Welshbloke Walking.
Pont Dwr Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Walk
Today we visit the Trefor Canal basin in North Wales and take a walk across the Pont Dwr Pontcysyllte Canal Aqueduct. It is the Longest Canal aqueduct in the UK at 1008 ft. and the Highest canal aqueduct in the World at 126 ft.
From this unique position, we can see the glorious autumn colours and countryside of North Wales.

I know this place well. I lived in Fron when I was 6 yrs. old and remember paddling along the Dee with my sister and parents underneath the aqua duct, way back in 1957.You are sooo lucky to be living in Denbighshire Will. I wish I still was.

Well, that's quite the treat for me. I've done pretty extensive genealogical work, and so far the only Welsh family I've found were the Johnson family from Trevor in what was then Denbighshire. Mary Johnson, my 11th great grandmother, was born in Trevor about 1604, and moved with her parents to Massachusetts sometime before her father's death in 1659. Her mother, Hannah Throckmartin, was evidently English, but her father John and grandfather Edmund were Welsh.

Another great video Will. We first visited the Aqueduct a few years ago after watching a BBC programme presented by Monkman and Seagull, (who first appeared on University Challenge), when they made a series called "A Genius Guide to Britain". The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct featured in episode 2, "A Genius Guide to Wales". On another visit, we paid for a trip back and forth over the aqueduct on a canal barge but I think that this business has closed down now - longer and more pricier trips ARE available though. Now we have started to have a go at learning Welsh, I suspect we will make the 70 mile trip a little more often if only to see if we can use what we have learned in the odd cafe or two!

"Messing about in boats" lol. Not your usual refined narrative. Pretty accurate though. Bloody advert kicked in just as you did your Jeremy Clarkson line ("In the World"). Do you know where the missing railings went on the water side of the aqueduct? Great Video :)
@WillHuw
@WillHuw Год назад
Cheers Ian. No, I've no idea where the railings went, but whoever got them (1008ft) must have made a few bob!

Heya Will, I loved this walk and will try and do it this year. I like how your shots slowly move as you walk past, is that something you do while editing the footage?
@WillHuw
@WillHuw Год назад
Yes, it is! I can move the camera when I'm shooting, so I do it in post

@WillHuw
@WillHuw Год назад
Unfortunately, RU-vid demonitised the channel, and they were quite involved videos to make, so it's probably not going to happen :(

Had a night in the Telford in 03, when passing through on the Dyke. A local family told me of a lad who fell in the canal on the pont, drunk, and climbed out the wrong side. Really nice video. Makes me wanna do a 20 yr revisit this March.

It’s even more interesting when two boats meet in the middle of the tunnel leading to the Chirk aqueduct - it’s over 400 meters long (no equivalent of ‘street lighting there!). Chirk aqueduct isn’t far from Pontcysyllte aqueduct, by the way.

I would love to sing Suo Gan and sound authentic and I have tried several different ways but can't make all the snippets I've found make one cohesive set of phonetic lyrics. Can you help at all if you have the time, please? Thankyou. XXX
@WillHuw
@WillHuw Год назад
That might be a bit beyond me but if you can get a recording of it on RU-vid, click on the video settings wheel thingy and you can slow the playback down to make it easier to identify the words.
@cajsheen2594
@cajsheen2594 Год назад
@@WillHuw There are lots on RU-vid. Charlotte Church, Bryn and a young chorister lad. I can't see how they shape all the words as the camera moves round them, I am told by my Welsh friend there are two dialects, from North and South and they don't all sing the same verses so it's very confusing. X
@Orwic1
@Orwic1 Год назад
@@cajsheen2594Yes, two ‘dialects’, North and South Welsh. If you learn Welsh, there’s two versions of the Welsh course learners’ book. Not huge differences though.
