Jayam Ravi was the surprise for me. Never expected him to be so convincing as a larger than life prince.

Nandhini, Poonguzhali and AlwarKadiyan are fictional characters in the book itself. Mani used these characters to perfection and also surprise element was jayam Ravi acting in such a majestic way. So its clear now actors are made to act if they are directed by great directors.

Perfect review … it’s a great movie the only draw back is as you mentioned the lead to each character is missing but it’s understandable because of movie length he has to do it that way. Who ever read the book can understand that but I am not sure how others can’t understand that

Loved the movie. Didn't read the books. Wouldn't say it's perfect. But never got bored or felt disengaged for 3 hours straight. Every frame was engaging 👌👌 Nandhini 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Yesterday I watched this movie. I didn't expect nothing more or nothing less. Perfect. I don't understand why people expect over build up like people around the character praising he is a volcano, he can do this and that. Or camera angle 360 view, slow motion action. Manirathnam proved nothing is needed to tell a story. It was engaging and feeling good about the movie. Waiting for 2nd part.

I have read this book more than 5 times. I have read the first edition with Maniam drawing. The beauty of the book is that kalki will transport you to the place where the event takes place. In the movie MR has done same thing , he staright away puts you in the very place things happening. I would say this is MR masterpiece without exaggerating war scenes or loud dialogues.

Movie is good. But, missing the grand scale in war sequences. Also, could have spent more time in climax to sync in the emotions for audience.

Rating 3:00 I like Tamil films from Andhra. But PS 1 not good film.[only Visual treat and last 30minutes good.] Audio not clear, dull lighting sceans, Songs not sweet,BGM and Music average,Dialogues does'nt claps only laugh,War sceens poor,Slow narration,No gripping Story. VFX/Art - Beginning scenes were horrid - we could clearly see the cardboard cutouts in the opening scene. Towards the end it got better. BGM/songs - ARR nailed the BGM. Songs blended with the movie. Chola Chola was not needed, the time could have been used for a better narrative. Who needs to see men in war gear dancing. Devaralan attam should have been trimmed. The sol song was missing. Casting - Every actor was apt for the role and made their presence felt, except Aishwarya looked old and caked with makeup in some scenes. Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Ashwin Kakkamanu (in the 2 scenes he had) were a pleasant surprise. No one could have done Nambi better than Jayaram. Karthi and Jayaram were scene stealers in PS1. After Karthi's disastrous previous outing with Maniratnam, he truly redeemed himself. Overall - Its a good movie but felt rushed. Watch the you tube summary videos before going for the movie, or you may be lost and confused. I watched Ungal Anban Hemanth's summary and it helped me follow the movie

No one can recreate kalki's magic in big screen unless they plan it like a 5 part movie series like Harry Potter movie or a webseries. I felt little disappointed at the way the story was rushed through without much explanation. But given the constraints it's the best they could've conceived. Anyways waiting for the second part to see how they handled the rest of the story.

Vanakkam! The opening fight reminded Gladiator, the scenes between Vikram and Vikram Prabhu, the sea shore fight in Sri Lanka reminded of Troy, the secne where Karthi was alone in the sea reminded of Life of Pai, the rescue scenes of Ooman Rani reminded of The Lord of the Rings. the fight sequence of Karthi at the Fort reminded of The Scirpion King. Apart from these things the characterization is well handled. The cinematography and the lighting is enjoyable. The costumes and the use of jewellery takes the audience to the time. Sure there will be orders pouring into many jewellery shops atleast in Tamilnadu. All the characters are well portrayed by the seasoned artists of our film industry. The background music and the songs are delivered well by A R Rahman. Well choreographed dances by Brindha. Lovely lines by the lyricists. Thank you Mr. Mani Ratnam- PONNIYIN SELVAN- Part-1.

Let's talk about the negatives. Completely underwhelmed with the stunt choreography. Nope! I agree with you that its not over the top, but unfortunately its neither subtle nor natural. The action scenes have a lot of rough edges. They could (should) have done much better. If you want a contrast, watch "battle of the bastards" GOT for an organic battle scene. The rest of the movie is good. True. But, for a movie like this, the action scenes are very important for the story.
