Pontiac GTO Rear Suspension "Clank" (Help!)

This has been going on for the better part of a year, can't remember exactly when it started. With windows up it's difficult to hear. I've had two different techs ride along to listen, and location is from passenger rear wheel area. Car spent 1/2 day in shop with no diagnosis. They had it up on lift, checking for loose parts, test driving with rags wedged between parts, etc. Can't find any interference with exhaust or suspension parts.
There is a "ting-ting" sound from the aluminum drive shaft on acceleration - this is normal, or at least I'm all right with it. The "clank" sound is louder and happens when rolling over sharp bumps and uneven pavement - only with right rear wheel. Smoother bumps are usually quit. Rolling over the same uneven surfaces with left side of car is completely quiet/solid.
Ideas? I've been under the car numerous times checking everything over. It all seems tight. Now I'd like some opinions from techs and mechanics who know what to look/listen for, and may have heard a similar noise before. If you have questions about the maintenance history, please ask, but first looking for initial opinions. Thanks in advance!

Mine is doing same stuff especially on launch and 1-2 shift and 2-3 shift. N haven't had E-brake on car since I got it so makes me think is part of E-brake lose or messed up catching. About to put in pedder drag x springs and drag bags so perfect time to check it all out. Thanks for video and info

This turned out to be a piece of broken off brake pad trapped between the disk and the splash shield. Easy fix once I pulled the rotor for brake job, good luck solving your issue.

You need to change your rear springs. It was making the same noise before I changed mine. The axle shaft is hitting your exhaust pipe.

It was piece of brake pad material that had detached from the pad plate, sitting on the ledge at the bottom of the rotor splash shield. I have Lovells springs, G-Force rear axle, and Magnaflow cat-back exhaust. There's no contact with the axle. Otherwise there would be some scoring in the paint.

Took the car to a local shop and put on a lift (wheels unloaded). We beat on the right rear tire with a hammer while the tech listened to different parts with a mech's stethoscope. It was coming from the break rotor/drum area. I pulled the rear rotor a few days later and laughed when I found a large piece of brake pad material that had detached from the pad plate, sitting on the ledge at the bottom of the rotor splash shield. When I changed the rear pads a few months ago, the inside pad was missing a chunk of material, which I assumed had made its way out of the system. Without removing the rotor, the pad material was hidden between the inner face of the rotor and the splash shield. Do'h!

Sounds similar to when one of my rear shocks was loose. It seemed to get louder on the harder bumps so that might be a good place to start. Is your suspension modified at all?

+Matt Thompson Thanks. It does have Koni shocks, 12mm drop springs, and stiffer rear sway bar. I've checked all of these parts and seem fine. But the shocks are so easy to swap, think I'll take them out, inspect the mounts, maybe swap sides.

+vanwiseman It might not hurt the check the torque specs on everything either. I can't personally vouch for it but I've heard that overtightened shocks can be noisy.

+Matt Thompson The noise sounds like something very loose. I checked all the bolts; they are good. Might be the shock itself or the mount up top.

I had the EXACT same sound, tore everything apart.....rock inside my lower control arm......

Thanks. You are close, but I found the source of the noise. When I changed the rear pads a few months ago, the inside pad was missing a chunk of material, which I assumed had made its way out of the system. Without removing the rotor, the pad material was hidden between the inner face of the rotor and the splash shield. No damage to the rotor, all is good now.

Hey man, don't know if you have managed to sort this out as of yet. My money is on the subframe bushings. They appear to be giving a significantly larger amount of deflection than normal. Its movement appears to be in direction link with the sound. I'd be inclined to replace them with a polyurethane item. Hope this can help. I did this in mine and it worked a treat to firm up the rear end. Not uncomfortable either! :)

+Ayrton SennaForever thanks for the input. I agree the insulator on the crossmember is definately flexing, and I will be replacing them at some point. Which brand did you use? The noise I'm hearing seems to be localized to the e-brake assembly inside the rotor/drum. I need to pull this and see what's rattling around in there.

+vanwiseman i used nolathane, and also utilized the seperate upper pad which helps bridge the gap between the frame and the floor. Works a treat. If the noise you're experiencing is coming from the brake rotor/bearing sort of area, perhaps a spring that holds the handbrake shoes have failed and are rattling. Hope this helps and would love to see another video after you've upgraded the bushings. Good luck!

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOUR PROBLEM IS! See that ring dangleing on that brake line?? If you look right below the bottom of the rotor, it looks like a ring, i was watching that. its moving freely, and causing the noise. Your welcome

Thanks. It was a piece of brake pad trapped between rotor and shield. Noise is gone.

oh i was wrong lol. glad you got it fixed though. Just bought my gto today! it vibrates in 5th and 6th gear, not sure what the problem is.

Congrats! Check the center carrier bushing on your driveshaft.

AAsearles yeah I'm going to tomorrow, that's what I found online. Hopefully that's my problem. Also might need. New 3rd gear. Doesn't like to go to 3rd when driving

my GTO make a clunk at slow speed while turning and in reverse but only every once in awhile. I have a one piece Hinson driveshaft that still has a small amount of play at front that i'll replace seal in the trans tailpiece. but the noise is still there?!?! Going to change lube in differential to some synthetic gear lube see how that goes...
