Most corrosion and damage to outdoor swimming pools occur during the winter. This is primarily due to cold water temperatures, and the impact the temperature has on the LSI corrosion index. In our opinion, LSI should be first priority, because it is the foundation of all other chemistry.
POOL WINTERIZING
With the LSI in mind, we go through the checklist of shutting down a pool and reopening in the spring. We recommend Orenda PR-10,000 phosphate remover before winterizing, followed a few days later by vacuuming and cleaning the filter. Then an enzyme purge with Orenda CV-600. After that's done, lower the water and blow out the lines as you normally would.
SPRING OPENING
Again, LSI first. Bring calcium and sodium bicarbonate to the pool when you remove the cover. Test the water and don't forget the temperature! Add bicarb and calcium (pre dissolved in a bucket) as necessary.
Shock with chlorine and follow that up with PR-10,000 phosphate remover moments later; the two work hand in hand to clear out contamination and phosphates. Wait to use Orenda SC-1000 and CV-600 until the water is above 65ºF because the water is too cold for those products to do their job effectively.
