PONTOON LEAK - Finding and Repairing a Leaky Pontoon

This is a quick guide to how we go about locating a leak on a pontoon, fixing it, and testing our fix. This was a pretty obvious and LOUD leak making it easy to find, but usually you'll hear the leak whistling or blowing air even if it's a small leak. A DIY person at home could have repaired this with some JB Weld or probably even some silicone every few years because it was in a high spot above the water line and where there should be no wear and tear over time.

I used to work for an underground fuel tank company and one of my duties was running air tests on 10,000 gallon tanks after they were delivered to the site but before they were buried in the ground. Five pounds was the max psi they allowed them to be pressured up to. Large volume cylinders will rupture at relatively low pressure.

That's really cool information to learn, thank you for sharing that! I stick to around 1 to 2 lb, and I think that's plenty. Knowing how these pontoon boats are welded together (cold robotic welds usually) I don't need anything popping open when I'm just trying to get in and repair it!!

Can you do a video or post links on how to make the low pressure air chuck?

I went to a local Fluid Air location, they do a lot of commercial air hoses and can press on fittings. I just walked in, told them what I needed, and they whipped it together for me.

I have the same size drain bolts, same U shaped pontoons as well. What size was that drain plug? I completely rebuilt my pontoon decking, floor, seats, motor, etc last winter. The boat was in the water all summer and just took my plugs out this week(should of taken them out before winter lol). The one had 10 gallons of water and the other had 5 gallons. Im wondering if its leaking in the same areas that this one was. near the top of the pontoons somewhere.

They tend to leak along the inside of the toon where the 90 degree bend in the aluminum makes the flange for the crossmembers to attach to. That can crack over time, especially on the rear. I’m not 100% sure on the drain plug size, sorry! I have three plug fittings I had made that cover the majority of drain plugs and bungs for pressure checking.

I also have drain plugs in the back of my tubes just like this. But, most online research points towards most tubes are partitioned into 2 or 3 separate chambers. So potentially aren't popping the drain plugs only getting any water out of the rear chamber and not out the front ends of the tubes? Do you see this as the case typically? .... I hear water in my tubes and am about to attempt to embark on this journey

What kind of boat do you have? It really just depends on the manufacturer. These U shaped pontoons are usually one chamber, and often have foam inside. I just worked on a typical cylindrical pontoon yesterday and assumed it was chambered….turned out it had baffles, but no chambers. So air put in the rear pressurized all the way to the tip of the nose cone. I think the newer the boat the more likely it’s chambered. That’s been my experience

Would my 2005 tracker fishing barge 21 be chambered? Thanks

Are the drain bolts universal. Just bought a 24’pontoon. With the drain bolts missing. Also where could they be purchased

They’re usually one of a few sizes, and standard threads. Some may be found at a local marina, or we have used a pneumatic supply company for a lot of those fittings. You may have to get a few that are close to find the correct size.

Hey Tom's Toons. My drain plugs are plastic with a rubber seal, not fitting the best. Half inch brass plugs fit nicer. But I'm told brass shouldn't be used on aluminum. Is that true? So I re installed the plastic plugs with lots of plumbers tape. Maybe I just need new plastic drain plugs.

I’ve seen lots of brass plugs in aluminum tubes with no problem. People will also say that stainless and aluminum react which is wild to me because every boat manufacturer uses stainless hardware on aluminum!

How is water getting in if the leak is above the waterline?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Год назад
When the load dips the nose cone under just enough to take on water. A quart a year adds up over the long haul.

So where is the repair part of the video? Title says "Finding and Repairing"....clickbait title. Reported.

Just shows the basic process of how we go about it for those interested. Not trying to clickbait anyone.
