Another video found whilst having a clear out in the loft when I used to have a VHS video camera . As usual the quality has gone down hill . Taken around Poole Parkstone and Bournemouth
Poole has lost all it's Inter City XC trains now and they are all cut back to Bournemouth but prior to that they went to Poole and the odd one Weymouth. There was a night sleeper in the late 80's went to Edinburgh via Oxford, Birmingham and Newcastle which I think started in Poole? Usually a 47 on it but occasionally a 50.
It looked like Malcom Collop the driver ,of the cross country at the beginning they way he walked and spoke . Though hard to tell , it's a bit blurry ! He died recently ! RIP ! retired but was still a steam driver on the Swanage railway for many years !
Indeed I think it was , he was a Weymouth driver back then and also features on my other poole video ,were he departs in style in a freshly painted 47 from Weymouth on a Xc service.
@@jamiesmithgoinglocoDefinitely Malcolm, you tell by the trainers too. He was never a Weymouth driver though. Fireman at Bomo Central where he later got his driver's job. I knew him from 1987 when I started at Bomo as guard, we were based at the West as guards though back then. That's Dave on the the platform with him. The shunters are John and Pete. Pete is the later one with the white hair. If I remember rightly he used to be a fireman too.
The gas tank trains were quite loud if you were next to them, iirc they had to have 2 signal sections clear both ahead and behind them. Think it was the early 2000s when they stopped running
Scenes I used to know well. Those houses were still beside the road opposite the station then then? That all looks different now. 6:48Those taped announcements were getting well worn out by then!
You wouldn't have any of the last of the S&D which remained in place to Blandford camp, seem to remember my father mentioning that is was mid eighties they lifted the last of the line up as the MoD were no longer running troop trains and it was cheaper to just hire up a coach from Bournemouth to the camp?
Trying to work out why MK3SLEP's were moving through Bournemouth, as those were used on the surviving sleeper trains and were then top banana on the network as BR used MK1 compartments for 2nd class proles (it was horrible), they never saw service on Motorail which did once upon a time run a short lived service to Brockenhurst as I remember when BR tried the west country to north Scotland Motorail's and they were horrendously bedevilled with problems including cars not locked onto the flats properly and falling off or as we suffered a couple times, our family car being dropped off at Stirling whilst we waited for it in Inverness or Fort William. Would say BR did book us into first class hotels and there was a tale of one poor bugger whose car was put on the wrong train and ended up in Penzance when it should have unloaded in Perth... he was not a happy bunny.
