leader of that band when Mongo died in the early 90's. I believe I read all this in the web of Descarga.
I agree about Ramon. The Banda Brothers were crucial in Poncho's early stages. Tony remains with the band. I highly recommend their CD: Banda Brothers Acting Up! Good music!
